More About Coach Dunte

As a coach, I have helped 250+ athletes in track & field, ultimate, and rugby run faster and heal up from nasty injuries.

I was a high school hurdler who had to figure things out with no coach. I found success in other sports during college then returned to track as an open-class decathlete. Now, as a Masters athlete, I'm racing the hurdles again in addition to having a little fun in Highland Games, weightlifting, and track cycling.

If you're a Masters athlete (any working adult ready to compete!) in the hurdles or combined events, I can help you have a healthy season that leads to your fastest season yet. If you're a high school sprinter/hurdler, I can help you with technique & speed in events up to 400m so you set PRs next season.

My approach to speed & technique coaching has been developed over 11 years working with high school, collegiate, and semi-pro athletes. What you'll remember is that you train LESS, yet race faster!

I am a: Masters 110m hurdler and Highland Games lightweight thrower.

I have been a: high school hurdler and 4x2 relay sprinter, football defensive end recruit, Texas Tech rugby outside center, decathlete, and weightlifter.

But it's not about me. I've helped prospects make DI college programs, helped club amateurs go semi-pro and reach National Chamionships, helped Masters get into and stay in the sprints & hurdles, and helped a lot of second-stringers go starting varsity.

My athletes' accomplishments say more than my sport career ever will.

Speed, technique, rhythm -- that's the core of hurdling so that's the focus of training sessions. Hurdlers and multis don't have to be the BEST sprinters, but you have to be a GREAT sprinter, so we emphasize speed first and foremost.

After a posture- & power-focused warmup, you run timed reps over known distances. We emphasize great technique and take lots of rest.
Then we layer in hurdle (or jump) technique. When technique is consistent -- not perfect, just the same every time -- we focus on rhythm over hurdles or in your approach.

I don't believe in volume training, even for a combined events athlete. You aren't going to do a lot of work just to say you did a lot of work. Every minute of a session, from the speed drills to the sprints, from the technique work to speed endurance, is about quality. When you've had your best rep of the day, the session is over. Go home, get rest, then show up ready to get better next time.

We measure or time everything, so there's no hoping and there's no guessing in my programs. Just quality work and plenty of evidence. Thus, there is guaranteed improvement.

Client Reviews

Great attitude and approach to the training sessions. Very knowledgeable and works well with young athletes. Looking forward to progress with future training for hurdles and sprints.

UPDATED REVIEW: It's hard for me to find words that adequately describe how terrific Dunte is, because you'd think I'm his uncle or brother-in-law. I started running competitively at age 49 and I'm now 75. Dunte is my third coach, and I've possibly already gotten more helpful coaching from him in two months than I got from my previous coaches in 10 years and 7 years. Dunte strikes the difficult balance between critique and correction on the one hand and praise and encouragement on the other hand. He tells me what he wants me to do ... why he wants me to do it ... demonstrates how to do it ... then watches as I do it--sometimes videoing--commenting on what was good and what needs work. On the practical side, he's superb, as we work out our schedule, where we'll meet, and after each session provides a summary of what we did, conveys my "homework," and what we'll do next. I could go on, but conclude by again saying "terrific."
MY FIRST REVIEW: I was most impressed by his probing questions about why I run, what I want to accomplish, what I want from him as a coach. This process was 45 minutes, before we did anything specific with my actual running. Then we did a series of drills, with his commentaries on what he saw in those drills and what that means about what he can do for me. Plus ... he is personable, respectful, incisive, constructive. In short, he is already my favorite among the three coaches I've had over the past 19 years.

Three words: Professional, Educated, Savvy

Coach Dunte is doing an excellent job. Very detail oriented, specific, and skilled.

excellent session today. Thanks, Coach!!!

Dunte is a great coach. His skill and experience allow him to expertly curate a plan tailored to an athlete’s unique set of needs.

Coach Dunte stood in the pouring rain to coach me. He was patient and informative. I had a blast and came away excited to continue the journey.

My daughter has really enjoyed her sessions with Coach Dunte. He is knowledgeable and passionate about his sport and if you are looking for that extra edge, i think he can help you reach your goals.

Amazing coach, learned so much from only five sessions. You can tell he knows what he’s doing. Highly recommend.

Coach Dunte has been a great coach for Bailey!! He is improving her skill and times!! Looking forward to more sessions with him!!

Coach Dante accesses, evaluates, and makes a solid plan with the athlete. He gives great advice on what is needed to fuel the athlete and how to recover. Comes prepared and is ready for every coaching session and expects the same preparation for physical and mental accountability for the athlete to be successful. Very professional and has a wonderful sense of humor. He makes it fun even through challenging parts. My daughter says he is awesome, outstanding, easy to work with, and has a small weather magic wand that comes out sometimes (meaning somehow he can pick the perfect time when the weather cooperates for a smooth coaching session... :). We recommend Coach Dunte and look forward to a wonderful successful year.

Our son won several team awards for an amazing season. He set a PR at Leagues for 300m hurdles and ran a windy PR in the 110. He has progressed a lot this year!
Our graduating senior had some great success with him this season!
