More About Coach Dunte

Hurdle races are about aggression, speed, technique, and rhythm. You bring the aggression and I'll help you become faster, smoother, and more consistent.
I was a high school hurdler who had to figure things out with no coach. Then I found success in other sports during college before returning to the hurdles as an open-class decathlete. I've let go of the multis to just focus on the hurdles again. In coaching, I help athletes get faster, regardless of their sport, but spent 2022-2023 school year building a hurdles program at a middle school. Now I'm returning to that middle school program, developing a state-bound 110m hurdler, and making my own return to masters athletics.

If you're a junior (12+) or a masters athlete (35+) in the short or long hurdles, I can help you run a better race this year -- a smoother, faster, better race.

My approach is mostly my own, as developed in 11 years as a speed & strength coach to DIII through semi-pro athletes. You'll find influence from Alec Holler's approach to Feed The Cats, Steve McGill & Hector Cotto's Downhill Hurdling programs, and Boo Schexnayder's ideas about developing power in sprinters.

What you'll find most is that you train LESS, yet hurdler smoother and race faster!

D-end recruit, Texas Tech rugby outside center, high school & masters sprint hurdles, masters decathlon, weightlifter.
But it's not about me. I've helped prospects make DI and DII and DIII programs, helped amateurs go semi-pro and national and world class, helped masters get into and stay in the sprints & hurdles, and helped a lot of second-stringers go starting varsity. My athletes' accomplishments say more than my career ever will.

Speed, technique, rhythm -- that's the core of sprint hurdling and that's the focus of training sessions. A hurdler doesn't have to be the BEST sprinter, but you have to be a GREAT sprinter, so we emphasize speed first and foremost. That means timed reps over known distances, great technique, and lots of rest.
Then we layer in hurdle technique. When hurdle technique is consistent -- not perfect, just the same every time -- we focus on rhythm over hurdles. But I don't believe in volume training. You aren't going to do a lot of work just to say you did a lot of work. Every minute of a session, from the speed drills to the sprints, from the technique work to hurdle endurance, is about quality. When you've had your best rep of the day, the session is over. Go home, get rest, show up ready to get better next time.

We measure and/or time everything, so there's no hoping and there's no guessing in our program. Just quality work and plenty of evidence. Thus, there is guaranteed improvement.
