More About Coach Makel
I have coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels. After graduating from Xavier University, I spent a semester coaching there before continuing my professional career with Indy Eleven. Through my coaching experience, I have worked with athletes ranging from ages 6–15, as well as college players, helping them develop their technical skills, game understanding, confidence, and overall love for the sport.
While I do not currently hold any industry certifications, my hands-on experience coaching youth players and my background within collegiate and professional soccer have equipped me with valuable knowledge and leadership skills that I bring to every training session.
I have competed at both the NCAA Division II and Division I levels throughout my collegiate soccer career. Following college, I was selected in the MLS Draft and am currently in my third year as a professional soccer player.
Throughout my playing career, I have earned multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards and have been recognized with several Team of the Tournament selections. These accomplishments reflect my commitment to excellence, leadership, and consistency both on and off the field.
My experience competing at the collegiate and professional levels has provided me with valuable insight into player development, high-performance training, and the dedication required to succeed at the highest levels of the game. I enjoy sharing that knowledge with younger athletes to help them grow in their skills, confidence, and understanding of the sport
A typical session with me is tailored to the individual athlete and their position on the field. I believe every position has unique demands, so I design training sessions that focus on the specific skills and situations players will encounter in games.
Sessions usually begin with technical work, such as passing, receiving, dribbling, first touch, and ball mastery. From there, we progress into position-specific drills that help athletes develop the tools they need to be successful in their role. For example, defenders may focus on positioning, tackling, and reading the game, while attackers may work on finishing, movement, and creating scoring opportunities.
I also incorporate game-like scenarios and decision-making exercises because soccer is about more than just technical ability—players need to be able to apply their skills under pressure. My goal is to help athletes become more comfortable and confident in situations they face during matches, making the game feel a little less difficult and allowing them to play faster and more effectively.
