More About Coach Mike
I have been a Physical Education teacher and coach for 12 years. I have taught and coached children between the ages of 6-18 years old. I currently teach and coach in the Port Washington School District and coach multiple sports including baseball, volleyball and field hockey. I have coached middle school teams and varsity teams in those sports. I have also previously coached in travel organizations. I currently have New York certifications in coaching and teaching.
I played baseball my entire life from the days of little league to the collegiate level. I played high school at Kellenberg and in college I played at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Over the years I have gotten the opportunity to learn and play among a lot of great coaching minds and have brought that knowledge to my coaching over the last 12 years.
In a typical session I first observe the athlete perform skills so I can see their instincts and ability. I do not like to throw too much information in one session but like to focus on a couple aspects to build on. I always present a “why” we work on things as the ultimate goal is for the athlete to be able to recognize and self correct their skills. Depending on what the athlete wants I can focus on different aspects of the sport or work on one skill at a time like just hitting, infield work, etc. Many times in a session I will breakdown the skill in simpler forms that can translate to gameplay.
