More About Coach Eric
I have been coaching middle distance and distance runners since 2010. I have worked with children as young as 7 years old up to middle age adults. I most often work with high school age athletes in cross country and track and field for their high school teams, USATF Junior Olympics and AAU track and field. In that time I have coached AAU and USATF Junior Olympic All-Americans, and a National Champion in the steeplechase. Multiple district, area, regional champions in track and cross country and UIL and TAAPS medalist.
My personal athletic accomplishments are pretty insignificant. I had an active childhood playing organized sports. In high school I played football. I wasn't very big, strong or fast but I worked hard and did all my coaches asked of me so they found a useful purpose for me on special teams. I was the deep snapper for punts, extra points and field goals as well as a blocker and gunner of kick return and kick off team. Everything I have learned about coaching I have learned because of the athletes I trained didn't have they type of coach they needed to accomplish their goals. They asked for my help and I became the type of coach they needed. We have had a lot of success but it is the passion of the athletes that has paved the way.
I am solidly in the camp of "miles makes champions". But not mileage for mileage sake but a health first approach and setting realistic goals. Cardiovascular efficiency produces the greatest and most lasting results so that is my greatest focus throughout the process. Fartleks, tempo runs, intervals, specific speed work are all tools that I use to develop an athlete but they must be done in the proper sequence. Like the great Arthur Lydiard said "Everyone knows the ingredients but few know the recipe." I believe in the recipe that I have developed over the past several years and maintaining an athletes health is the most important aspect of it.

Client Reviews
Julian Perez - West Brook senior, district champion in cross country, 1600m and 3200m (Testimonial)
After 4 years of running with Coach Mendez, I realize that he is the only coach that could get me to where I am. Coach Mendez has pushed me, trained me and kept me injury free for all four years of my high school running career. He has taught me discipline, effort and the will to win. If you want to be a competitive distance runner who will get better every year, stay free of injury and is willing to work hard then Coach Mendez is the coach for you.
Coach Brittany Granger - 2015 Southeast Texas Coaches Assoc. girls track coach of the year. (Testimonial)
As a track coach I have followed the advice and training techniques of Eric Mendez with my middle distance and distance runners for the past 5 years. He has an immense amount of knowledge and uses it to its full potential. His training is based on specific pacing goals then allowing full recovery. It's amazing to watch the last 300m of any race to see the amount of kick they have because of the increased recovery time from their training. I highly recommend Coach Mendez to work with any athlete. I promise that you will see results.
Jordan Welborn, freshman XC and Track and Field athlete at the University of Texas (Testimonial)
My love of with the sport of running in middle school. Going into my freshman year of high school I began working with Coach Mendez. With his training knowledge I was able to become the district champion in both the 1600m and 3200m as well as qualify for state as a freshman. During my time in high school, I became a 3 time state qualifier in cross country and track, a 9 time district champion in track, and eventually earned the runner up spot at the Texas UIL 5A State Championships in both the 1600m and 3200m. As a freshman I didn't realize how much it was going to take to be able to accomplish these things, yet with the help of Coach Mendez I was able to reach the aspirations that I set to achieve. He challenged me each and every day to become the best runner I could be. Because of the dedication and drive that he had in helping me reach my goals, I am now a collegiate runner for the University of Texas.
Richard Kirschner, father of All State cross country runner Caroline Kirschner (Testimonial)
Coach E did a great job training and preparing my daughter for this past years high school cross country season. He provided her with detailed training plans over the summer that helped to not only build her endurance, stamina and physical attributes, but through his caring, motivation and encouragement, helped to, more importantly, build her confidence and mental fortitude. She was able to win several local races and significantly improve her standing during the fall TAPPS 5A District and State races. I'm now looking forward to see how far she fares with the upcoming track season.
Tye Norman, Lamar University Track and Field/Cross Country Athlete (Testimonial)
Eric Mendez is a dedicated, skilled and passionate coach who was instrumental in my development as a runner. He is very structured in his programs but also listens very well to his athletes to adjust workouts and training as needed, with being injury free as a major priority. I came to Eric as a young high school runner with very little knowledge on the fundamentals of training, and he helped me grow to enjoy track and cross country on a much greater level and to encourage me to reach my full potential, resulting in me becoming an NCAA Division I track and field athlete.
Tim Nance, Father of Bret Leigh Nance, Sr. Blanco High School. TX UIL 3A 1600m State Champion (Testimonial)
Coach Mendez came into Bret Leigh's running life about a year ago. In that short time he as helped her performance and improved her understanding of the science of running, taking her to a whole new level. We totally trust his guidance, and direction and believe his coaching methods will help her reach her potential and at the same time keep her healthy.
