More About Coach Whitney

I just graduated in May of 2017 from the University of Texas at Tyler with a bachelors degree in Kinesiology. I was on the Track and Field team for all four years of my college career, in which I excelled greatly. I spent those four years not only competing, but learning from my coach on both the sprints side, as well as the throws. I have assisted in coaching our collegiate throws athletes during the last two years of my college career, and intend on making that my career in my post-collegiate life. I am working on obtaining my CSCS (certified strength and conditioning specialist), and am currently certified in Strength and Conditioning through USTFCCCA. As of September 2017, I became an Assistant Track & Field Coach and the Track & Field Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Texas at Tyler, and I love every second of my job. I am passionate about Track & Field and am eager to share my passion with young athletes.

During my four years at UT Tyler, I competed in the hammer throw, discus, shot-put, and indoor weight throw. I participated in four indoor seasons in the weight throw, where I earned 3 All-American awards, an All-Region award,NCAA National Athlete of the Week, and a National Championship. I also participated in four outdoor seasons with the hammer throw, discus, and shot-put; During that time, I excelled most in the Hammer Throw, in which I earned 4 All-American awards, 3 All-Region Awards, and two National Championships, as well as setting the National Record for Division III. During my collegiate career, I obtained a sum of 7 All-American Awards, 3 National Championship Titles, and a National Record. I am currently ranked 93rd in the world for the hammer throw, and am in the top 20 in the Nation. I intend on competing professionally, and have my sites set on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

During a session with me, we will first go through a warm-up in order to increase the athlete's core temperature and prepare the body for what we are about to do. The warm-up will be moderate, and made to fit the athlete's specific needs. Once warm, I will observe where the athlete is in their event. For example, if I am working with a discus thrower, for the first practice, I will have the athlete show me how they warm-up their body and arms, and I will have them take a few full throws before stepping in to correct things in order to get a good feel for what level they are at. Sessions will be relaxed, and questions will be welcomed, but I will also push the athlete to give me 100% effort and focus the entire time. I will offer my email and phone number, and will also take video recordings in order to better analyze the throw, and compare to later sessions. I have plenty of different drills and games in mind for each event, in order to keep practices fun, because after all, that is the most important thing to me. My coach always wanted me to have fun with my event, even at practice, and I want to have that same mindset for my athletes. If you don’t love what you do, you won’t be successful.
