More About Coach Preston
My experience as an undersized SEC athlete, and an intimate
knowledge of teaching has given me the unique ability to convey messages to
athletes and coaches. I have served students and athletes at Blythewood High School
since 2005, I have coached several players who have went on to play at the next level, especially Defensive Lineman which is my specialty.
Despite not playing organized football until 9th grade because of his weight,
Preston led the nation’s winningest coach John Mckissick greenwave to the
schools last state championship. His natural talent and nose for the ball garnered
him a selection to the Shrine bowl and a nomination as the South Carolina’s
Defensive player of the year. Lacking traditional SEC size, Preston was highly
recruited by D1 universities all over the country, but only offered by a few.
Believing that he was able to play in the SEC Preston accepted the challenge of
being part of a culture change at the University of South Carolina. Preston was
recruited by Charlie Strong to play nose guard in his exotic new 3-3-5 defense.
Using a redshirt year to grow and develop his natural skills allowed. Known as
a “hustle” guy, Preston depended on extraordinary effort claw his way into two
deep rotation as an “undersized” nose guard playing behind All-Sec lineman
Langston Moore. His next two years at South Carolina were spent earning a
starting position despite not being a “typical” SEC lineman according to coach
Holtz. Preston’s path to success was abruptly interrupted when he suffered a
what doctors call the “ABC” injury tearing his acl, mcl, pcl and meniscus. Faced
with a potentially career ending injury, Preston again used a positive attitude to
accept the challenge of a long and arduous rehab. With his signature quickness
and speed now severely limited Preston, still undersized, was forced to rely on his
attention to technique to once again gain a starting position. A four year varsity
letterman and Co-captain Preston continuously defied the odds to be successful
as a student athlete.
