More About Coach Damien

I have mentored a wide range of kids, girls and boys of all ages. I have volunteered at multiple basketball summer camps where I was able to work with large and small groups on individual skills and all around improvement. Through these experiences I've developed a vast understanding of how to reach and impact youth effectively and in a fun way! I am currently the head coach of the 5th & 6th grade boys and assistant coach on the Providence Christian Academy Men's Varsity basketball staff located in Murfreesboro, TN. I also coach with the Upward Stars AAU program.

I played 4 years of college basketball at Averett University and was a captain my last 3 years. I helped lead my team to 4 Conference Championships and 3 NCAA Division III Tournaments. I was able to earn Pre-Season All-American honors in 2007 from Sporting News and Street & Smith. One year in college I was named to the Conference All-Tournament Team and the next year I was the Conference Tournament MVP. Member of the All-Time Leading Rebounders at Averett and a member of the 1,000 Career Points Club. Selected as Euroleague Tournament All-Star Game MVP. I was blessed enough to play professional basketball overseas in the United Kingdom, China and most recently Japan.

First of all, one of the reasons basketball was created was to be a game. So I encourage my trainees to have fun & work hard! In a typical session, I would first assess the level of the athlete I am working with. I would then take the player from the point they are and continue to push and focus on their technique and fundamentals. We will start with a warm-up, then work on a specific skill. Once that skill has been refined, we will play a game or do a drill that works that skill along with other skills we have been working on. It's all about making progress not perfection!

This week my boys had a basketball camp in our driveway led by our friend Damien Brown. The boys loved it when he started by showing them his four championship rings from college and his 1,000 point scoring trophy. Once he told them that he played professional basketball overseas, they were all in and excited! I knew the boys would have a great time, but I had no idea how much they would love it. It’s all they talked about all week. In fact, I was so impressed with Damien that I grabbed my camera and filmed their last session. Campbell and I have had a blast editing together this “highlight reel” tonight. Damien even gave my wife and I a printed “summary” of all he taught the boys and the areas that they can keep working on. He’s great with kids and really knows his stuff!
