I was originally a baseball player who converted to track and field during my sophomore year in high school. The plan was to use sprint mechanics as a way to increase my speed in between bases. Once I became stellar at base-stealing, I was recruited to participate in track and encouraged to compete in the short sprints. It wasn't until I began competing in meets where I realized I could be great at it.
After a two year plus stint in collegiate baseball, I was injured and required surgery. It took a full year to recover. Ultimately, I became discouraged.
During my high school career, I lettered all four years, including Honorable Mention in my Junior Year. I was recruited by Florida State University where I primarily played Right Field and started each of my two seasons.
I later transferred (after rehab) to Loyola University (Maryland). My bests were 49.85/400, 23.26/200.
Upon graduation, I began work as a corporate professional. It wasn't until my daughter, a now accomplished sprinter herself, wanted to begin competing at the age of seven that I got back into it.
I believe in starting with a proper warmup routine - keeping the warmup routine in conjunction with what the theme of the practice day will be (i.e., Speed Day=Speed Warmup, Tempo=Tempo Warmup, etc.). I'd be able to assess how an athlete will perform based upon what drills they've executed properly.
After a suffcient warmup (and depending upon what our needs are), we will begin our routine. Although, I'm not hung up on phases, my philosophy is that you do need to train and challenge the right energy system at the right time. Take a look at a possible Triple Jump workout below:
I. Complete 30 item Speed Warmup Routine (working 5 biomotor skills - Speed, Endurance, Flexibility, Mobility and Coordination).
II. Walk on toes - 30M, walk on heels 30M, toes together/extend up 30M, heels together 30M, Ankling 30M, Alternate Ankling 30M, Single Leg Hops 30M, RR-LL-RR-LL x 4, R-L-R-L x4.
III. 3 x Run-Throughs (from identified "go" mark)
IV. 2 x Approach with 1st phase
V. 2 x Approach with 1st and 2nd phase
VI. 1 x Full Approach
