More About Coach Derrick

My coaching methodology is based on utilizing performance assessments, analytics, intuition, testing, and experience to develop the most effective coaching plan to help you achieve your goals as an athlete in less time and with superior results. The key is training smarter not harder by using regular testing to help inform your workouts and to ensure you achieve your goals.

I bring coaching experience in strength and conditioning, general fitness, nutrition, ice hockey, soccer, and track and field. I have worked with youth athletes, club athletes, middle school athletes, high school athletes, junior/academy level athletes, college athletes, and professionals both on an individual and team setting. I'm well versed in utilizing science, biomechanics, video analysis, and testing to help you identify the best areas for you to work on and to best position yourself to excel as an athlete within a team setting. My strategies consider how to utilize your strengths to minimize your weaknesses to ensure you're able to progress injury free and to continue to make improvements while staying in top performance shape.

I am the Director of Performance and Player Development for Champions Combine. I recently was the Director of Sports Performance and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Tier I AAA Team Maryland ice hockey program where I provide sports performance training, injury treatments, and recovery treatments for 140 hockey players across 7 boys' hockey teams between U11 to U18. Over the course of my time with TM, no player experienced S&C related injuries and I was able to address injuries in hockey players within the program returning them to play within less than a week of receiving treatments from me. I was also an affiliate strength and conditioning coach for Northeast Sports Training and Rehabilitation and Black Bear Sports Group, where I worked with junior ice hockey players on the USA Hockey Tier II North American Hockey League (NAHL) Maryland Black Bears team, for draft prospects of the USA Hockey Tier I United States Hockey League (USHL) 2023 Clark Cup Champion Youngstown Phantoms. I have previously interned at Mike Boyle's Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) in Woburn and Middleton, Massachusetts. I have coached middle school soccer and track and field teams that have resulted in a majority of my athletes making their varsity program. I have coached high school soccer and ice hockey. I have coached at the midget and junior level for ice hockey. I also have extensive experience working with athletes from 8 to 22 years old both in general fitness as well as skill development. In my various capacities as a team coach, skills coach, and strength & conditioning coach - the athletes I have worked with were noted for their exceptional improvement and ability to contribute in new and challenging settings. Many of my athletes have gone on to play at the club/academy soccer level, junior and college ice hockey level, etc - winning State and League Championships at their next respective level. As a Track and Field coach, my teams have won the States Championship and finished as the runner-ups twice in New Hampshire. Many of the hockey players I have coached have also been selected for the NH Festivals Team and attended Regionals Camp.

My experience as an athlete was with soccer (attacking mid fielder), ice hockey (center), and track and field (multi, decathlon) at a private prep school, Junior A ice hockey team, club soccer team, and a NESCAC member school. In high school, our soccer team and hockey team played for the State Championship. In college, the hockey team made it to the league finals twice. I was voted MVP for my college track team and was consistently noted for my leadership, work ethic, and improvement on my soccer and hockey teams. While in college, I also worked with the coaching staff on video analysis and strength programs.

Once my playing days were over, I stayed involved with soccer as a USSF and high school referee and ice hockey as a Level 3 USA Hockey Official where I've worked over 2,000 games ranging from youth hockey, midgets, juniors, and club college. I have officiated regular season and playoff hockey games in the Eastern Hockey Federation, Elite 9, United States Premier Hockey League, Eastern Hockey League, Mass Premier Development Hockey League, and the NA3EHL.

My sessions are designed to challenging, fast paced, and varied. In order to keep the body constantly guessing, I use different variations of the same exercise so muscle memory can learn the movement so it becomes instinctual while forcing the muscles, twitch fibers, and mind to constantly adapt. This process will yield more results in less time.

