More About Coach Giovanni

I began coaching track in 2014 with Emerald Valley Track Club as the jumps coach. I worked with athletes ages 8-18. I have also officiated at for the junior olympic state meet in Oregon and Region 13 meets officiating the decathlon. I worked for 3 years at Lane Community College in Eugene Oregon (track town USA) coaching sprints and the multi-events and throws. I have lost count of the kids who I've worked with who ended up competing across every collegiate level from NAIA to NCAA DI. I was the personal coach of Emily Stefan from the age of 15, who this year in (2026) broke the Boise State school record in the Pentathlon and recorded a school record time as part of the 4x100m relay.

In highschool I was a 4 year letter winner and I went to state 3 times for the triple jump. As a freshman at Lane I became an all american in the decathlon and placed at conference in hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. I then moved to Portland on a scholarship to Concordia University where I competed as a decathlete. By my senior year I had broken my own decathlon record 4 times, became an all american for NCAA, and earned male athlete of the year. I was also all-academic for the NCAA in 2018 and 2019. I placed 2nd in the hurdles, 3rd in the triple jump, and I won the decathlon title in the GNAC.

When working with my athletes I will lead the athlete through a warm-up. The warm-up depends on the events the athlete will compete in. Next, we would do some specific technique development and work on the athletes form. Depending on the event we might have a strength component to the workout. At this point is when we would do a workout on the track. Then we would cool down and I would give the athlete a list of ways they could work on getting better off the track.

The level of knowledge my sons left with after only one hour with coach Gino was amazing. We are looking forward to a PR or two this week!

Gino is a fantastic coach with a diverse and expansive knowledge about the body. He uses these skills to accurately gage where to start with each individual and from there how to push them to a place where they'll be happy and excel. I decided to approach Gino for some sessions because of these quality's. Once you get some sessions in youll never regret it and be better for it. I was a beginner with trying to work out and achieve the body I wanted. He knew when to and how to push me with each session and with a lot of different routines. If you get a chance give him a try.

Awesome coach, worked great with my son. My son loved working with him and said “Dad can I come back next week?”. Definitely would recommend.

Great experience! Will be attending more sessions! Great instruction ,demonstration and he made it super fun!

Coach Gio was fantastic. He took my non-track athlete from a slow runner to one of the quicker boys on his teams (baseball & football). Highly recommend if your child needs some running fundamentals.

He works you hard and helps you achieve your goals.

Gino is an excellent coach! He’s very patient, encouraging, and motivating. Alexander is always excited for practice and always leaves feeling proud of himself and knowing he made his coach proud. I wish there were more hours in the day so everyone could have a chance to work with Gino!

Bella absolutely loves learning from Giovanni. He is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. We have already seen a lot of improvement in Bella’s running. We highly recommend Giovanni.

- Bella’s proud parents :)

He was exactly what I hoped for when looking for a track coach. He is extremely knowledgeable, experienced and super encouraging and kind. He made the session fun for my child and they are looking forward to their next session. He took the time to evaluate my child's individual needs and worked the session around that. Great coach, I highly recommend!

Working with Gino was the best! I trained with him throughout high school during the summers and whenever I had free time outside of my scheduled team practices. I loved these sessions because they gave me a space to continue developing my skills without the pressure that sometimes comes with club or high school coaches. Gino was incredibly encouraging and positive, which is critical for building young athletes’ confidence. I was primarily a high jumper and have since competed for Division I schools throughout all four years of college. The fundamental skills Gino helped me develop early on, along with his advice about the mental side of the sport, have stayed with me throughout my career. Although I was expected to focus on high jump and perform well for my high school team, Gino introduced me to other events like hurdles and triple jump, which kept track fun and exciting. Starting a brand-new event can be daunting, but the environment he created made me feel comfortable making mistakes and trying new techniques. Because of Gino’s kindness and extensive knowledge across so many events, I left each session feeling like I had made significant progress, and I was always excited for the next one.
Working with Gino since my freshman year of high school completely shaped the athlete and person I am today. He not only helped me lay the foundation that led me to my dream of competing at the Division 1 level, but he also made sure I stayed academically focused and challenged me to explore all my college options. He was never concerned about the level I competed at, all he wanted was for me to have the best experience throughout my next chapter of life. Even now, being in my 5th year of collegiate track and field, we’ve kept in touch, and I still reach out to him when I’m home for breaks to get quality coaching in. Gino taught me the fundamentals and continued to build on them, pushing me to reach the level I'm at now. He planted the seed for trying out new events and becoming a multi early on. That being said, I now hold the school record in the pentathlon and #4 all-time in the heptathlon. Without his impact, I can confidently say I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m incredibly grateful for everything he’s done for me, both as an athlete and as a person.
I had the privilege of working with Gino as my decathlon coach at Lane Community College, and I can say without hesitation that his impact on my athletic development was transformative. When I first began training under Gino, I was a junior college athlete with potential but limited structure and refinement. Through his coaching, I was able to elevate my performance to the level required to compete at the NCAA Division I level, ultimately earning a place on the University of Oregon track and field team. Gino’s strength as a coach lies in his ability to develop the complete athlete. In an event as demanding as the decathlon, that means technical expertise across multiple disciplines, strategic programming, and a deep understanding of how to balance performance, recovery, and long-term progression. He brought all of those elements together in a way that was both disciplined and highly individualized. He didn’t apply a one-size-fits-all approach—he identified my weaknesses, built a plan to address them, and consistently held me accountable to a higher standard. Equally important is his ability to motivate and build confidence. Gino has a way of pushing athletes beyond what they believe they are capable of, while still maintaining trust and respect. He created an environment where improvement was expected, but also achievable, and that mindset shift was a major factor in my progression to the Division I level. Beyond the technical and motivational aspects, Gino is a coach who genuinely invests in his athletes. He cares about their success not just in competition, but in their overall growth and trajectory. That level of commitment is rare and makes a lasting difference. I would not have reached the University of Oregon without Gino’s guidance, and I am confident he will bring that same level of impact to any program he joins. Any team would benefit from his knowledge, work ethic, and dedication to athlete development
I met Coach Gino my sophomore year at Lane Community College, when he came back to coach at his alma mater shortly after graduating from Concordia (Ore.). I can confidently say that Coach Gino changed my life, and without a doubt, it was for the better. He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself, and that belief impacted me in more ways than I can fully put into words. Now, after having the privilege of coaching collegiate athletes myself at Western Oregon over the past two years, I have a completely different perspective on just how much I appreciate what Gino did for me. Coming into coaching right after my own athletic career has made me realize how intentional, patient, and committed he was throughout my development. Gino somehow convinced a stubborn hurdler to give the multis a shot. Through all the doubt, frustration, and honestly the headaches I probably gave him, he never wavered. He always wanted what was best for me, and most importantly, he never gave up on me. It took someone as strong-willed and as intelligent as Gino to help me not only embrace the multis, but to truly fall in love with the sport as a whole. Gino can be intense, but you always know that intensity comes from a genuine place. His passion is real and it’s well-intended. At the same time, he carries a strong sense of humility while also having a high level of self-belief, which I think is a rare and powerful combination. Overall, he embodies great leadership qualities. I can confidently say I would not be the man I am today if it wasn’t for Coach Gino
