More About Coach Avery

I've coached camps at the University of Indianapolis and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside during the years of 2012 and 2015. I've also worked with the Milwaukee Rebels on the aau circuit in the summer of 2016. I've coached kids at the Chicago Bulls/Soxs academy during the summer of 2016 as well, working with kids from 5 to 14 years of age. In October of 2017 I started working for a program called Hoopsphere where I trained and coached for a year. I coached a total of 7 teams during that time, winning two championships.

All CCAC honorable mentions, 2017 (18 pts, 4 ast, 3 reb)
Competed in the GLVC (top D2 conference in the nation), 2012-2015
2016 Team Captain, IUSB
Camp coach, St. Joseph High School, 2012-15
For my college career highlights, there is a link I can send if interested.

Vertical increase- box jumps, squat hops, calf raises, step ups, burnouts

Ball handling- stationary pounding (knee, waist, shoulders level), double pounding ball handling (windshields, alternate, finger tip). One and two ball handling on the move.

Shots off screens- correcting footwork. Being able to step with both feet to start your shooting motion. V-cut (setting the defender up to come off screens), working on body control while getting bumped before taking shots. Shots off flare screens.

Shots off the dribble- Going to the right and left hand pull up shots. Step-back shots for more advanced players. Moves (in and out, between the legs, behind the back), change of speeds. Floaters (or push shot)

Footwork- jab stepping without traveling, curling off screens, flare screen footwork, up and under, pro hops and jump stops.

Drills coming off screen and roll action- big men hedging, splitting screens, defender going under the screen

Resistant bands workouts for more advanced players. two ball handling drills, catch and rip through drills, ladders, etc.

Depending on your skill level, these are just a range of drills that can be done.

I would encourage group training as well. Being able to immediately incorporate the skills recently learned through competition is beneficial. Sometimes a player will learn techniques and forget them when they go play on their own. In group training there will always be drills at the lather part of workout where you can work on moves against a defender rather than air. Faster muscle memory.

My 10 year old kid plays on two teams, and attends private lessons with Avery.

We’ve had quite a few coaches. Most coaches will only watch a few shots, give quick textbook suggestions, or just punish the kids with running drills until they make layups.

Instead, Avery maintains an acute awareness of my kids individual progress. Avery quickly recognizes the knots in my kids technique, and takes the time to thoroughly work them out. A few examples that stand out in my mind are the progress my kid has made in left handed layups, learning to initiate contact as an offensive tool, and the detail Avery has added to his free throw shooting posture and form.

We look forward to continuing to work with Avery!

My son, who just turned 7, started to train with Avery in July when he was 6.5 years old. We have trained with him for almost 50 sessions right now. I highly recommend Avery to anyone. No matter what is the player's level on Basketball skills, s/he can always learn a lot from Avery.

First of all, Avery is very energetic and motivational. He is really passionate about coaching kids. Passion does matter a lot. Kid can really feel the passion and be influenced. Avery is strict with training. If my son doesn't do the drill right, he will ask him to redo it all over again. He won't let any mistakes slip. But at the same time, he is so motivational that his energy and encouragement really encourage the kid to try one more time, and another time. Sometimes I can see my son is on the edge of giving up. But Avery really managed to push him and encourage him to keep going until meeting the goal. My son loves the challenges Avery gave him. He is exhausted sometimes, but he feel accomplishment and progress afterwards.

Second, Avery is GREAT on teaching drills. A good teacher is not who knows the most knowledge, but the one who knows how to explain in concise and plain language so that kids can easily understand and truly learn. Avery really has the talent of teaching. He truly understand kids' psychology and their way of learning. Because of his effective teaching, my son has learned a lot of drills. He also always correct kids if their drill is incorrect. His funny way of teaching make kids laugh and eager to learn.

Third, Avery value hard work and toughness a lot. He not only teaches my son drill skills, but also the spirit of sports. I trust him as a very good role model for my son. There were some times that he even taught life lessons to my son. I really appreciate it!

Fourth, Avery is very professional. He always shows on time, ready and eager to teach. He is caring, good at communication, respectful and detail oriented.

My son didn't have good experience on learning basketball before. He quitted basketball class in the past because he felt bored. But since day one he was trained with Avery, he immediately fell in love with basketball. He counts down days until his training day. He looks forward to training everyday. He was eager to practice what he learnt from Avery on his own. Basketball becomes his most favorite sport! Thank you Avery!

My son has been training with Coach Avery for 8 months. Avery is the BEST coach we have met so far, even better than coaches who have played NBA before.

Coach Avery has very sharp eyes that he can quickly identify the problems of the players. Then he would mimic what you did wrong AND do a correct demo. This helped a lot for my son. Most of time, he would quickly get it and improve.

Avery also has a very positive attitude. He can always encourage the players to work hard. When the players struggle, he can cheer them up. He would also make the training fun. My son always enjoys the trainings.

Coach Avery believes in efforts and hard working. I can see his professionalism and decency through my interactions with him. I believe part of this came from his college education and college basketball experiences. He is a good role model for young kids.

Coach Avery is a great basketball trainer! My 14 year old son has been doing private workouts with Avery for multiple months. He is professional, punctual and focused on helping my son reach that next level in his basketball development. Avery provides a tailored training plan every week, but will incorporate any suggestions and feedback we have. My son leaves workouts feeling super confident in his game, and wanting more... Avery knows the game, and how to teach it to youth. He was a former college player, and knows what it takes to become an elite athlete. I completely trust him, his basketball knowledge and skills he's imparting on my son.

I cannot say enough great things about Avery and would highly recommend him for anyone looking to improve/train in basketball.

My son is really enjoying working with Coach Avery. He is very punctual and has many good drills. We look forward to continue working with him.

Coach Avery has great energy! He is dedicated to a mission: helping young players to improve their game.
Sincere and professional!
Thank you

Just finished a great training session with coach Avery. I’ll definitely recommend anyone who is looking to improve their all around game. Coach Avery created a plan that works for me, his knowledge and patience helped me correct some of the hitches in my footwork and shot. I noticed the improvements immediately. Look forward to more sessions in the future!

Coach Avery pushes me to do better and he cares for his clients and makes sure that they improve
Avery has been coaching me since this July. We did individual training sessions and team drills together. He is very instructive for me and informative about basketball training, from fundamental ball handling, shooting drills to advanced combo moves. He didn't just show the moves but also tell me the reason behind those and which detail in my demonstrations goes wrong to make it effective. He is a friendly, funny, and passionate guy to me. You can feel his energy in what he's doing and I enjoy training with him a lot.
Coach Avery has been coaching my child since the last 6 months. I see tremendous improvement in my child's shooting / dribbling and passing skills. He is more confident now as he is able to contribute to his teams success. Coach Avery is very approachable and comfortable to work with. He has motivated my child to do better by improving on his weak areas. Overall we are very happy with coach Avery.
