More About Coach Jack

Updated (2/24/2023)
So far, I have spent three years as an Assistant Coach for a Boys Varsity Basketball Team at The Harvey School in Katonah, NY. We were runner-ups twice in our Conference tournament and made the NEPSAC playoffs for the first time in years.

Currently, I am one of the assistant basketball coaches for a middle school basketball team in South Bronx, NY. My role has been to help the players with both their basketball shooting and rebounding as well as coming up with inbound plays.

I am well-known for my preparations, my workout equipment, and practice plans. At the end of each session, I give the client the practice sheet of all the drills we've done, including explanations as to why these drills are beneficial for that specific client.

Town League Career: led my team to the championship game four times out of six, including one undefeated season
Middle School Career: won three MVP awards
High School Career: won MVP on JV and was awarded the "Glue Guy" and Most Improved on Varsity

In the first session, I would watch the client do fundamentals such as working on shooting form, dribbling drills, etc. While he/she does the drills, I would study their style and learn more about them as an individual.

In the following sessions, I will then design the drill based on his/her abilities providing both constructive criticism to improve their confidence and record the player's performance.

*For Youth Players (13 and under), I also own a portable basketball hoop that I can take to basketball sessions.

Very prepared

Jack is a wonderful, dedicated and caring coach who really customizes his approach to the needs of his students. Our son loved working with him and looked forward to his sessions each day as he saw continual improvement. I would highly recommend Coach Jack to anyone looking for personal instruction.

My son had a great experience working with Jack over two sessions. He had a detailed plan for the sessions which he sent in writing in advance. He was very communicative about scheduling. He also sent detailed feedback about what my son can improve. Jack covered a broad range of areas and really challenged him to work hard and smart. Highly recommend.

Jack was an encouraging and thoughtful coach. We had a complicated sign up and he was patient and helpful throughout the process.

The first session went great for my son and looking forward for mores sessions. Very knowledgeable in his training of Basketball.

We had a great session. A clear set of drills to build the fundamentals which was exactly what we were looking for.

We’re headed back next weekend.

Great Coach!

Coach Mather's deep love for the game of basketball is very apparent. Over the past few years as my assistant he developed a great relationship with the players. Coach helped them understand our concepts by creating different visual and hands on tools that gave each player a better understanding of game strategies and also ideas on how to improve their own skill set.
I had coach Jack Mather as an assistant coach on The Harvey School varsity basketball team. He proved to be one of the most well-prepared, hardest working coaches I’ve ever had. He would go out of his way to look diligently for film on the other teams so we could study their plays, and he would also give us detailed index cards describing our matchups for the upcoming games. Coach Mather would use this same index card technique to help us improve on our individual skills, by giving each player on the team index cards filled with drills and workouts designed to help us improve on our weaknesses, while also improving our strengths. Coach Mather is a very easy guy to talk to, and knows how to break the game down so it is very easy to learn and understand.
Jack is an excellent person to work with. I played in a tournament with him in the fall of 2019, and he made sure that each of our teammates got involved, which highlights his selflessness. On top of that, he is incredibly hard working, which is one of his best qualities. Jack is an excellent teammate, and I’m sure he will make an excellent coach.
Jack is an extremely determined individual and player who takes his time to understand the game. I’ve seen him working diligently to improve himself time and time again. He has a great personality and is very easy to talk to. Also, your offense will be forced to improve due to his smothering defense. He’s an all around great guy.
As someone who’s played with Jack at the YMCA, he’s definitely one of the people I’ve enjoyed playing with most. He’s not selfish, focuses on the win, and he works extremely hard. Outside of games he’s practicing to become better or helping others become better. In game, he’s communicating, working hard, end playing some of the best defense I’ve seen in a pickup game
