More About Coach Mike
I have been a martial arts instructor for the past 15 years. I primarily teach Tang Soo Do and traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, though I have experience in several other styles as well (Bando, White Crane Chin-na, Arnis/Kali, Japanese Staff). I teach large classes and provide private lessons to both children and adults. I have mentored many students preparing for black belt over the years.
I have competed on the East Coast tournament circuit, and have won divisions in lightweight mens' fighting, one-step sparring, and traditional kata. I was also one of the youngest second-degree black belts in Tompkins Karate Association history at the age of 21.
My instruction is grounded in traditional martial arts practice. My teaching style is very flexible, but it generally involves some of the following components: a vigorous, total-body warm up; empty-hand drills focusing on technique and body coordination; pad work for speed and focus; targeted strength training for kicking; manipulation drills for weapons work; partner drills for jiu-jitsu and self defense; sparring and live practice for advanced practitioners.
Depending on your specific goals, we will select the training modality that is most appropriate.

Kumi S, student (Testimonial)
I would like to say two things about Mike. The first is that he is an amazing instructor to watch when he is fighting in that his reaction time is so fast it is like watching The Matrix movie for the first time. The second is that he is so down to earth to talk to that he is the best instructor one would ever want.
Pierre A, co-instructor (Testimonial)
I have had the pleasure of being one of Mike’s students and one of his assistants for the last 6 years. In such capacity I was privileged to witness the depth of his knowledge on many occasions for students ranging from 6-year old beginners to adult black belts. I will focus here on what I personally experienced as a black belt candidate, but will happily expand on other occasions should I be asked. As a first degree brown belt looking to become a black belt, your first job is to pick an advocate who will guide you and support you through out the grueling black belt process. When I chose Mike, he had never been an advocate for black belt candidates before. Despite this lack of experience, there was no doubt in my mind that he would be an excellent choice. And I was right! His insight was key in enhancing many of my techniques. However, any Panel member will be able to provide technical insight. In my opinion, what sets Mike apart is his holistic approach in the training. Not only did he focus on the quality of my karate, but he also paid attention to my mental state. For example, meditative sessions enable me to restore mental peace and focus while visualization helped me to sharpen my techniques and blind practice improved my balance and my body awareness. I would highly recommend Mike’s input if you wish to not only improve your karate techniques but also become a better martial artist. And you can be reassured that his up-beat personality will keep the process fun… or at least as fun as it can be when put in a pressure lock…

A fountain of martial arts knowledge always delivered gladly and with a smile
Tim D, student (Testimonial)
Mike is one of the best karate teachers in TKA. I can always count on him to deconstruct a technique into parts that I can isolate and improve. I really appreciate his consistent patience and positive attitude. Mike excels not only in teaching specific karate techniques, but also in teaching subtle (but essential) concepts like relaxation and focus.
Hagai G, co-instructor (52) (Testimonial)
Mike has been my instructor for several years now, taking me from Orange belt all the way to Black Belt. This is one long, tough journey as our organization is not a mass producer of black belts, but it was made smooth by Mike’s support, commitment, and his keen eye for what can be fixed and how to go about it, all while letting me experiment and test different options.
Julie M, student (33) (Testimonial)
I've been taking karate for the past few years and Mike Stahly is by far one of my favorite instructors. His lessons are dynamic, fun, and also include yoga inspired stretches and strengthening exercises that all together gives you the tools needed to make your karate powerful and effective. Additionally, when Mike’s teaching, he’s incredibly observant and has the rare ability to give focused individual comments about technique that for me completely revolutionized and improved my martial arts as a whole. I think he’s an excellent teacher and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him for all abilities and ages looking for that next challenge.
Dani S, co-instructor (28) (Testimonial)
Through lessons with Mike Stahly I have been able to learn complex martial art techniques as well as weapon applications. He is a patient and well rounded instructor who was able to tailor lessons to my needs.
Luis F, student (Testimonial)
At the beginning I brought my kids to train martial arts with Michael, but after seeing how patient, dedicated and knowledgeable he is I decided to give it a try and I haven't looked back since.
John B, student (49) (Testimonial)
Over a 25-year period, I have dabbled in different forms of martial arts (Korean, Japanese, and Chinese) and studied under several different teachers. Mike Stahly is an excellent teacher! I have been a student of his for several years now, and he is hard to match for his combination of patience, his wide-ranging knowledge of martial arts, and his ability to “trouble-shoot” his students through areas they have difficulty with.
