Keep it fun, relaxed and aerobic!

Although rigorously based in science and empirical testing, my approach to coaching focuses on keeping workouts fun and largely aerobic while building efficient relaxed movement with good form, with workouts building in duration and intensity very gradually over time.

When it comes to endurance athletics, no pain no gain simply doesn't apply. Pain and soreness are usually a sign that something is wrong and that the duration and intensity of workouts or the amount of rest needs adjusted. With few exceptions athletes should finish workouts feeling like they could do more - or what one might call pleasantly tired.

My proven coaching methods have worked with athletes of all kinds from junior- and high school young people training for soccer, lacrosse or cross country, adults training for military, police or FBI fitness tests, injured or out of shape athletes getting back into shape, and elite athletes training for regional, national or world championships.

The workouts vary depending on the athletes current fitness, injury history, workout time availability and goals but the basic approach is the same - gradually build aerobic fitness and smooth efficient relaxed form through scientifically-grounded yet fun workouts.

If the workouts aren't generally pleasant, manageable, largely pain-free and fun, the athlete won't continue to do the workouts over time.

After light warmup, I explain the session and then watch my athletes, giving form and other tips.

For me, one of the keys in endurance sports is relaxed efficient motion, so I work with athletes to fix problems in form and with relaxation.

Since nearly all the events my athletes compete in are aerobic in nature, I have athletes calculate heart rate zones and use heart rates to keep their efforts aerobic and fun.

My sessions build gradually from easily achieved distances and speeds to more demanding sessions. A good coach and solid plan allows the athlete to improve gradually, without much pain, soreness and without any injuries over months and months.

Relaxed aerobic exercise is the foundation for endurance athletic success.

Although I generally coach distance oriented athletes, but as a middle distance runner (800, 1000, 1500) and coach, I also coached athletes training for both speed and endurance. 800 meter runners not only run very fast 50s, 100s, 150s and 200s in training, they usually run in the 4 x 400 relay in addition to running middle and long distance races. And many 800 meter runners run the 500 or 600 indoors, which are races that 400 meter specialists do. As a result, many 800 meter runners can run relatively fast in the 200 (my best was 23.1) but also fast longer road races - for example, I average 5:48 per mile for 30k (18.6 miles).

I learned much of what I know about coaching for speed from my 16 years training and coaching at UCLA's track (where speed gurus Bob Kersee and John Smith coached dozens of world record holders and gold medalists). I know endurance training extremely well. but my speed coaching is also very high level.

I've really enjoyed working with Glenn, who had gotten me out of my running rut. After decades of running, I never felt like I was actually improving. With workouts based on heart rate, which alternate between track intervals, hill running, and weekly long runs, I'm feeling a lot better now after each workout.

My son was looking for a coach so he could pass his police academy fitness run. Although a pretty good athlete who exhibited skills in short distance (sprints) he was challenged by longer distances. A must to move on in the academy. Coach Glen provided both a method (heart rate monitoring) and confidence for him to pass the first trial. Over a number of weeks at a local track Coach Glen, with a plan based on years of running experience, made it happen. Not sure what he would have done without his help.

I did not run track or cross country in high school, so I knew little when I decided to make running my preferred sport. Glenn patiently guided me to increase the duration of my runs, build stamina, and build speed in part by teaching me to focus on my heart rate when I run. In the beginning, I met Glenn on the trails for longer runs; now, I enjoy meeting Glenn at the track.

My weekly runs have become a pleasure rather than a chore, and I credit Glenn for this. In the beginning of our training, he insisted I run slowly - painfully slowly - to build endurance rather than speed. Over time, I more than doubled the number of miles I run a week. As our sessions progressed, he added speed training, and I now I run faster than I have in years.
