More About Coach Thomas
Over the past 25+ years I have coached and trained many student athletes from County Select-Lee District; Boys Assistant Varsity Coach positions at Edison HS; Archbishop Carroll HS; McLean HS and a stint as Freshmen Head Coach at Bishop Ireton HS; 7 years as Head Coach Fairfax Stars Boys AAU and currently past 8 years my program Alexandria Kings Basketball Association (AAU/Exposure). Players have gone on to play professionally overseas; played at all levels D1 - DIII, JUCO. I train athletes from September - August some play under the Alexandria Kings umbrella and others do not.
I played collegiately at Howard University in Washington, DC, and still love to play the game today. Coaching the game allows me to teach our young people the importance of fundamentals, hard work, goal-setting, and respect for the game. It is very satisfying watching the young people I have had an opportunity to coach and rewards they are achieving as good players and outstanding citizens. I am looking forward to great things from our Alexandria Kings and Alexandria Lady Monarchs AAU/ YBOA/Exposure Basketball Program. For this is an opportunity for these selected young people to play spirited basketball, increase their knowledge of the game, enhance their skill level, and impress teammates and opponents with their tenacity and hard work.
A typical workout consists of 5 laps with a ball at 50/50 speed to get the cardio up; center court stretching; dribbling drills full and half court with-without props; full court right/left hand layup drill; elbow to elbow jump shots; free throw shooting and assessment - in order to establish a consistent routine; triple threat shooting moves; pro-split move with props; S-curl shots around chairs; medicine ball routine and shots; defensive slide instruction (knickerbocker defensive drill if group training); full court defensive slides; my diamond drill (similar to Mikan drill - must attend to see); 7 shot around the world from mid or 3 point range depending on client's skill level and return; large group will shoot 49 -3's.
