More About Coach Steven
I have been playing and coaching football in some capacity for more than 22 years. I played and graduated from St Joe's Prep High School and spent most of my coaching career there. I was recruited last spring to be the defensive coordinator/off-season strength and conditioning coach for Prep Charter High School in South Philly. After meeting my new team in early last spring, I quickly realized their dire need to learn the fundamentals of football, to develop their skills and to hone their individual athleticism. I personally designed and implemented the program for maximal results and for the overall success of the team. My training program was very well received by the boys. It was reflected by their daily attendance. I trained approximately 22 players per day on average and of those 22, five of them reached our "1,000 Pound Club" with three lifts consisting of bench press, squats and power cleans. Our hard work and commitment was definitely paying off. In fact, our wide receiver, Curran Simmons, who last season had zero catches, now at six games into this season, has 35 catches and 698 yards which is currently the second most receiving yards in the state of Pennsylvania. He also leads the city of Philadelphia with receiving yards and is only 117 yards away from breaking the all-time public league receiving record with half the season still remaining. My team is currently 5-1 and we are destined for continued greatness in the future.
I am very proud of my accomplishments as coach and trainer. I strive to continue my father's Philadelphia high school football coaching legacy where he achieved his hundredth win at St. Joe's Prep High School while battling stage 4 head and neck cancer.
I am originally from Southwest Philly but have resided in South Jersey for many years now. I would like to expand my career by sharing my coaching, training and leadership skills with individual athletes in the Philadelphia and South Jersey areas. My workouts are designed for the specific and individual needs of each athlete. My background in training is through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM); one of the most prestigious personal trainer accrediting agencies. I have over ten years of personal training experience with a passion for it that parallels coaching. Few skills are "natural," and fortunetaly or unfortunately, one must hone their skills to become proficient . This is where my expertise comes in to facilitate the best results!
As the son of a high school football coach, it was pretty much predetermined that I would not only play the sport, but that I would start at a fairly young. So, inevitably, I started playing when I was in second grade at age 8, playing on a team of fourth graders. I continued to play through my senior year of high school. In my senior year, I was rewarded for my many accomplishments by being named Team Captain. At the end of the season my accolades were considerable. I was awarded Team Defensive MVP, 1st Team All-Catholic Honors, Second Team-All City Honors and I was privileged to play in the Philadelphia Catholic versus Public League City All-Star Team. I also received the prestigious Maxwell Award which was given out personally by Ron Jawarski. I am most proud of this honor out of all of my football career accomplishments because I shared it with only twelve other elite players in the Greater Philadelphia area.
Dependent on the athlete, I integrate my training styles accordingly. I always start off with a combination of dynamic and static stretching, focusing on the primary muscles to be trained. I also incorporate rotational, stability and mobility exercises to keep the joints loose and mobile. I then dedicate a portion of the session to cardiovascular and strength training which will progress as we advance through our training together. Next, we will spend significant time on the fundamentals of football. I start from the ground up and progress according to the client's level of development. I also integrate specific positional drills into the session. Last, we will end with some additional stretching while discussing our next session so that our time together can be maximized.

Coach Steve is a fantastic coach! My son is geting a foundation in football, learning the correct way to play the game as well as learning about the right way and wrong way to work out for core and strength training. Coach Steve started at the beginning and connected with my son and has taken the time to work with him on all aspects of the game. My son has already shown improvement and is excited and eager to learn the game of football. I would recommend Coach Steve for any player regardless of the players knowledge of the game to help them improve their game at any level.
Chris Martin (Testimonial)
Credit to Coach Steven from Chris Martin; St. Joe's Prep QB Article published 10/10/2013 St. Joe’s Prep’s Chris Martin From High School Football Frenzy La Salle, St. Joe's Prep Philadelphia, PA (CBS) — There’s going to be another quarterback playing in the huge Catholic League Class AAAA showdown Friday at 7 p.m. when La Salle hosts arch rival St. Joe’s Prep at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. While most eyes will be on highly touted La Salle junior quarterback Kyle Shurmur, the Prep’s Chris Martin will quietly go about his business, driving the Hawks up the field as he usually does, seeing the field in a slow-moving way and making it absolutely frustrating for the Explorers’ defense to stop him. Martin doesn’t have those glitzy, robust numbers that will bowl anyone over. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound senior is 55-for-83, for 698 yards with seven touchdowns with 1 interception, according to TedSilary.com. Above everything else, though, Martin just wins. In his two years as a starter, he’s directed the Hawks to a 14-2 overall record. Chris accepts his limitations and understands what he does well and what he doesn’t do well; he understands our offense better than anyone,” Hawks’ coach Gabe Infante said. “Chris is a real heady player and he knows what we want to accomplish. He’s poised. That’s probably the best thing I can say about him. I’m a pain in the ass at practice, I really am. I have 8,000 things I’ll throw at him, and nothing rattles Chris. It’s not in his personality to get rattled. He’s very even keeled. I’ve seen him get fired up, but overall, he’s very consistent. He’s the perfect guy to run our offense. We are asking Chris to do more. He’s a weapon. Martin has found himself in this position almost by happenstance. He never quarterbacked until high school—and that really didn’t evolve until one time his freshman year during the halftime of a varsity game, Martin was throwing passes to then Prep freshman coach Steve Wagner. He did spot duty in the wildcat freshman year and was the Prep’s starting junior varsity quarterback by his sophomore season. I remember Coach Wagner liked my arm,” recalled Martin, an all-Catholic League third baseman for Preps’ baseball team. “I always knew I could throw from baseball, and my dadalways suggested I try quarterback. I didn’t think I could take a snap under center because I was afraid of fumbling. This isn’t where I thought I would be freshman year. He is now. His diligence toward improving includes staying an extra hour after Wednesday practices to go over protection schemes with the Hawks’ offensive line coach. Martin wants to erase the 28-27 loss to La Salle in last year’s Catholic League playoffs that ousted the Hawks from the state playoffs. Martin remembers that game well. There are some plays he would like to have back and he’s looking to remedy that year long wait Friday night. I could have played better in the playoff game against La Salle last year; we all felt pretty confident going into that game,” Martin said. “I think I learned there were definitely some run plays I could have checked out of and made better decisions with the ball. I could have managed the offense a lot better. We thought there were opportunities to take shots down field, which we did. But there were times when we could have extended drives. I feel more in control of the game.
