More About Coach Matthew
I received my Masters (MS) in Exercise Science from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) and am certified through the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). In addition to my educational background, I have over 13 years of practical training experience in both commercial and private settings. Most notably, I have 2 years of experience working with the Long Beach State Athletics Department. In addition, I have over 13 years of experience working as a personal trainer at various gyms, including Bay Club, 24 Hour Fitness, and Gloveworx.
Although I played every sport as a youth athlete, I focused on basketball and baseball when I entered high school at West High in Torrance. I played both varsity basketball and baseball at West High and was captain of the basketball team in 2011. After suffering a season-ending injury my senior year, my playing career ended and a pursued a career in fitness and athletic training.
I specialize in enhancing lean muscle development, maximizing weight loss, improving body composition, optimizing athletic performance, and injury prevention. Because training experience levels and goals can vary so drastically, I always start off with an assessment to gain an understanding of my client's training experience level, as well as their individual goals. After gaining this understanding, I then formulate an individualized plan that is tailored to fit the needs of that individual. In my initial sessions I am typically assessing balance, muscular symmetry, muscular strength, lifting technique, and a basic understanding of muscular anatomy.
