More About Coach Matt
I have been with my team since the fall of 1997. In this time, I have been the Head Coach of HRA, the HRCA Summer Swim Teams, HRCA Masters, as well as the competitive swim lesson program Rocky Mountain Swim Academy. I am also working with Pete Alfino and Mile High Multisport in creating opportunities for Colorado’s finest tri-athletes to train in open water swimming at Grant Ranch Lake. In 2006, I was named the Colorado Swimming (CSI) and Colorado Masters (COMSA) Coach of the Year. I currently hold an ASCA level 4 ranking as well as a certified USAT Level 1 coach.
I have a philosophy that is to build an organization which is committed to providing an enjoyable, complete, and competitive swimming experience for swimmers of all appropriate ages and abilities. It is my tradition to provide a challenging, yet positive teaching and training environment in which swimmers can develop a sense of self-esteem and pride through individual and team achievement. I am additionally committed to excellence in performance. My team continues to strive to be a competitive leader in the state, national, and international competitions.
One of my strengths is my relationship with the athlete. I am demanding but reasonable. I believe that you must enjoy the process of preparation.
In the past decade some of the highlights of my team are: Qualifying 3 swimmers for the 2008 Olympic trials, sending 5 swimmers to Senior Nationals/US Open, 5 swimmers to Junior Nationals, over 25 qualifiers to Sectional Championships, 6 individual swimmers ranked NAG top 16 swimmers, multiple Colorado State Champions and State record holders.
With this comes the ultimate goal for me. “I want to get kids ready to swim at the next level, what ever level they work to achieve.” My team has sent swimmers with both athletic and academic scholarships to some of the best schools in the country. Past swimmers are currently attending Colorado State, University of Georgia, San Diego State, Rutgers, Ohio State, University of Wyoming, Clarion, University of Nebraska, Brigham Young University, Yale, Colorado School of Mines, and University of Maine.
I was a Graduate of the University of Texas 1992-1997. As a swimmer, I was a member of the 1996 National Championship team. I was an Olympic Trials Finalist in 1996 (100 Fly), 9 time NCAA finalist, 6 time NCAA All American. I attended Regis Jesuit High School from 1989 to 1992 where I was the Colorado HS State champion and former record holder.
