To a man, I have never met anyone obsessed with how the body and its components work to swing as simple a tool as a baseball bat. I realized right away that to advance the information and facts in any profession or hobby that it takes someone like Steve, with this sense of a controlled obsession to get things right. I went into this encounter with an open mind, as I do with all of my searches, and came away with a belief and a high level of understanding of how to use the body to swing a bat more efficiently. Steve believes you have to strive to achieve three things: optimal swing quickness, efficient swing path and maximum bat speed. Three simple things that people have argued over for years, and will continue to for many more. Steve’s unprecedented knowledge and research of the mechanics of an efficient swing, made it very easy for me to understand the characteristics involved in achieving an optimum swing. He made it very simple to understand and see the components of the body and how these components affect one another. Swinging a bat is a very simple action; swinging a bat efficiently is a very complex thing. Steve, and in my opinion only Steve, has unbelievable knowledge of all components of the swing and the characteristics of one. He is also the only one, that I have observed, who has the ability to simplify the complexity of the swing into terms understandable to anyone willing to learn and get better. As a high school coach and over the course of meeting Steve 8 years ago, we have implemented many of Steve’s knowledge, drills and deliberative practice in executing our hitting practices. Over the past 3 years (the BBCOR era) we have hit 49/36/39 home runs as a team with all kids contributing to these numbers. We have hit .374 as a team over these 3 years. We are a 2A school, do not cut players due to lack of numbers, and have sent 31 players to the next level over the past 8 years. Although impossible to figure out the exact amount of our success that could be attributed to Steve (or anyone else for that matter), I assure you that these numbers and our hitting as a whole would not be what it is, or anywhere close, without the many encounters I/we have had with Steve Englishbey. Because of this I repeat, thank God I am willing to learn, and wanting to progress my knowledge of baseball as a coach. I can only hope that Steve continues down this path of obsession.

I have been doing hitting instruction for over 40 years in the Richmond, Virginia area. After meeting up with Steve some 10 or so years ago, my instruction has gone to a much higher level. The hitting concepts Steve teaches have not only been an invaluable asset to my understanding of how hitter’s optimally swing a bat but also applies drills and motor learning principles that demonstrate how your players can feel the proper movement and acquire those skills. There are many “hitting gurus” out there and they all have their idea about what constitutes an efficient swing…heck I have most of their programs too….however, without a doubt I have found Steve’s material to be head and shoulders above the other programs that I have studied in the past. We have been using these concepts for the last 8 years and attribute them to the success of our high school program here in Virginia. We have only been open for 10 years but after losing in the state AAA championship game in 2009 we were fortunate enough to breakthrough and win the title this past spring. What is important to note is that our 2009 team had ridiculous offensive numbers with the old “hot” bats that were in use. This past season, with the BBCOR bats, our offensive production was only a few points lower in team batting average and home runs, but our run production and strike outs were actually lower. If you are a student of the game and want to improve your understanding of how elite hitter’s actually do what they do, you should give Steve’s program a good look. I have been involved in baseball all my life and was blessed with the talent and opportunity to play at a very high level.
