More About Coach Tarmo
After competing in high school (Estonia) and college (US) in track and field, I began working as an assistant coach for TAMUK track and field team from 2006 till 2008, while keeping competing at international level. 2006 fall I was asked to temporarily take over the responsibilities of the head cross country and track & field coach due to unexpected circumstances. The team consisted of 30+ athletes. After the new head coach took over the position, I kept working mainly with sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. Part of my job was also to run and/or officiate local high school and collegiate track meets.
After graduating in 2008 with MSc I worked for a year as a personal trainer and educated myself in strength and conditioning, corrective and preventive training. My clients ranged from young baseball players to US army soldiers to novice marathon runners. I am very proud of helping my former boss and his wife to train for their first ever half-marathon and a full marathon.
In 2010 I started a doctorate degree in Kinesiology and worked as a s&c coach for University of Tartu basketball team (19 national championship titles). Also I was training hurdlers and pole vaulters (2 national champions).
In 2011 and 2012 I continued my doctorate studies while working as a S&C coach for the basketball team and working with hurdlers and pole vaulters (3 national champions and 2 national team representatives).
In 2012 I moved to Plano (TX) and continued training athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
I had more than 10 years of international level competing experience and was coached by one of the best hurdle coaches in Europe. I competed in the 110 hurdles at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Before college I competed mostly in decathlon, but when I got to college I started to specialize in 110 hurdles, short sprints and relays. What I lacked in talent I made up with hard work and willpower.
NCAA division II outdoor champion (110 hurdles, 13.67 s), 2004. NCAA 7 time All-American.
Represented Estonia in Athens, 2004 Olympic Games (110 hurdles, 13.77 s), 2004
Represented Estonia in Osaka, World Championships (110 hurdles), 2007
Represented Estonia in European Championships (110 hurdles), 2006
Represented Estonia in European Indoor Championships in Genth (60 hurdles), 2000
National (Estonia) record holder in 110mH 13.62 sec, 110mH ind. 14.18 sec., 60mH ind. 7.76 sec, 55mH ind. 7.28 sec.
In short, it varies. I like to use a wide array of drills and methods, as well as a combination of scientific literature and real world experience. Athletes will go through general and sport specific screening and testing so that I can match the best program for their level of physical and technical preparedness. I believe that smart work is the best recipe for a long term success.
