More About Coach William
William Clay, founder and director of operations for Shining Star Hoops Basketball Academy, has a 15 year commitment to basketball excellence. Clay has conducted over 25 basketball clinics and led more than 1,500 youths through these programs. These summer clinics were held at various university campuses including The University of Texas and Texas A&M University.
William Clay attended high school at Bryan High School in Bryan, TX where he was a four year Letterman on the varsity team. As a senior during the ’95-’96 season, Clay set a district and region wide record (which still stands) for the most three-pointers a single season –146. He finished 4th among greater Houston 5A players in scoring behind future University of Texas teammate Nnadubem Muoneke (24.7 ppg) and Texas A&M junior Jerald Brown (23.9 ppg). Clay was named 3rd team all-state by the Texas Sports Writers Association and was named honorable mention all-Greater Houston by the Houston Chronicle.
Clay earned a basketball scholarship and attended San Jacinto Junior College. He currently holds the school record for three-pointers made in a season (112 as a freshman) and in a single game (nine vs. Trinity Valley as a freshman). Clay averaged 15.9 ppg during his freshman year, while helping his team post a 36-1 record and advanced to the NJCAA national championship game. Four of his teammates, including Steve Francis, went on to earn Division I scholarships. He still holds the San Jacinto Junior college record of 205 three-pointers made in his two-year career.
Clay transferred to University of Texas in 1998 and developed into one of the top defensive stoppers in the Big 12 Conference. As a senior in 1999-2000, he was one of the starters in Texas’ three-guard set. He achieved the team’s Outstanding Defensive player award and earned the Jim Krivacs Free Throw Percentage award, given to the player on the Texas squad with the highest free throw percentage (.727).
His professional experience included playing in the CBA and earning CBA Rookie of the Year Award. Additionally, Clay’s experience extends to playing in Qatar/Dubai and Syria. Clay also earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from The University of Texas.

Coach Clay, First of all, I would like to thank you and the hard-working team you possess. In two weeks, my son David has showed vast improvements on the court. In one week, my 5 year old Dalyn has shown my motivation unlike I’ve ever seen out of him. I envision a long and rewarding relationship with the Shining Star Hoops Team.

-Gerald Green, NBA and NFL agent (Testimonial)
In the business of representing elite athletes, results are critical to an athlete's career and future! I have been engaged in the game for over 30 years as a player, father and agent. When I needed someone to prepare my clients for NBA pre-draft workouts, training camp or for a return to competitive basketball overseas; Will Clay prepared my clients mentally, physically and professionally. His knowledge of the game, skill and conditioning workouts are cutting edge and enable the athlete to perform at a high level.
-Sonya Graham, Houston Texas (Testimonial)
Hey William. I have been spreading the word about how awesome your camps are. My kids have played basketball for 5 years now, and I have seen more improvement, as well as, positive attitude and a confidence, that hasn't been so obvious previously, especially with Austin. So, big kudos to you and all your coaches, ya'll are the key to all of this having such a profound and positive affect on the kids. They are emulating the work/attitude ethic that you coaches are demonstrating every practice. Thank you so much. We are so grateful to have gotten this opportunity for our kid.
-Geraldine Williams, Tomball Texas (Testimonial)
I want to thank you for everything. You have been training my son, Sheldon, for over the past month. Sheldon's confidence is growing and his true talent has surfaced. Thank you for giving Sheldon the opportunity to work with you
-John Dean (Testimonial)
Will, I wanted to Thank You for the coaching you provided to our son(Jeremy) with his basketball game. Most of all you gave James the confidence a young player needs as they are developing. As a point guard James averaged 12 points a game. After two weeks with you James hit 22 points in his next game, an all time high. The first thing he wanted to do was call you. The drills, the pace, and the workouts gave him what he needed, confidence. James in now playing for an AAU team and is looking forward to getting even better. Thank you for making a difference in him as a young man and a basketball player.
-Greg Banfield (Testimonial)
My daughter Marissa Banfield has been training, and playing for Coach William Clay going on two years now. Marissa has been to several trainers since she was 8 years old. Coach Clay has been the best and most productive trainer by far, Marissa has blossomed under Coach Clay, she is now considered one of the top 8th grade girls by ranking services, and other teams. We contribute this to Coach Clay. Coach Clay teaches elite level drills, for elite players, he really knows how to get through, to push Marissa to the next level. Through his training and coaching of her select team, we have seen tremendous improvement, in Marissa’s skill level, as well as her confidence. Marissa responds very well to Coach Clay. His knowledge of the game, and his abilities to coach and teach the game of basketball, has been way beyond our expectations in an elite trainer for Marissa. I would highly recommend Coach Clay to anyone as a trainer and as a coach.
-Lisa Garrett, Parent (Testimonial)
My daughter Brooke McCarty has been training with William Clay for about 2 years. Coach Clay teaches elite level drills and also does weight training. Brooke has been very consistent with ther outside shot and has gotten much stronger. My daughter is only 5'3' so that speaks a lot for her size. Coach Clay is getting her ready to play Division 1 basketball. Brooke responds to him well and is always up for a challenge. His abiltiy to challenge her at this level is really good because it is only getting her ready for the college level. Coach Clay knowledge of the game and his abilities to coach and teach the game of basketball has gotten him ready to coach or train at the college level. He also has a love for the game that you cannot teach. Brooke is now a McDonald All-American and will be participating in Chicago in April.
