More About Coach Dusty

I have over 15 years of coaching and competitive experience, working with athletes and individuals aged seven to seventy with diverse backgrounds. I coached middle school, high school, and college athletes to improve strength, conditioning, and speed. I own Excel Fitness (see dustyroady.com) and train in my facility or outdoors. I was a personal trainer at Gold's Gym, Bay Clubs (also worked as Aquatics Director), and the JCC. I am an ACE-certified personal trainer, USAT level II coach, USATF coach, a certified soccer coach, and an associate triathlon coach with Whole Athlete. I am licensed with the California Interscholastic Federation. I have coached soccer, volleyball, and softball.

I have the skilled ability to teach, train, coach, and work exceptionally effectively with adolescents, adults, and even families. I have a keen knowledge of the human body and an awareness of human development, both physical and psychological. I act as an advocate, inspiring each individual to personal growth and balance in sport and life. I employ high standards of training techniques and strategies in a safe and age-appropriate environment to help athletes define themselves as exceptionally strong and capable individuals for a lifetime of sport and physical activity.

I am a competitive athlete in multi-sport, running, swimming, and powerlifting. I have logged almost 50 races, with ten first-place finishes and 32 podium spots. I was a sponsored athlete (Team Claritin/Aquaphor and Sportpharma) for two years, and remain a ranked age-group triathlete. I am a world-ranked powerlifter, competing in eight events with over 30 first-place wins. I received honorable mentioning Powerlifting USA Magazine and ranked in the top in Powerlifting Athletes USA. I also competed in one body-building show (more curious than anything) and won the 35+ category.

I have designed training programs for over 100 clients, including swimmers, runners, and triathlete; as well as strength training/cardio plans for individuals and small groups. I designed sports-specific strength programs for two nationally-ranked Marin rowers. One of my triathletes, who used to finish in the middle of the pack, now ranks continuously first and second in her age group and has a lot more fun in the sport. One of my high school baseball players improved his speed enough to make the varsity team as a sophomore.

Each session is designed around the client(s). I always have an initial conversation to dig into history and goal. I then like to evaluate and take some baseline metrics. For example, if I have a runner I will evaluate form, determine biomechanical corrections needed, and work on specific drills for improvement. I would time a distance relevant to the sport if applicable (as a 50m or shuttle run for a baseball player) or perform a cadence count.

I like to take the holistic view of looking at all aspects involved and work on a continual program designed to meet goals. Success is a journey, not a destination. I encourage athletes to dream, to test and stretch their limits to reach great personal accomplishment.

Client Reviews

‘In 2006, I decided I wanted to learn how to weight train but gyms intimidated me and I didn't want to injure myself. I then met and began working with Dusty, who was the strength and conditioning coach for my son's high school varsity baseball team. Dusty looked at me during one strength workout and said, "You need to commit to an event and train for it. How about the Tiburon Triathlon?" I thought she was crazy! Why on earth would I do that? But as it turned out, I'd never been given better advice. With Dusty’s coaching I was prepared for and executed the race easily. I would recommend Dusty for this type of strength training, motivation and workout coordination without hesitation. I'm in great shape and have an experience that will last in my memory for a lifetime, as well as a commitment to the Breast Cancer Cause for as many years to come as it takes to find that cure.
‘Dusty is helping me train for my first half marathon. If you tell Dusty your training goals she always helps you reach them.’
‘Dusty taught me how to run correctly—how to conserve energy, the importance of the right body position, to remember to have a focus, and where the focus should be. Dusty has the ability to see all these things and more.’
‘Dusty is amazing. After a 13-year hiatus and having three children, I decided to start playing soccer again. I played and had a fantastic time, but there was nothing worth noting about my performance. Then I worked with Dusty, who researched special exercises, stretches, and plyometrics that would benefit my soccer game. We focused on sprints and general strength training. This year I scored 16 goals in 10 games, more than I had scored in any season. I became faster and stronger because of the personalized, sport-specific work I did with Dusty. The change has been truly remarkable.’ (Note: Annelise used her skills to score an impressive victory at the 2008 San Francisco Great Urban Race.)
‘Owner and head coach Dusty Roady is the very definition of supportive and positive. Her nurturing attitude and profound knowledge have a powerful impact on the progress of everyone who trains with her, whether a neophyte to the world of working out or a pro athlete. Dusty is focused, defining each individual client's needs and transforming those needs into attainable goals. Her personal experience as a coach and world-class competitor make her a rich resource, allowing each of her trainees to learn and develop at his or her best pace. Dusty is a gem who never pushes too hard, but motivates each client to attain maximally what she or he can. Regardless of where you're coming from or what shape you're in, after working with Dusty, you'll begin feeling that your workout is a high point of your day!’
‘In December, I committed to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I found Dusty through a client of hers, and I am so glad I did. We worked out, developed a training schedule for mileage, and came up with strength workouts I could take on the road during my constant traveling. Dusty's expertise in the areas of fitness, nutrition, and racing assisted me in becoming the best possible walker I could be for the 39.3-mile walk this past weekend.’
‘Before coming to Whole Athlete (Dusty, associate coach) I thought I could manage the multisport lifestyle and coach myself. As a result, without understanding the concept of periodization or trusting the benefits of tapering, I went into each event physically exhausted and mentally fatigued. My performance suffered and so did my love for triathlon. I was turned over to coach Dusty Roady, who took me to the track for a running form analysis and devised strength training workouts that took minutes off my run time. Dusty recommended books on developing my neglected mental game. Dusty has changed my life. She knows her stuff, is a true professional, and understands me as an athlete. She knows exactly what to say to challenge, encourage, and inspire me. Dusty is always available and makes me feel like I am her #1 priority. My training plans are customized and stretch my athletic abilities. I now go into races fully prepared, rested and motivated to succeed. Dusty has such confidence in my ability that she encouraged me to try more challenging races. Before being coached by Dusty, I would have never considered doing big events like Escape from Alcatraz & the Ford Ironman 70.3 series. I would have never felt the success of accomplishment as I did when I qualified for the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater!’
‘What I appreciate most about Dusty (as my trainer) is her thoughtful and intelligent approach to it all. I’ve a fitness program that feels customized to my needs and sustainable in my very busy life. I love the way Dusty connects what and how we do our workouts to the why and the impact of them. Dusty breaks it down and changes it up: she is creative and keeps things interesting and motivating. She teaches me something new at almost every session. I have learned so much about how it’s all connected and I am conscious about integrating fitness into my life beyond our workouts.’
