More About Coach Martin

For several years I have been doing individual basketball skills training. I've trained middle school and high school players, boys and girls, and help run clinics for local youth and AAU programs in New Jersey.

- 3-year varsity starter and 1,000-point scorer at South Brunswick High School (NJ)
- Central Jersey Group 4 State Champion 2007
- 1,000-point scorer, 1st Team All-MAC Conference at Eastern University -
- Competed overseas with USA Athletes International

My philosophy is based on having fun and establishing a comfortable environment for my players.

But workouts emphasize going HARD and GAME SPEED. I focus on simulating game situations while developing what the player needs to work on in their overall game.

My sessions always start with a warm-up which includes form shooting, Mikan layups and McHales. From there, we usually go into ball handling drills for about 10-15 minutes, and then we go into live conditioning drills emphasizing footwork and shooting off the dribble. Each workout is designed specifically for the player's skill set.

Session duration is 1 hour.

From the moment my son started training with Coach Martin his confidence returned. Chris says it feels like he's studying for a test by training with Coach Martin. He's absorbing what's being taught and can translate it all to me on the ride home. I see the sparkle in his eye as he believes he'll be a better player in the years to come. Thx Coach.

Great coach. Keeps my son engaged in the game. He looks forward to training with Coach Martin every week.

Coach Martin is a very good coach. He knows how to connect with the person he is coaching, motivates the person to do well and teaches the person to push himself. My son had a great first session with Coach Martin but was unable to complete the full hour because my son became unwell. Coach was very understanding and yet still encouraging. My son still left the session feeling confident and with a positive attitude. Looking forward to session 2.

We were very happy with the first session --- looking forward to new skills learned and an improved progression of Rahul's overall game. Would absolutely recommend.

Excellent coach. My son loves getting trained by him. Just after two sessions i could see the difference in my son’s play. Will be scheduling sessions for my daughter as well.

Martin does a great job coaching my son. I like how he focuses on developing a strong foundation with fundamentals skills on which to build upon.

Coach Martin is awesome! My two 13 years old boys really enjoyed their training with him AND he has a amazing basketball court especially made for training!

My son had great time working out - looking forward to booking again!

Learned a lot of things from coach Martin!

Coach Martin was the perfect choice for my daughter! She was very comfortable and very receptive of of his training and instruction. She's very excited and can't wait for her next session. We will definitely be purchasing more!

Exactly what I was looking for! Session couldn't have been any better. Highly recommended. -NS

Our daughter has played in middle school for two seasons and last spring completed her first year of AAU level play. We all realized after the AAU season that she did not possess the fundamental skills that she needed in order to play at the level that she wanted…several basketball clinics later we realized that she still hadn’t gotten the exposure and opportunity to work on these important fundamentals….my wife sought out several different trainers to no avail…enter Coach Martin… We received his flyer in our mailbox and took a chance… how fortunate for us…he offers a first rate court facility that is fully lit for later appointments, great flexibility with scheduling and is always very responsive to questions or requests to change an appointment time. His level of expertise was apparent at the first session when within minutes after the session he began identifying and correcting the poor mechanics of our daughter’s jump shot (4 different coaches and half a dozen clinics over 18 months had failed to do so)….. the level of creativity in the selection of drills and exercises is remarkable…. For the past six weeks, Molly hasn’t performed the same ball handling drill twice, yet each exercise has been directed to build that skill set…...its always a challenge and never boring…there have been multiple shooting exercises that have been designed to replicate live game conditions, teaching her to shoot from different areas of the court, shoot when fatigued, self-correct her mechanics when shots are missed and most importantly to maintain her confidence when shooting….. the attention to detail in her performance is always focused, there is always an emphasis on getting the mechanics right which is always accompanied with an explanation as to why the mechanics are important and how the mechanics are manifested in an actual game…. Molly has made significant progress over a very short period of time….The ultimate testament, though, is Molly’s own experience with her coach…when I asked what she liked most about Coach Martin, she replied, “he's a fun spirit”. We hope to engage him for the rest of the year and for many more years to come.
Martin possesses by far one of the sharpest basketball minds I know. His attention to detail is second to none. I've had the pleasure of knowing Martin since high school. His passion, abilities and IQ are part of the reasons why he's been a 1,000-point scorer at the high school and collegiate levels. Not only is he a great basketball player/trainer, he's a great man. Kids and adults alike walk away with a better sense of the game just through conversations with Martin. The way he sees the game and is able to translate it to others might be the his most important quality, along with his patience and sheer desire to truly make any player he works with a better basketball student.
I was a teammate with Martin for one year of college. I came in as a wide-eyed freshmen straight out of high school and I had so much to learn. Martin was going into his senior year and had already accomplished so much in his career. I instantly looked up to him because of the success he had. He also did a great job of taking me under his wing to teach me and groom me into a better player. We worked out everyday individually either before or after practice to work on our skills, this time kept us sharp and gave us a much needed edge come game time. During games and practices Martin was the leader out on the floor. Always the loudest voice in the gym, he did a great job of keeping everyone organized and responsible for what they needed to do. Although he was a very skilled offensive player, what really separated him was his emphasis to the defensive end of the floor. He knew that if the team defended at a high level we had a chance to be very good, and he stressed that. Everyday, every practice, every play, was all out on that end. And if he ever felt like a teammate was not pushing themselves or giving all they had he had no shame to let them know. Martin was one of the most driven and hungry people I've ever met and I admire him for that.
Martin Soaries - one of the highest Basketball IQ's I have ever seen. Outstanding teammate and even better leader. His leadership skills were by far the best I have ever been around. He did not just lead vocally, but he also lead by example. He came to every practice and game and played it like it was his last. One thing that stands out the most for me about Martin is his willingness to win and make others around him better. He was never concerned about individual stats but was always more concerned about the overall outcome. Whenever I needed help on or off the court, he was the one I turned to. Honored that I had the opportunity to learn and play along side with him. Wish I could have played many more seasons with him.
My son Nick, who is 11 years old, has been training with Coach Martin Soaries for the past 3 weeks. I had been looking for an elite basketball trainer to work with Nick that was close to home and when I heard about Basketball Society, I decided to give them a try. Nick loved the training starting with his first session. It was clear that Coach Martin was extremely knowledgeable about the game of basketball having played college ball himself. The drills he puts Nick through are extremely intense and he pushes him to perform at his highest level, but in a respectful and motivating fashion. I was impressed at Coach Martin’s ability to communicate different basketball drills and techniques in simple language that Nick understood. Further, Coach Martin often demonstrates the drills before asking Nick to perform them, which is a good teaching technique for an 11-year old player. He also explains the purpose of each drill and how it translates into his game play. The training sessions begin with a series of warm up drills followed by intensive drills (ball-handling, shooting, pick & roll, footwork, finishing at the room, passing, etc.) performed in a fashion that builds not only skill, but strength. I have been thoroughly impressed with Coach Martin and would highly recommend him anyone who is looking to become a better basketball player.
Martin was the most skilled and competitive player I have ever played with. Aside from the skill and athleticism, it always felt like he was one step ahead of everyone mentally on the court. He was always aware of not only his assignments but everyone else’s on the team as well. He was very vocal so being a natural leader came easy to him. His knowledge and intensity on both sides of the court were unmatched; we as teammates fed off that.
