Summary

While attending Temple University, I became an AAAI/ISMA Certified Personal Trainer. After graduating, I pursued my interest in fitness and basketball. I began volunteering as an assistant coach and head strength and conditioning coach for a high school varsity boy's basketball team. The following year, I accepted a position as the Director of Sports Performance for a Division II collegiate team. I returned to the high school level as an assistant and sports performance coach and soon became the head coach for the JV team while leading the performance develop for the basketball program. In recent years, I am directing and coaching a year-round youth basketball program for middle school boys and providing skill training for teams, small groups, and one-on-one with athletes. I am very proud of my athletes where this is the second year in a row that 90% to all my athletes were able to make their school and travel teams! A big congratulations to them for the work and time they put in!

Through my experience coaching, I have developed a 3 prong approach that has given my athletes a step up on their competition and as proven results in games. This approach focuses on developing skills, improving the physical performance, then how to best translate skills to the game setting. Newer athletes to the sport can step on the court to play with confidence and look like they have been playing for years. More experienced athletes play with more efficiency, sometimes doubling their scoring output while still being a team player or becoming a leader on the team. If you want this competitive edge, want that college scholarship, to beat a rival, have more fun playing against friends, or achieve any goals, my coaching will you get there!

Coach's Corner

There are two things in basketball that anyone can be great at if they put in the time regardless of skill or athletic ability and those are conditioning and defense. Conditioning and defense are a player's backbone and gives you both a physical and mental advantage to your play. Both allow you to wear down your opponent and while defense typically doesn't mean "attack," in basketball it is a must to attack the offense while playing defense. If you can get your match-up more focused on protecting the ball and passing to eliminate pressure, you are winning battles that will win the war. Even if you aren't having a good game offensively, you can fall back on your defense to impact the game. This is often the difference in winning and losing, earning playing time, a college scholarship, or just to get an easy basket to get your offensive game back on track. Most of the teams I coach live by the motto that our best offensive is our defense.

If you want to reach your potential in the sport or life, you need to work at it! For younger ages, I treat my training as a school class that you go to class but also at home you need to do your homework and study to get good grades. As you get older into high school, you need to treat basketball as a part-time job that you are putting a good 8+ hours into practicing weekly. It's not easy and doesn't happen overnight! Through my coaching, I aim to teach and instill the work ethnic athletes need to excel both on and off the court and hold my athletes to the highest standard of practice and commitment to growth to reach their potential at any level.

"You never stay the same, you either get better or you get worse." - Jon Gruden

My highlights during my playing career in basketball didn't come in the form of filling a stat sheet but came in my growth as a student of the game. I had great coaching throughout my career and I would come home from practice and read the plays to find different tweaks within our plays to throw off an opponent. My strength was leadership and constant drive to learn and obtain more knowledge, which has been one of the most important aspects that has translated to my success with coaching. Now with over 10 years of coaching experience, I hope to bring my passion for the sport to your son or daughter's life!

Each session is custom designed towards the goals of each individual athlete. Generally, the first part of the session consists of a dynamic warm-up and drills to prepare the athlete athletically, mentally, and physically for the session. Sessions geared towards developing shooting will focus on shot form, release, and footwork. If the focus is on ball handing, the drills will center around dribble combinations while pounding the ball hard with eye's up at the most basic level. After any skill specific warm-up, we transition into mix a high intensity or high repetition drills designed around the focus(s) of the session so the athlete can get additional conditioning as well as skill development. Throughout the session, free throw shooting is used to transition between drills or earn a break for water. At the end of the session, I will ask the athlete what they learned or review what we covered and discuss their goals, progression towards those goals, and how we will achieve them to keep the athlete motivated and focused. After each session, you can expect a detailed follow-up outlining specific areas and drills you or your athlete can focus on before the next time we meet to make improvements practicing at home.

Coach Matthew was very responsive and prompt in his communication when arranging the sessions, and he gave very useful feedback afterwards. Highly recommended!

coach matt

was very approachable and detailed in his review drills that he sent after first session.

Coach Matthew was great. My 9 year old enjoyed the first session and is happily looking forward to setting up some more sessions in advance of the season. Coach Matthew's one-on-one attention is really helpful, and he has communicated really well with me about what to expect, how he thought the session went and what my son can do to continue to develop.

Coach Matt did an Amazing job with my son! My son, having played for over 6 years, learned things that he's not be taught. His skills are improving with every session and his confidence in his ability and self really shows. I can't thank Coach Matt enough for his attention to the details, great workouts and insightful feedback. I highly recommend Coach Matt for training!

Matt was wonderful with my 12 year old son and his friend today. My son is a bit timid but likes to play basketball. In just one session Matt was patient and really took the time to get him to understand the fundamentals. I look forward to seeing what future lessons help develop.

