More About Coach Natalie
I began coaching youth athletes well over 10 years ago during the summer season. Soon after graduating from Wofford College, I began as assistant girl's coach with local AAU programs in the DMV area. From there, I landed the Assistant Girls Varsity coaching position at Annapolis High School, where in 2 seasons we proudly achieved the girls' first and highest winning seasons! Following Annapolis, I was hired as the Recreation Advisor at the Potomac Job Corp Center in Washington, DC. At Job Corps I served as the Assistant Boy’s Varsity coach, as well as Head Girl’s Basketball head coach, where both Girl's and Boy's teams brought home the Job Corps Athletics Association National Championship in back-to-back seasons. My vocational experience has allowed me to work with a wide age range of athletes on various different levels of experience, spanning from ages 5 to 24 years old. After suffering injuries prior to and after the COVID-19 pandemic, I have taken time away from the game to fully recover and most recently began training 1-on-1 with private clients again.
I have been Heat Acclimatization and CPR/AED certified.
My athletic tenure began at the age of 11 with the Maryland Mystics AAU program, under former Georgetown University coach, Keith Brown. From 11U to 16U, my team and I competed in the regional tournament year after year, receiving third place or higher and earned Nationals invitations each year. We went on to compete in each tournament, receiving several silver and bronze medals, and placing lower no lower than the Sweet 16. Simultaneously, I attended one of the best girl’s basketball programs in the country at Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, MD, under the leadership of current Temple University Women’s coach, Diane Richardson. I served as a starter and co-captain in my Junior and Senior seasons where we continued regional and national rankings, landing at #3 and #6 in the country in consecutive seasons. As a senior, I was awarded MVP honors at the National Christian School Invitational tournament, following a victory over the #2 high school girl's program in the nation. From there I received a full Division 1 athletic scholarship to play at Wofford College, where I served as co-captain and started throughout my sophomore, junior, and senior seasons. Shortly after, I competed professionally in the Czech Republic, before returning to the states to attend graduate school.
I believe that client sessions should be personalized and tailored to the athletes’ needs and/or experience levels (i.e. more focus dedicated to weakness, however allotting time to build upon their existing strengths). Unlike typical skill and drills style trainings, I take pride in the craft aspect of the game! That is, not only mastering specific skills and moves, but being able to read when to use them in game-like situations, why you are using them, and recognizing what advantages or disadvantages you can create when used appropriately. Standard sessions always start with what I like to call “housekeeping” and everyday maintenance to keep touches sharp; which consists of ball handling and form shooting drills (one-handed; 2 balls and the same time/staggered; form shooting, etc.), followed by more a tailored plan of action such as situational awareness, positioning, getting open, attacking the basket, defeating traps, increasing shot percentage, mitigating errors, and so on. An example of this is a screen and roll drill that forces players to read the defense as they go (if the defender hedges versus if they switch, do you stop and shoot, pass to the roller, or attack the rim?) I like to finish the last few minutes of the session with a recap of what they've earned, what they did well, what they should continue working on, and what their goals are for next session. I believe this is a great way to get athletes to view training as not only physical skill building, but also giving them something to continue practicing outside of our individual sessions!
