College Running - First ran for Southern Tech in Marietta, GA and then transferred to Berry College. Was NAIA District 25 champion in 400 meter 3 times and 200 meters 2 times. Qualified for NAIA National Meet my senior year at Berry in 400 meters.

Was NAIA District 25 Men's Coach of the Year in 1986 . MVP on college teams I ran for 3 of 4 years.

Runners I've coached have won 8 high school state titles in Georgia. In college, coached runners who won 12 ASUN Conference or NAIA Distrct 25 individual championships. Coached ASUN track indoor runner of the year in 2016.

It would depend on focus of workout for that day for a distance runner, age of runner and runner's ability. Also, it hinges on what the needs are for each, particular runner and the goals that hope to be achieved. But for an example for a high school runner on an interval day:
Warm-up - 20 minutes easy
Dynamic Stretching/Drills: Ankling, A Skips X 2, B skips X2, Skip bounds X2, karaokes X2 ,Sumo Squat Walk X2, Leg swings X 2, spit squats (2 sets), hamstring sweeps, 4 X100 strides
3-4 X 1600 (early season) at pre-determined times based on current race times (3 minute recovery or slow 400 meter active recovery)

Cool Down - 20 minutes
4X100 strides smooth

Passive stretching for hamstrings, quads, calves, lower back, etc...
The goal is to teach all runners proper mechanics and mental strength. That helps in every sport. Teaching that when runners are younger keeps them from spending years improperly and developing bad habits.

Client Reviews

Coach David has been a huge help to my daughter! Her form and speed have improved. He has the experience, knowledge, and patience to work with anyone willing to do the work. He listens and tailors the training to what the athlete needs. Highly recommend him!

Coach David is great! He's been working with my daughter (Freshman in High School) to help her with speed and mechanics. she always enjoys her sessions. David is not only knowledgeable about the sport he connects with the mental and emotional state of the athlete as well.

Our first session was extremely insightful and informative. Most of it was assessment based and the plan for future workouts. Coach Poteet gave my son some great feedback and guidance that was very useful. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Great first session! David took the time to observe my son’s run and suggest adjustments that he could make to improve. He talked with him and demonstrated techniques in a manner that resonated well with him. We both appreciated our time with David.

Hello my name is Carter Holcomb, and Coach Poteet has been one of the best coaches I've ever had. He pushes me to be the best runner and person I can be. He has helped my form tremendously and has helped break any negative mentalities during my races. He helps push you past your limits and overall he has improved my running, character, and attitude. If you want to get better, I absolutely recommend coach Poteet!
Coach Poteet has been an invaluable resource for my son Matt in his quest to become the best runner he can be. His extensive knowledge of running is only surpassed by his ability to communicate the concepts to my son. As a freshman, Matt was a talented but not a serious runner and often exhibited clownish behavior in practice. Coach Poteet was able to gain his attention and respect, while fine tuning all aspects of his running. Today, Matt loves running and having success. In my observation, runners respond to Coach Poteet's custom candid coaching style and are motivated to perform. I would highly recommend Coach Poteet's coaching talents paired with any runner with the desire to be their best.
Coach Poteet is a great coach with a lot of experience and is also a great person. Poteet has helped me improve my time and fix my form a substantial amount. With his years of experience, he can adapt to each runners needs to help them get better while also having a great attitude and sense of humor while doing it. I have improved my personal record, even after being injured for a season, and I can’t credit him enough. 10/10 Coach and person.
I have had the privilege of knowing David Poteet for almost ten years. I truly admire his great ability to teach and motivate his athletes. Coach Poteet cares about his athletes beyond the track and the trails, as he genuinely wants to see them develop into productive adults later on in life. He has an incredible amount of experience as he has coached at all levels, including at the Division 1 college level. His training methods are highly effective as his athletes are always well coached and well prepared each season. David Poteet is selfless, as well as a man of character and integrity. Any parent would want someone with David’s experience, character and work ethic to coach and mentor their athlete. Sincerely, Nick Houstoulakis Marietta High School Track & Field Coach/ Teacher
Coach Poteet was my coach in youth and high school, then even in college for one year. He taught me the mental aspect of running, as well as how to run efficiently, improving turnover and other parts of running that are often ignored by runners. His coaching helped me to 4 individual state championships in track, 2 in cross country and a sub-9 minute 3200. In my first year in college, I became the only male freshman to ever win the Atlantic Sun Conference in the NCAA DI. I write this not to brag on myself, but rather to emphasize how much Coach Poteet's emphasis to every detail of running helped develop my running mentality and ability to reach a higher place to do what it takes to be successful in running.
