More About Coach Damion
My training is designed to help players actually PLAY basketball and not just do moves and over dribble. EVERYTHING we teach/execute serves a purpose. In addition, we aim to improve a players skillset to help them instinctively use in games. I provide intense, scenario-based training to help a player read, react, and make winning moves and decisions on the basketball court.
I have coached basketball at many levels since 1998. 16 of my 25 years of coaching has occurred while I was in the Air Force. I started my coaching career in Okinawa, Japan with 5-6 year old youth players eventually moving up to 13-18 girls and a men's over 30 team all before I was 26 years old. I began coaching base-level, adult men in 2003 until 2013. The highlight of that period came when I was selected to coach the All Air Force Men's Basketball team (the best players in the Air Force) for the All Armed Forces tournament and an international tournament in Belgium against allied services. I've also coached and trained club teams from 9-18 years old since 2011. In addition, I was hired to be a summer camp coach for Mercer University in 2013.
Currently, I am a Breakthrough Basketball Camp Instructor where I train and develop as many as 60 campers. In addition, I have been a certified personal trainer which helps me understand the physical attributes needed to play basketball.
Lastly I coached HS Girls Varsity and JV since I retired from the Air Force in 2014. The level of player I have coached/trained ranges from 5 year old beginner to D(G)-League Pros. The most formal certification I've held is the USA Basketball Youth Certification.
Below is a YouTube link of my son Damion Byrd II showcasing some of the skill and IQ we've developed over the years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTEg3j_BrVc. He is ranked 10th in his class in Nevada and one of the best guards on the West Coast. In addition, I train and work with Kelvin Omojola who's recently signed a professional contract to play in Germany.
I played base-level basketball in the Air Force for 7 years and High School and Junior High School in my youth. I joined the Air Force rather than pursue a college career.
As a coach I've won several military tournaments and events--I was even approached a couple of times by small college coaches to join their staff while I was still on Active Duty although I declined opting to finish my military service.
My best training achievement is my son Damion Byrd II. He has received roughly 95% of his basketball training from me and will likely start at point guard on Varsity as a Freshman for the 2018-2019 season.
Below are some of his 8th grade season highlights.

The first thing I do is ask players and their parents what their goals are in advance for me to assess what they want from working with me as well as where they believe they are from a skill development standpoint.
After that I formulate our sessions around a combination of where they believe they are, where I believe they are, and where we want to get to. I focus on ball handling (especially under duress), shooting, passing, footwork, balance, and posture.
A 60 minute session might look like this: 7 minute dynamic warm-up and footwork, 5 min stationary ball handling, 5 minute mobile ball handling, 8 min of shooting mechanics/shot builder drills, stationary catch and shoot mechanics, and catch and shooting on the move, 3 minutes of free throws, 2 minute water break. 7 minutes defensive posture and balance movements, 8 minutes of combination movements i.e. dribble move into a pull up jump shot or pass off the dribble or on ball defense into gap help off the ball into a shot from me as the coach or aid into an outlet pass received by the trainee into a transition scenario, 5 min of focused ball handling with the understanding of when and why, not just how, 5 minutes moving without the ball, 5 minutes of game specific shooting, 2 minutes of free throws, 5 minute cool down stretch, recap, and goal setting for the next session.

Coach Damion was excellent. My son really likes the style of coaching, the toughness & coach’s honesty & straight forwardness in his drills. As a single-mom that prefers no “sugar coating” , especially with a young male adult that thinks I know nothing about basketball, coach’s approach and training level addressing all the bad habits & pitfalls is exactly what I was looking for and more importantly, my son loves it, is learning from it and very interested in continuing his training with Coach D. Byrd.
Jessica (CoachUp client)
It is very assuring to meet a coach who asked questions about what we were looking for what my son’s goals are. At the end of the first training session my son was excited and looks forward to more training with coach Damien to reach his goals.
Lino (CoachUp client)
Coach Damion is seriously a very good coach my son has learned a lot for dribbling and I also like that he mainly focused on training my son on his dribbling and we also just booked another session because this coach is seriously very good. Definitely worth it.

