More About Coach Don

I am a professional strength and conditioning specialist, certified personal trainer, lecturer, educator, and motivator. I received my undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and I am currently pursuing my graduate work at the University of Texas. I hold numerous industry credentials most notably The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT and RSCC (RSCC Registry). I currently sit on the NSCA Hawaii State board of Advisors. I have worked with Athletes of every level from grade school to professional athletes of the PGA, MLB, NBA, and NFL.

I have personally competed in cross-country with a PR of 17:30 5K for St. Joseph Regional HS in Montvale NJ. I was recruited to compete at the collegiate level however decided to focus on academics. Additional competitive highlights include Wrestling (112,119) and later 2nd Degree Black Belt Martial Art Instructor United States Marine Corps.

Athletes will always begin with soft tissue work and muscular activation. Following with a comprehensive dynamic warmup designed to activate neuromuscular connectivity. An element of Power development followed by strength work. Concluding with core work and isolated exercises as required based on the athlete's program design.

I just started working with coach Don and I confidently feel like this is the go to coach. His overall knowledge is vast. He literally can go into every detail of why a muscle component or joint isn't functioning properly with the rest of your body starting from bottom to top. For example..I'm a pretty strong athlete and I do a lot of boxing. He took me through a few exercises to see where I struggled and automatically could see how tight my shoulders were and how they didn't coincide with the rest of my frame. In other words I couldn't hold my arms up straight overhead. He broke down every muscle in my shoulder area to what needed to be loosened and what needed to be strengthened. We went through quite a few stretches, muscle specific rolling out exercises, and very proper strengthening exercises(he can be very picky about doing an exercise as proper as possible but it is for your benefit). I can actually put my arms in positions that honestly I have never in my life been able to and I definitely have a quicker snap in my punch. With hard work and dedication working with coach don, he can definitely push you to your highest peak.

I was a very in-experienced runner, but I ran between 3-7 miles several times a week. However, I suffered from a previous stress fracture in my shins, and bad shin splints a year before. Don identified countless things wrong with my running form. And over the course of approx. 2 months of correcting the way I ran, my shin splints were almost gone, and once he started teaching me how to use the Foam Roller, it is now completely gone! I cut my running time for 3 miles from 35 minutes to 26 minutes, and 5 miles from 50 minutes to 42 minutes. I was able to increase my speed and distance up to 7 miles. I would usually run from Kapolei HS to Ewa Beach and back on the daily. The most priceless thing that I received from training with Don was not just showing me how to train better but educating me in the process. From all the years of education and experience he has in this field, he was able to teach me throughout my entire training about why we were doing what we were doing, the mechanics behind it all.
As a firm believer in fitness challenges, I participated in many short and long distance races to test my physical limit. I was not educated in terms of a balanced training plan and wore my body out as a result. I couldn’t understand why I would systematically injure different parts of my lower body even though I took proper rest and care. Fast-forward four years from my last marathon and you will see a totally different athlete. I am no longer in pain and in the best physical condition I have ever been. With Don Pump as my coach, I have more confidence that the mechanics of proper form are thoroughly incorporated into my fitness program. Don applies scientific principles to construct personalized fitness coaching programs with intentions to correct any imbalances that causes injuries. Most importantly, Don’s fitness program enables one to strengthen essential muscle groups to prevent further injury. My overall wellness has improved since employing Don as my coach. Before coming out to Hawaii and working with Don I would experience back pain so severe that it would limit my practice time and keep me from completing my scheduled time on the course.