My workouts begin with a dynamic warm up to get the blood moving, to loosen the joints, and stretch out your muscles. Once an athlete is beginning to breathe hard, starting to sweat, and ready to go we will move into movements and drills to focus on the objective for the workout whether it be general athletic performance, ball skills, puck handling, starts and stops, sports IQ, etc. Each workout will engage the mind in the execution of the exercise or drill. It will also work on multiple objectives to benefit a common aim and purpose. For example, by utilizing drills that are multi-dimensional, the brain will be forced to manage multiple different stimuli and process all the data points to improve decision making times as well as training muscles/body to react quickly, accurately, and under pressure. In the end, you'll gain techniques you can transfer into sports specific situations. To ensure you are able to respond in game like situations based on muscle memory, we break down the movements into its component parts and utilize repetition until the movements become second nature for you.

Sample Training Session:

- Half Circle / Figure 8 Skating Drills (10 minutes)
- Explosive Starts (15 minutes)
- Stickhandling and Coordination Drills (30 minutes)
- Passing Drills (15 minutes)
- Pressure and Battle Drills (5 minutes)

Super knowledgeable - his workouts were tailor made for me based on what I told him I was trying to accomplish. I like that the workouts were not boring and he changed them up, including new interesting exercises each session.

Coach Derrick was great! He asked great questions to determine my goals, evaluated a couple of the exercises that I had trouble with, suggested additional exercises and provided reasons why they would complement my current program, and made other recommendations to improve my overall training. I highly recommend Coach Derrick!

We booked 5 sessions with Coach Derrick, we took only the first session and my son decided he doesn’t want to proceed with the rest of the sessions. He told us if dad can coach me better than him, why would we pay $120/hr.

We have just started out with Coach Derrick and so far it has been great. He is so educated and up to date with training styles and techniques and is highly educated in Kinesiology and Fitness. I know that my son is in safe hands that will help him develop.

Coach Derrick did a great job with my son who is a hockey player. He's a wealth of information and we whole-heartedly recommend Derrick for strength and conditioning training. Thank you!

We had a great experience with Coach Derrick. He is very knowledgeable and personable. Our son had a great experience. I highly recommend him.

Amelia loved her lesson and is looking forward to the next 4 sessions!

Not passionate really lethargic charges too much for too little

My kids did their first training session with Derrick, he put them through the ringer! He was great at customizing a training program based on specific things we wanted to work on. The kids came away very tired, But came away with more knowledge!

My daughter learned a lot quickly and has a lot more confidence in herself.

My son, Bryan, worked with coach wong in power and strengthen in ice hockey. Coach Wong is well prepared for the training. He is also very observative towards my son's weakness and willing to share all his profession to us. It is a great help to my son to next level. Look forward to work again with coach and highly recommended to other players.

Coach Derrick is awesome! My sons confidence skyrocketed after just one session with him. Great personality, great with kids, and easy to schedule sessions with. We took several sessions with Coach Derrick and will continue to keep in touch with him if we need additional help or to brush up on any skills needed. I would absolutely recommend him for any age player. Thank you Coach Derrick!

I started playing ice hockey as an adult about eight years ago. I play men’s recreational hockey and Derrick is my coach. My goal is to learn more of the skills and techniques that I’ve missed out on, having never played youth hockey. He offered to come to one of my games and observe so that the instruction could be well tailored to me. We followed that up with on-ice instruction. Derrick had a set of drills and exercises that were directed towards improving my game in specific ways according to his observations. He also provided good explanation of why we were doing each drill and how I should use the lesson when I play. I’ve been able to carry the instruction forward into my recreational play and improve already. I’m looking forward to continuing with Derrick.

Derrick is very knowledgeable and professional. He has a very good understanding of the structures and functions of muscles. He uses this knowledge to help his students improve their performance in sports, and also teaches them how to prevent injury by using proper stretching and body mechanics.
In addition, Derrick immediately picked up on some muscular issues that our son was having, which was effecting his ability to run and participate in sports to his fullest potential. He is helping us to develop a plan to strengthen and stabilize his muscles. His approach is very well rounded and we are happy we found him to work with our son!

