More About Coach Matt

I started my coaching journey in 2009 in South Florida as an Offensive Assistant which was done as a favor to the first year head coach at my alma mater, Coral Springs Christian Academy in Coral Springs, Fl. The volunteering quickly turned into a full-time job as I was elevated to Offensive Coordinator/Offensive line coach/S&C Coach by game two of my first year. I was lucky enough to be part of a team which turned around a 1-19 streak over a two year period, to 9-11 over the next two years with essentially the same roster. In 2011, my family and I moved to Evergreen where I was added to the staff of Evergreen High School to coach Runningbacks. Do to a staffing need, I moved to offensive line and then to Quarterbacks in year two where I also took on the role of passing game coordinator.

This past December, my wife delivered the fantastic news that we were expecting our 2nd son in July. Having missed most of our first son's first year due to football commitments, we made the decision to take off a year from coaching high school in order to spend more time with my family. I am currently assisting a 4th grade Mountain Area Football team while training privately at my discretion. I have personally trained a walk-on Wide Receiver at Colorado State and a starting corner at MIT in both speed/conditioning and football skill work.

I am USA Football certified, a registered permanent CHSAA coach, and am working towards my ISSA Strength and Conditioning certification which will be completed by November of 2014. I am available to work with any age group so long as the athlete is dedicated to the process and committed to the time we spend together.

I was a 2 Year starter at QB for Coral Springs Christian Academy (2 All-County Honorable Mentions) where I won numerous leadership awards as a player and student. I was selected as a captain as both a Junior and a Senior by my peers and coaches

I am a detailed oriented coach who likes to use film as feedback for my clients. I use an application called, "Coach's Eye" which allows me to film an athlete, provide feedback over the film, deliver the film and feedback to the athlete, and track progress. I like to start with the basic skills needed to perform at each position (stance, 1st step, grip, etc) and progress to full skills (route running, 3,5,7 step drops, full oline blocking progression, etc). Having coached and/or studied many different offensive systems, I like to eventually progress to scheme work on a white board. The timing of how we progress through each skill is dependent on the athlete an the rate at which they improve. Speed and agility work will be included in all sessions as a means to a warm-up or conditioning. Each program is designed individually for the athlete to achieve their personal goals.

Client Reviews

As a prospective collegiate athlete, I had vast holes in my game that needed improvement. Coach Van Praag had helped me make significant gains in the weight room in terms of muscle mass, explosive power, pure strength, and lifting technique, but after coming off of major ankle surgery during the last part of my senior season, my speed, agility, and footwork was nonexistant. My effective 40-yard dash time and my linear and lateral acceleration had fallen tremendously. In order to be able to compete at the next level, I knew that I was to regain the on-field explosion that I had prior to the injury, and then some. In the summer leading up to my first season as a college football player, I worked with Coach in order to improve my athleticism through pylometrics, resistance training, and various drills focusing on agility and start-to-stop acceleration. While I have done various "athletic performance training" during my years as an athlete, I can honestly say that my work with Coach Van Praag resulted in the quickest and most significant gains I had ever experienced per given the time. His ingenious drills were some of which I had never seen before, but the results were undeniable. After closely tracking the results of my testing data (including 40 time, L-drills, pro shuttle, and more), several areas of performance had improved by nearly 20% in the span of a month's time. I was put back on the performance level that I was at prior to my injury while also adding the extra athleticism necessary in making the major transition from high school to collegiate competition. Coach Van Praag is in constant pursuit of the latest studies and knowledge available in sports performance and training. His familiarity with professional and collegiate training and nutrition can help even the most advanced high school and collegiate athlete, but even with younger athletes who are looking to set themselves on the right path towards athletic success, Coach can scale back his abundant experience to age and skill-appropriate levels. Whether you are looking to learn valuable training regimens and techniques through strength and resistance training, working on invaluable technical skills that are required for your specific sport, or even introducing yourself to a new sport or athletics as a whole, Coach Matt Van Praag can help you make the improvement you are looking for in conquering your athletic goal.
I coached along side of Matt at Evergreen HS and he always carried himself with a great deal of professionalism. Matt has the traits that it takes to be a great Head Football Coach; high energy, discipline, knowledge and a passion for the game. He is always prepared and puts the time that it takes into studying the game and his opponents. Matt was my son’s QB coach in HS and he respected coach Van Praag as did the other players. I felt extremely lucky that my son had the opportunity to play for Matt.