Coach is very knowledgeable of the game. It was well worth the time and money spent. There was no wasted time we went for the whole hour. I would recommend Coach D. to anyone and when I am in the Vegas area I will definitely come back.

Coach Damion takes his time and explains the whys. He is extremely thorough and an excellent communicator. His response time is super quick! After the first session, we were given details. It’s all in the details as a parent, right?!
Todd (CoachUp client)
Highly recommended! My daughter is an advanced player and Coach Byrd is excellent at identying strengths and weaknesses in order to implement a plan to improve. My daughter loved his energy and I just wish we lived closer! Thank you so much.
Ray (CoachUp client)
Coach D is a great coach. After only 1 session with my son Ryan, Ive noticed a difference. Ryan has never been worked out as well or thoroughly as he did with Coach D. Coach D communicated well, shows patience for the younger athlete and gets the most out of every session. Cant wait for the next session!

First session with my son and it completely changed his confidence. Everything he thought he had perfected had a critique. He went home with a long list of things he needs to work on. Love coach damion’s leadership.
Heather (CoachUp client)

It was great meeting and training with Coach Byrd. I will continue training with him until the local programs reopen and potentially beyond. I feel like I got a lot out of a single session and plan to build on it with Coach Byrd.

I don't normally post reviews on products or anything else but I will on this one because I want everyone to know that Coach Damion is an awesome coach! I believe Coach Damion has everything in his arsenal to help my son improve and grow as a player and I am grateful that we found him and will be a part of my son's basketball journey.

Coach Damion is an Excellent Coach! He breaks down the fundamentals of each skill, and shows my son how, and why. He is teaching my son the game, while building his skill level the right way!
Lateefah (CoachUp client)
Coach Byrd is excellent! From the first conversation and the first session I knew he would be a great coach for my son. Coach Byrd asked my son what things he wanted to work on and improve, and from there they went to work. I could see an immediate improvement, not just with the skills training, but also my son’s attitude and confidence. We’ve done both one-on-one as well as group training sessions and both have been quality workouts with something new learned/taught in each session. We look forward to continuing our training with Coach Byrd, as he is exceptional and we are lucky to have found him!

Just moved here and my son hasn’t conditioned or played since last year March when he started the Covid lockdown. Took the initiative to ask my son what his goals are. Noticed right away what he needed to work on. Has the kid sweating. Lol. Very stern and pushes to the limit but also wants to know that my son can speak up on his comfort level to take the next step since he’s out of shape. My son is ready to go back after the first session ended and is eager to train again. Booked another 5 sessions.

My son had his first training session with Coach Damion and he is already looking forward to his next sessions! I like that he teaches the basics and fundamentals and tries to instill that it’s not all about flash, but more about doing the basics, over and over, that makes you a better player!

Coach Byrd is a great coach and knows how to coach to ability, not to current skill set. My son has learned a great deal after two sessions. Coach Byrd is extremely knowledgeable and has a burning passion for do things the right way, and this translates to success for the athlete he is training.
Quatrela (CoachUp client)
One of the best coaches. Helped improve my basketball skills!
Monica (CoachUp client)
Coach Damion did a wonderful job recognizing the fundamentals that my kiddo needed to improve her dribbling skills and getting her working towards her future goals. It was a great, hard working session and my kiddo immediately wanted to review the videos so she could key in on what she needs to work on to get better. After the session she said, "That was one of the best workouts I've ever had and I'm already focusing on what I need to do to be a better point guard". We can't wait to book our next 2-3 sessions with Coach Damion and we highly recommend him!
Jordan (CoachUp client)
Great coach, super understanding, and only wants to make you a better player. I enjoyed the whole hour. He is very supportive and has a lot of game knowledge.
Aaron (CoachUp client)
My first session with coach Damion was great. His approach to showing me things I didn’t think I needed help with, was definitely what I needed to learn to improve on. Ball handling drills, different ways to practice my shooting, and all of the other little things he pointed out to me. I felt like coach Damion is the one who will get me ready for the next level and I can’t wait for my next practice session.
Yvette (CoachUp client)
My grandsons session with Coach Byrd was excellent. He seem to be getting the footwork that's being taught. I highly recommend Coach Byrd.