Derrick is very observant, and provides helpful analysis of my strengths and weaknesses. He listens to what I want to work on, and tailors the session to develop those skills. He's a great coach.

At our first session, it was discovered my son is made for distance running and not a sprinter. We know get to see Coach Derrick in action in shaping him to reach his full potential. Thank you Coach Derrick.

We completed a series of 6 sessions of soccer with Coach Derrick. He was responsive in scheduling, and we appreciated that he consistently gave extra time and instruction. One unique advantage was Derrick's connection with current and former players, who he brings to the session to give the opportunity to participate multi-player and one-on-one drills. A positive experience overall.

Coach Derrick took the time to give my son the individual attention that he was not receiving at school. He also took the time to talk to me and give me valuable insight and information for me so I can do everything I can to help my son. He was patient and extremely informative!

Dear Sirs: I would like to offer this letter as a positive recommendation for Coach Derrick Wong. My son had the opportunity to play for Coach Wong as a Junior B player with the Troy Eagles program during the 2008-2009 season. During that season, I had numerous interactions with Derrick, and I can say that he definitely was a bright spot for my son and I. From the first pre-season game that we attended, Coach Wong made himself very accessible to all of the parents, which is a pretty rare thing at this level. After games, he was always available to answer any questions or concerns that the players or parents had. He has a very good demeanor with his players, and he knows where that fine line of coach and friend exists. Derrick had numerous duties with the Eagles, one of which was gaining outside sponsorships for the program. He was directly responsible for my company’s additional monetary sponsorship for the team. My son commented on numerous occasions that Derrick is an excellent on-ice coach. He has a great understanding of the game of hockey, and can convey that understanding to his players. Off-ice, he commented that he is by far the best strength and fitness trainer that he has ever worked with. That is a pretty large statement, coming from someone who has played hockey and also raced motocross since the age of five. Coach Wong’s tough physical training regimen helped propel some of his players to the A level for this upcoming season, including my son. I feel that Mr. Wong would be a benefit to any program that he was involved with. He has demonstrated to me and my family the ability to lead when needed, and has the correct presence to inspire his players. Sincerely, K. Langel Parent of T. Langel
This recommendation constitutes my wholehearted endorsement of Derrick Wong. During the time our son was being coached by Derrick, we saw a huge growth in our son's confidence and ability level. It was as if Derrick was able to reach inside him and pull him forward into the best that he could possibly be. While Derrick worked the boys hard, he did it with a sense of humor and an effective directness which made the boys want to excel. They were very loyal to him, and learned a good deal from his quiet leadership. Never one to berate them, Derrick would instead instruct and teach. He seemed very aware of the example he was setting. He seemed very happy coaching kids, and truly interested in their development as athletes and contributing members of society. Both my husband and I would enthusiastically recommend Derrick to anyone looking for a committed, experienced, and skillful coach for young aspiring teenage athletes.
I have known Derrick Wong since 2009 and in the amount of time I have known him he has impressed me in many ways. He coached my 21 year old son back when he was 14 years old. He puts great effort into planning what to do for on and off ice practices. He taught my son quite a bit in the short time he had been coaching him. My son really responded to his coaching ways, and even has become more dedicated to hockey, working on his own away from the team - both in working to develop himself athletically and modifying his lifestyle to maximize his performance. My son has gone on to play at the Division 1 HS level as a freshman, U-18 full season midget, Tier III Junior B level, and the Tier II Junior A level. I credit my son's progression with his formidable bantam major year where he helped my son identify his hunger and drive to be an exceptional elite player. Derrick wants the players to have fun and enjoy playing the sport. He too is serious when it comes to working his players hard on and off the ice. He expects all the players to commit fully and to put their all in each effort made. His passion and enthusiasm for the sport is contagious. His players work to be their best because they sense he applies the same standard to himself. Derrick expects the kids to be respectful both at the rink and away from the rink. He develops character through hockey development. I myself have played hockey at a high level at Cushing Academy for famed coach Steve Jacobs and am overall very impressed with his knowledge