More About Coach Akeem
I have extensive experience coaching at the high school level and training defensive linemen to refine their craft through position-specific drills, emphasizing movement efficiency, hand-fighting techniques, and footwork precision. My training programs are designed not only to improve physical performance but also to instill a never-quit mentality and the discipline needed to succeed at any level. I focus on blending technical skill development with mental resilience, ensuring athletes are prepared to meet challenges head-on and perform at their absolute best. My passion lies in mentoring and helping athletes reach their full potential, both on the field and in life. Certifications from Issa and also 10 years plus of NFL experience.
In high school, I earned All-State honors as a dominant defensive tackle. At the University of Illinois, I started 38 consecutive games, was a key contributor to the defensive line, and earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 2012 after recording 72 tackles that season. I was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft, launching a 10+ year professional career. In the NFL, I played in 115+ games, recorded 10.5 sacks, 200+ tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and 4 fumble recoveries, contributing to multiple teams with my consistency and durability.
Off the field, I’m passionate about giving back, hosting annual youth football camps in my hometown to mentor and train young athletes. These camps focus on skill development, teamwork, and building confidence, showing my commitment to uplifting the next generation.
A typical session begins with a dynamic warm-up to stretch and prepare the body, ensuring the athlete is loose and ready for activity. We then move into footwork drills on the ladder to improve agility, quickness, and coordination. If the athlete is capable, we incorporate sled walks to build leg strength and power.
Next, we focus on change-of-direction drills, such as the 4-cone and star drills, to enhance reaction time, explosiveness, and body control. Conditioning is included to build endurance and mental toughness, and we wrap up with a cool-down stretch to aid recovery and flexibility.
Hydration breaks are built in throughout, and sessions are tailored to the athlete’s specific needs, ensuring constant progression and development. No two sessions are the same, keeping the training dynamic and engaging.
