More About Coach Paige

I have worked many camps at the high school level through the teams I played on. The camps we hosted in high school were a week long and 3 hours per day. The elite camp we did at my college was one full day of various drills and scrimmaging with a small group of recruits. I have individually trained many of my teammates and that was a great opportunity for me to get used to planning and executing sessions, making adjustments on the fly, and explaining the details of a skill in a digestible manner. I had been training my teammates since I was a freshman in college, working with all different positions.

I played at a Division III school in Oregon, where I started most of my career at point guard. We were a part of the Northwest Conference, which included schools in the Portland area and moving north to Washington as far as Spokane. My freshman year I led the conference in assist to turnover ratio. I didn’t make the all conference team, but I was an effective leader for my team and helped out my younger teammates as much as I could.

This will depend on the client and what their goals are, but in general each session will have a prime, technique, application, and compete/conditioning section. Prime is doing a warm up that gets the athlete moving. This could include ball handling, a shooting drill, or something that’s not even related to basketball such as spikeball to foster engagement and fun. I will also apply strength and conditioning principles to help activate relevant muscle groups and movement patterns that are relevant to basketball and what we’re doing that day. Then I’ll take time to break down a technique into parts. After the athlete has gotten the technique down, we practice it in a more game-like situation where I will play defense or put constraints on the drill to make it harder. At the end I like to challenge the athlete to execute various skills under fatigue.