Great with my son

We just had our first session with Coach Matt! He was phenomenal. He took the time to really evaluate my son, lean what his goals are and progress was made right from the start. Coach Matt took time to learn about my child before our work together as well. He went above and beyond to explain the drills my son can work on outside of the coaching sessions. My son thinks he is awesome! Thanks Coach Matt!!

Matt is easy to work with, easy to communicate with, good at coaching, makes you feel comfortable. Recommended. I’ve only done once but I think your skills will improve if you use him.

Wonderful experience training with coach Matthew.Very knowledgeable and professional.

I am really satisfied with my decision to have my 7 yr old son train with Coach Matt. He is incredibly thorough in his feedback and provides a phenomenal fundamental foundation for kids trying who love playing basketball. I’ve seen marked improvement in my sons playing and Coach Matt does a great job of keeping it loose and fun. He covers everything from shooting technique to dribbling/ball skills and scoring. I would highly recommend Coach Matt for any age.

My 10 year old daughter just finished her second basketball session with Coach Matt. In just 2 sessions, we have seen a huge improvement! She’s dribbling better, making more baskets, has better form, and is learning the triple threat position. Coach Matt has been great with her. He challenges her during the session and even gives her drills to do at home.

If your looking for someone who is knowledgeable about the game, cares about the details, and will push you and keep you on your toes book him.

Coach Mathew is a great coach. We all liked his sincerity, dedication and love for the game. It is just my son’s 2nd coaching with Mathew and my son likes to learn basketball from him. It is very difficult to please my son and I am glad my son wants to come for more practices with coach Mathew. Only when a person follows or teaches what he is passionate about, they can show this much dedication. We are very happy with the coach.

Coach Matt was great with my son. He took time to evaluate him, ask him what he thought his strengths were and his weakness were and what he wanted to improve on. His drills during his session was great and my son is so excited to practice these drills at home. We will definitely continue with Coach Matt

Coach Matt was great! We could see the progress in our daughter after only one session. She's very excited for her next lesson!

I started with a Combo-package of 2 beginner sessions: one was mainly introductory and finding out what skills to improve and the second was to build upon that with more involved drills. For my level, I needed to refine the basics of ball-handling and shooting while building good habits. Coach Matthew was able to help me develop basic drills, make them progressively harder, and also provided continued feedback through text throughout the process. I will be looking into future sessions with Coach Matthew.

We have had two sessions.....my boys are 7 and 9. Matt has been great with them. Getting ready to book my next 2pack!

Fantastic first session with Matthew. He really knows his stuff! Highly recommended!

Coach Matthew was great! He really took his time to get to know my soon during the first session. He was helpful in determining what my son needed to really work on to become a better wrestler.

Coach Matt has been great with working with our son who just began wrestling this year. He has been working on technique and stamina to complement what our son is doing in his club. After just 2 sessions we have seen an improvement in skill and confidence in our son.

Coach Matt made a huge impression on both me and my son at our first session. He asked for input on my son's strengths and weaknesses as well as the goals my son had for the upcoming basketball season, then tailored the session using this info. The training session was extremely well planned and organized with no wasted time. Coach Matt also provided detailed feedback on my son's game after the session as well as areas to work on between sessions. By the end of the second session, my son had already noticed improvement on his jumper and dribble attack moves. We would highly recommend Coach Matt to anyone serious about improving their game and ready to put in work.

Coach Matt is an excellent coach. My son's are ages 7 and 5. He was very engaging with them. He did drills that was challenging for them but not overwhelming. I asked if they liked it and it was a resounding yes. After our experience I'd recommend Coach Matt

Coach Matt did a great job analyzing what my son needed to work on to improve his game and then showing him drills to focus on those things. Did a good job working to his age as well. Followed up afterwards with feedback & drill reminders. Would recommend him.

Matthew is great. My son loves working with him. Keeps him moving and does great drills.

Coach Matt has been awesome so far. Def good with the kids and has solid coaching drills. My son is learning more and more each session and enjoying every minute of it.

He has great patience and explain exercises well and pushes me to my limit.

Matt is a good coach! Alex was hoping to find a indoor place for practice but they had first session in a park. Other than that we are happy with the coach!

Very productive and professional

Coach Matt is very knowledgeable, he went into detail about working out including workouts on my own and diet. Coach Matt is easy to contact and makes himself available if I have any questions about workouts or food choices. He always explains why he thinks which option is best for me. In two workouts, I feel an improvement in the areas I want to work on and my confidence level has increased greatly. I enjoyed training with Coach Matt and would recommend him to anyone looking to improve their fitness.

