More About Coach Oscar

Credentials/Certifications:
B.S. in Kinesiology
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)

My experience as a strength and conditioning coach include working with athletes of all ages from 10 to professional level.
I currently work part-time at the Michael Johnson Performance Center and have worked at the University of North Texas for the past 2 years. My background includes working with track & field, soccer, tennis, golf, volleyball, and football. However, I have the science background and knowledge to work with any athlete from any sport. I believe training should be fun but should also be all business when actually working. My passion for developing and helping my athletes get better often exceeds my athletes' own passion and desire, which means I take what I do seriously and I really love what I do. I will not waste your time!

I have played sports all throughout my youth through high school until I joined the military. I grew up in a very competitive football town of Killeen, Texas where my school was ranked through all the years that I attended. I like to think I had a lot to do with that. Other sports that I participated in include baseball, track and boxing. I am no stranger to competition and understand the hard work that it takes to reach the next level. Talent alone is not enough.

Training Philosophy:
Injury Prevention - This is my number one priority and is accomplished by teaching proper form, technique, movement mechanics and the use of pre-habilitation exercises
Enhancement of Sport Performance - Aside from injury prevention the overall purpose for training is to improve athletic performance by developing and maximizing an athlete's potential. Focus of the training program includes, but is not limited to, focus on movement patterns rather than individual muscles, developing and enhancing strength and thereby power potential, emphasizing correction of muscle imbalances, improving strength and stability of the core, reiforcing and improving basic movement patterns and biomechanics, etc.
Specificity of Conditioning/Fuel System Training - Talent, strength, and power all mean nothing if the conditioning level cannot carry an athlete through their competition. Not only must fuel-system training be catered to the sport's needs, but also work-rest ratios during training to best mimic competition and ensure explosive performance during every play for the entire duration of the competition
Address Strength/Power Needs Specific to the Position/Sport - Though most athletes tend to have some similar basic training needs, every sport has its own requirements that must be addressed in training to optimize performance
Plan For Long-Term Success - It takes more than one off-season to reach our goals and maximize potential. I want all my athletes to be successful in anything they choose to do in the future. Training can help instill many important life skills and values, including discipline, perseverance, mental strength, teamwork, humility, leadership, along with good exercise and nutrition habits to live a long and healthy life