and understanding of the game. His commitment level is more than most of the coaches I have been around in a long time. Derrick is one of a few coaches I have come across both as a player and parent who has inspired me. His approach and intensity is refreshing to see. My son made his varsity high school team as a freshmen and played for the top U-18 full season midget team in Massachusetts, a national playoff Tier III Junior B level, a national playoff Tier III Junior A level, and a Tier II Junior A level team. I believe Derrick had a lot to do in helping to prepare my son accomplish these impressive feats and appreciate his efforts this past year. I feel that he would be a great addition to any program or coach for any athlete looking to improve. I wish that my son had the opportunity to play and train under him for a lot longer than he was able to. J. Moody Parent of Former Player
I have known Derrick Wong since 2009 and have been impressed by his professionalism, advanced knowledge of the game, and his ability to prepare his players for the demands of high school and junior hockey. My son was a goalie on his Tier-1 midget split season program where he received excellent preparation. My own extensive playing and coaching experience gives me the necessary perspective to evaluate Derrick as a coach and leader. I must admit that, when the team was first selected, I was skeptical regarding the team’s ability to be competitive against other area Tier-1 programs. But Derrick did not let a diamond in the rough get him down. He showed exceptional commitment to create a program that would provide members on the team the ability to get in shape, fine tune their skills, learn new systems and techniques, and come together as a team. He made his knowledge of strength conditioning, skill development, and team systems tangible to a group of high school players. When the team was first picked, my son plus one other, were the only members on the team who had ever skated for a varsity high school program. By the conclusion of the split season, fourteen of the players on his team made their varsity high school team. The rest made JV. Derrick always made it clear to the players and parents that if they stayed committed to his program, their child would see significant improvements. His impressive ability at placing players on varsity teams shows his approach works. My son’s midget team often times out skated many of the top Tier-1 teams in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I attribute the quick turnaround to Derrick and his ability to challenge, motivate, and inspire his team. My son went on to become the starting goalie for his Division One high school team this past season. I attribute my son’s increased athletic play and ability to stay consistent throughout the season to Derrick. I think Derrick is an excellent coach and would prove to be an invaluable asset to any high school hockey team or athlete looking to taking his/her game to the next level. His leadership skills, coaching philosophy, and ability to motivate young adults will benefit any ice hockey student-athlete. D. Livingston Parent of Former Player and Former Coach / Player
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I write a letter of recommendation for Derrick Wong, my former coach who I got to know very well. When thinking about Derrick, some words which come to mind are: motivated, involved, hard-working, committed, and personable. He knows the game and is more than certified to work with athletes achieve their athletic goals whether it be sport specific for hockey or to improve on general athleticism via strength and conditioning, fitness, off-ice training and development, video analysis, biomechanics, etc. One of his greatest strength is conditioning. By far he was the best conditioning coach I’ve had both on and off the ice. Practice would start around 7 however he would show up with us at 5 to take us through off-ice before every practice. This off-ice would push us to our limits and really commit us to the team as well as get to know our fellow players. We would run through cardio drills and strength drills over and again and because of this I believe I was in the best shape of my life while playing for him. On the ice we would start off with a “bagskate.” This entailed us to do a suicide and upon returning back to the goal line, pulling ourselves using only our arms to the red line which would be followed by doing sit ups down to the other end. This drill became famous on our team and was a great way to discipline us when it was needed. It gave “feel the burn” a whole new meaning. After this our practice would consist of many college-pro level drills in order to create puck movement and use the open spaces of the ice. If something was not right, he would always have us do it again and again which gave him the nickname “Herb” after Herb Brooks, head coach of the U.S.A. team in 1980 when they won the gold. Derrick Wong has the information and the assets to make your hockey player, athlete, or team a winning success. With much enthusiasm, I strongly recommend Derrick Wong as a coach. Sincerely, C. Livingston Former AAA Midget Player (and standout starting Division 1 HS Goalie)
