More About Coach Roberto
I have over 5 years of experience coaching youth basketball, working with players from elementary school through middle and high school levels. Throughout my coaching career, I’ve focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game while also helping players build confidence, discipline, and a strong work ethic.
In addition to coaching, I currently serve on the board for my Catholic school basketball program, where I help oversee player development and contribute to the growth of the program as a whole. My experience includes not only coaching teams but also providing individualized training, allowing me to tailor skill development to each athlete’s needs.
I’ve had the opportunity to be part of championship-winning teams, giving me valuable insight into what it takes to compete and succeed at a high level. I’ve also continued to invest in my development as a coach by attending multiple coaching clinics, including the USA Youth Basketball Academy, where I’ve learned modern training techniques and best practices for developing young athletes.
My goal is to create a positive, high-energy training environment where players can improve their skills, understand the game, and reach their full potential both on and off the court.
I’ve been playing basketball for over 30 years, developing a deep understanding of the game through both competitive play and years of experience on the court. I was a 3-year varsity player at St. Edmund Prep High School, where I had a very successful high school career.
During my senior season, I earned All-Division honors and was selected as an All-Tournament player in the Aviator Holiday Tournament. I also set the school’s single-season record for three-pointers made, showcasing my strength as a perimeter shooter and offensive contributor.
Following high school, I earned a scholarship to play basketball at Baruch College. Unfortunately, due to injury, I was unable to compete at the collegiate level. While that was a setback, it ultimately fueled my passion for coaching and player development, allowing me to pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of athletes.
A typical session with me is a high-energy, structured 1-hour workout designed to maximize skill development and game performance. Each session is tailored to the athlete’s age, skill level, and goals, but always focuses on building a strong foundation while pushing players to improve.
We start with ball handling to develop control, confidence, and the ability to handle pressure. From there, we move into creating a shot—working on moves off the dribble, footwork, and separation techniques that translate directly into game situations.
A big emphasis is placed on proper shooting technique and form, making sure players understand mechanics, consistency, and repetition so they can become reliable scorers. We also focus on finishing at the rim, including different layup variations, body control, and finishing through contact.
In addition, sessions include agility and stamina work to improve quickness, conditioning, and overall athletic performance. Throughout the workout, I incorporate basketball IQ by teaching players how to read defenses, make smart decisions, and understand spacing and timing.
My goal is to create a challenging but positive environment where athletes not only improve their skills, but also gain confidence and a better understanding of the game.
