More About Coach Jay

I have been giving private basketball sessions in Baton Rouge since 2008. My coaching is based on the principles I learned from my own private coach, and incorporates the drills I found most helpful as a collegiate player.

I enjoy working with players of all ages and levels, but I especially enjoy the challenge of coaching teenagers, because with them I can make the biggest difference in their game. My specialties include fundamentals, dribbling, footwork, post moves, inside-pivot moves, playing off screens, the pick-and-roll, eliminating unnecessary movement, and developing mental toughness. I focus on teaching when and how to use a move based on the defender’s position and balance.

I start my sessions with a dynamic warm up, followed by skill and footwork development, conditioning, shooting, and tons of repetition. When my athlete is ready, I’ll play live 1-on-1 defense to simulate a game context. After each session, I want my athlete to feel an immediate, concrete improvement in his or her game."

I have been associated with the game of basketball since 1982. I grew up playing at the Sports Academy under Coach Les Roberts. My mentor is Coach Harvey Adger. I played on the collegiate level for three years at Concordia College in Selma.

I. Defensive Slides/Three minutes - (width of free throw line) three sets: 30 seconds on/off (27 is great)

II. Backboard Taps/Six Minutes - (with ball) 40 in a row: 10 right/left/alternating/both, rest 30 seconds, repeat three sets

III. Backboard Touch/Three minutes -- Start at free-throw line, sprint and slap backboard with both hands (net), sprint back and touch free throw line, repeat: 30 seconds on/off: 3 sets (11-plus is great)

IV. Mikan/Three minutes - (Hook right and left) 30 seconds on/off: three sets (17-plus is great)

V. Shooting Drill "10"/Six minutes - Begin at court 10 feet inside sideline; sprint and receive pass at one of 10 spots; if make, sprint out and touch court on opposite side and then come back for second shot on that side; repeat side to side until you follow shot and get your own rebound-shoot until you make it; then sprint out to touch court. If it is made, passer will rebound for you. Rest one minute and repeat, three sets. Shoot with in your range; vary spots.

VI. Heavy Rope or Regular Rope/Five minutes -- Alternate skips after 25 repetitions...run the rope...begin with right foot only/left/both/alternate/scissors/cross feet/twice under/crossover with arms: then repeat everything with rope in opposite direction (jump backwards) Note: Follow heavy rope directions only for regular jump rope

Coach J is a great basketball coach! I'm a point guard going into the 9th grade. Coach shows me new drills that help me do my position better.

My son have learned a lot in only one week. He is looking forward to his next session.

Coach J workout was great and learn some new drills to do at home. They actually take their time to work with you and show you what to do.

Coach J, met with my 8 year old son on yesterday for a 1 on 1, basketball training. He was very professional, consistent, and patient with my child. My son enjoyed working with Coach J, and we continue to use him weekly to strengthen my son's development within the game. I would recommend Coach J, to anyone of all ages who would like to sharpen their skills within the game of basketball or just becoming a better overall athlete.

Coach Jay is really passionate about basketball. Also, he has the patience, knowledge, and understanding of how develop and mold the talent of the player. One month ago, my daughter detested the sport and had no skills. Since working with coach Jay, she is developing as a player and starting to enjoy playing. I highly recommend Jay as a coach for anyone.

I love watching my son shoot now since he has been working with Coach J. I think he is square with the goal and he is more effective in triple threat. I drive one hour away to train with Coach J. He is the best in Louisiana.