Today Feb 16, 2019 was our 1st session together. I was so impressed with the patience he had with my child being that she's a junior in high school and so behind in the sport. She's been playing since 7th grade and was told by her current coach to stop ball handling because she will never be ball handler. Damion saw potential that went unnoticed with her coach at her school and I saw that it lifted my daughter's self-esteem. He's teaching her to block out those past comments and can't figure out why she's not on varsity.
One of the highlights of the session was when I wanted to rescue my daughter and my daughter wanted to give up and he wanted me to let her find her way. She hung in there and I'm glad she did, I know it would teach her endurance and or stamina for the future. I truly know this would be great for my daughter and I believe it's going to change her life and mindset for the next upcoming season.
The other highlight of the session was his recommendations on what to do at home and how he encourages recording her sessions as well as suggested possible clubs for her to attend and or think about.
He actually sees potential in my daughter as well as I, but more importantly, she does too "now." I believe this is going to boost her self-esteem in a way she never knew it could.
I've already booked our next session and plan on booking sessions 5 at a time at least if possible. I love this coach and have no interest in looking any further.
He's the real deal for sure!😊

Coach Damion was very hands-on and informative with the drills he showed my 14 yr. Old son for his first session. We will definitely be continuing with more sessions, I believe coach Damion has the experience and knowledge to give my son the skills he need to excel in this sport, I will definitely recommend coach Damion.

We were looking for a structured program to help our 13-year-old son to gain not only the skill, but also the knowledge necessary to become a great basketball player. He loves basketball and wants to play in competitive leagues. Since he's only played in the charter school circuit and in recreational leagues, we knew he was going to need an exceptional coach to help him to get to a higher skill level.
I came across the CoachUp website and perused the different coaches that were available in my area. I read Coach Damion's profile, coaching experience, and watched some of his son's training/game videos, and felt he would be a good fit for our son. However, after meeting Coach Damion and with a couple of sessions completed, I now know with certainty that he's perfect for our son. Coach Damion's training program lays out different drills and exercises for each session that are purposeful, relevant, and challenging. Coach Damion asks questions to gauge our goals and expectations, as the parents, and he also exhibits great communication with our son. In these couple of sessions, our son has already begun to understand the importance of footwork and agility, and his ball handling and shooting has already improved. Our son has gone out and practiced what Coach Damion taught him everyday and is learning the importance of taking pride in his at-home and one-on-one practice time with emphasis on "perfect practice" for success.
Our son is an amazing kid, but he has a long way to go and has a great deal to learn. For that reason, we will not hesitate to book continuous sessions with Coach Damion because we're already seeing a great change in our son under his tutelage.

Coach Damion was outstanding in the first session with my son. He pointed out both positive and negative techniques styles and demonstrated how to improve on both. There is no doubt that my son will advance his basketball skills under Coach Damion’s tutorial.
Marie (CoachUp client)
We had our first session with Coach Byrd today and it was very enjoyable. He made sure to gauge our son’s abilities before proceeding as well as keep us, the parents, involved. He took the time to explain basketball verbiage for a better mindset of the game even though it was 60 minutes long. We lookforward to the next sessions. Our son said that he liked all the drills and wants to come back! That should say it all, he’s only 8.
Roy (CoachUp client)
Damion made sure from the outset to understand what my goals were so he could cater the session to my needs & level. His attention to detail is super helpful when running through drills so you get the most out of it. Definitely recommend for athletes at any level looking not only for improving your skill set but also your mentality. Looking forward to our next session & improving!
