More About Coach Stacey
I have been studying Martial Arts for 29 years. I started in Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do at age 7, at age 21 I began the study of Pak Hok Pai (White Crane Kung Fu) and Moy Fa Tong Long (Plum Blossom Praying Mantis). In the time I have been studying White Crane and Praying Mantis I also studied Japanese Ju Jitsu for about 4 months as well as Ba Gua. I do self study/learning on/in Tai Chi.
Upon obtaining 1st Duan White Sash (1st Degree Black Belt) Sifu level on March 6 2004, I have assisted my Si-Gung (master/sifu/teacher) in teaching classes. Both beginners and advanced.
Pak Hok Pai (White Crane Kung Fu) – 4th Duan Pak Da Sifu
(4th Degree Black Belt) – 16 yrs
Moy Fa Tong Long (Plum Blossom Praying Mantis) – 1st Duan Sifu
(1st Degree Black Belt) – 16 yrs
Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do – 3rd Gup Blue Belt – 13 yrs
Ba Gua
Tai Chi – self study
Japanese Ju Jitsu – Yellow Belt – 4 months
I require an essay on why you want to study Martial Arts, how you got interested in Martial Arts and what you want to get from the study/practice. This is as much for you as it is for me.
I teach in the traditional manner in which I was taught, everyone regardless of age, experience or capability starts with basics. Stances and footwork are first and foremost, then the learning of blocks, then strikes (hand (i.e. punches etc.) and feet (i.e. kicks). I also start with Ba Duan Jin (8 section brocade) qigong (energy work) to build up the body and energy for practice/study in the arts.
Once the basics are grasped the first empty hand form is started.
After the first 4 empty hand forms are learned, weapon forms begin to be taught/learned.
There are a total of 18 empty hand forms and a total of 23 weapon forms in the Pak Hok Pai system that I teach.
Every session will start with stretching (once you learn the stretches you can do them at home and come stretched if you want) and balance exercises. After that forms work. I teach applications to the forms as I teach the forms as it helps to learn and understand the forms. Lessons/sessions will vary some from one to the next, some might be heavy forms work, some might be heavy application work. Some may be heavy reaction training and others might be heavy stance work.
I also teach Chi Sau (Sticking Hands) from the Praying Mantis.
I do assign home-work, i.e. standing in Horse Stance and Single Leg Crane stance daily for a set time each day in between lessons/sessions. As well as doing Ba Duan Jin (8 section brocade) daily. Also to practice forms once you have them down at least once a day in between lessons/sessions. The more you practice and harder you work the faster/better you will learn and the more you will get from the study. What you put in is what you get out.
I fully believe in the life-long benefits of studying martial arts. Through the study you gain: self-confidence; improved coordination; balance; focus; determination; the ability to face challenges with a calm, focused mind/attitude; self-discipline; improved awareness; improved health; increased flexibility; increased strength; the ability to defend oneself or others weaker or unable to defend themselves and an improved social awareness.