This was my first time working with a personal trainer. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was hoping that coach Matthew and I would work well with one another since it was my first time having help train. I reached out to him because I felt myself slacking in certain areas and figured I could use the help. After reviewing several other trainers; I felt that coach Matthew possessed most of the qualities I was looking for in a coach. The first session we had; coach Matthew introduced me to routines that worked out areas of my body that I had ignored for quite some time. That aspect of his training was well appreciated and also reminded me why I wanted a personal trainer to begin with.

I also had the opportunity to use equipment I've shied away from in the gym when working alone. Matthew also pays close attention to body-form, which is very crucial when it comes to safety and seeing results. I always felt confident with every routine he threw at me. Coach Matthew's workouts have been challenging, but rewarding.

I've also struggled with dieting and after explaining to Matthew my daily diet; the next day I received a message from him requesting that I send him a list of the foods I've eaten that day. (That's not a part of the plan I purchased.) I was shocked that he would go a little out of the way to ensure my goals were being met. Coach Matthew has also given me some basic recipes that would also help me achieve the goals I set for myself. I found his suggestions very helpful because I often struggle with knowing what's ok and what's not. I went into training with coach Matthew not expecting too much, but he has shown me that he does not believe in job titles and will go beyond what his profile says. That's someone I would work with time and time again.

Excellent basketball coach!

Coach Matthew is great! After a few email exchanges about what I was looking to accomplish for my son, Matt came up with a plan that will help him during the Crew (rowing) season and convert to lifting weights during the summer. He spent time on the phone to cover the ice breaker part of the conversation and made to the gym ready to go.

Provided a no excuse workout which needs no equipment at all and will continue to work with at the gym until they develop a solid 7 day routine. Looking forward to him working with my son even more.

Thanks Matt,
Derek

Coach Matt is an excellent teacher. He works with his students every second of the scheduled time. My son has learned many new skills and is excited about using them in his next practice session with the team.

Matt is a great coach, Daniel feels confident, engaged and excited about the sessions with Matt, he had a great experience, Matt quickly established a real connection with Daniel, he identified his current level and adjusted his pace to align with it, this allows Daniel to enjoy the sessions and feel in control of his progress, I am very pleased with Matt's coaching style and so is Daniel.

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Matthew in 2012 when he visited our school as the member of a men’s basketball league using our gym space to play their games. Matthew noticed the quotes and paraphernalia related to the boy’s varsity basketball team around my desk and immediately expressed an interest to help the team. When Matthew was informed of the state mandated requirements to work with our students, such as obtaining clearances, he immediately jumped into action and submitted his paperwork to the office within weeks. In addition, when Matthew was told that the school could not pay him for his services and that his work would be on a volunteer basis, Matthew replied, “That’s fine with me, I just want to help the team.” This is the kind of person Matthew is; community service driven with a purpose and committed. Matthew was hired as a volunteer assistant coach to the boy’s varsity basketball team. He currently serves as the ‘Strength and Conditioning’ Coach and does an outstanding job developing our student-athletes. At the inception of his hiring, Matthew was industrious in introducing several methods to motivate and inspire our students in the classroom, on the basketball court and in their personal healthy lives. To date, he continues to function in this capacity. His leadership is impeccable. One thing I am most impressed with is Matthew’s work ethic. Even though he is a non-paid volunteer, he works at an extremely high level that is unmatched by some of the paid staff. He is responsible, dependable, and accountable. He is always developing ways to improve the program and our student-athletes. Matthew is punctual for staff meetings, games, team meetings and practices. He is dependable, inspirational, and helpful in leading team meetings and loyal to upholding the values of our basketball program and school as well. In addition to being respected by our students, Matthew is well respected by the coaching staff, the school and our parents. He maintains a meaningful relationship not only with me, but the assistant coaching staff as well. Matthew is truly the example of a dedicated and committed staff member and even more so as a person. He is dynamic in his work, intelligent and responsible in meeting all of his obligations, whether it is personal or related to the development of our students. It is a great pleasure having Matthew part of our staff.
I was in need of a basketball trainer to get me back into shape, to push me passed my limits, and to motivate me. Matt was the ideal trainer to help me accomplish these goals in order to play basketball overseas. Matt created daily workouts and drills that were built around the areas that I particularly needed to focus on including strength and conditioning, and basketball training. Matt is very educated in these areas and I was assured by his level of expertise that I would reach my goals. He developed drills to help me build up my stamina, increase my leg and upper body strength, improve on my shooting, and develop my defensive skills. Matt explained his reasoning behind each workout. He also provided me with drills to do outside of the gym on my own time to keep up with his workouts. Matt was very supportive throughout my training and provided constructive feedback on each drill, helping to improve my game both offensively and defensively. Matt is an extremely dedicated and passionate basketball trainer who is willing to put in as much work as you are. I am very happy with my decision to train with Matt because he helped me get to the level of performance required to play basketball overseas.
