More About Coach Luis

Guzman, a former standout on the court at Temple, comes to Stetson after spending the last year as an assistant coach at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y.

“Luis brings a lot of experience to our program,” Jones said. “He has a really interesting background, having filled a variety of roles in the past. He’s been an Ops guy before so he knows what’s expected. He had a great career as a player at Temple, and has some experience working in the NBA office. I’m really excited to have him join our staff.”

Guzman spent most of this past summer as an assistant coach for the Dominican Republic national team during the recently-completed FIBA World Cup in China, coaching under Nestor ‘Che’ Garcia. The D.R. finished Cup play among the top 16 teams in the world.

“Basketball has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Guzman said. “During that time, I’ve had the privilege of learning from some the most respected names in the game. With this new role as part of Donnie Jones’ staff, I am honored to have the chance to work with another well-respected and admired coach. It is definitely an exciting time to be part of Stetson Basketball, and I am so thankful to Coach Jones for giving me the opportunity.

In his one season at Monroe, the Mustangs were 25-6 and won the Region XI championship. Monore finished the season ranked No. 23 nationally.

Prior to his time at Monroe, Guzman spent one season as Director of Player Development at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. During his year at Rider the Broncs went 22-10 overall and 15-3 in conference play, capturing the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title. Although the Broncs were upset in the first round of the MAAC Tournament, they still earned a bid into the 2018 NIT.

Guzman also spent time working with the NBA and WNBA in the Game Operations Center, where he supervised and supported the game ops staff while auditing basketball statistics and operations violations.

In 2015-16 Guzman returned to Temple as a member of the coaching staff, serving as a graduate manager while pursuing his Master’s degree.

Guzman was Basketball Hall of Famer John Chaney's last recruit at Temple. Playing under Fran Dunphy, Guzman helped lead the Owls to three Atlantic 10 Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances during his career, serving as team captain as a senior. During his time at Temple, Guzman received the Anthony Cimino Award for excellence in athletics and academics.

Prior to returning to Temple, Guzman played professionally in eight different countries over a five-year span. He won championships while competing in the Dominican Republic, Denmark, Mongolia and Mexico. He also represented the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Games in 2011, and was a member of the silver-medal winning U17 team at the 2005 Centrobasket Tournament.

Guzman graduated from Temple in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in business marketing. He later obtained his master's degree in sports business from Temple in 2017.

A 2010 Temple graduate, Guzman led the Owls to three Atlantic 10 Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances, serving as team captain as a senior. Following his graduation in just three and a half years, he played professionally in eight different countries over a five-year span. He won titles while competing in the Dominican Republic, Denmark, Mongolia and Mexico. He also represented the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Games in 2011 and was a member of the silver-medal winning U17 team at the 2005 Centrobasket tournament. Guzman returned to Temple in 2015-16 to work with the team while earning his master’s degree.

Guzman has also served as the founder/tournament coordinator for the Washington Heights Invitational. He was named the recipient of the Anthony Cimino Award for excellence in athletics and academics at Temple.

The program is designed around player development, fully dedicated to making basketball players reach their maximum potential and skill level. I do not stop there however; we also believe in making committed players into top shape physical athletes. I work with players of all different ages and skill levels.

Client Reviews

Coach Guzman is an exceptional trainer with a keen eye for identifying areas for improvement. He is working with my son to enhance his basketball IQ, offensive/defensive skills, ball handling and footwork. Coach has an impressive background: played for Temple and professionally overseas. Among other things he is coaching the Dominican Republic National Team and serves as Director of Player Development for Rider University. It is a rare opportunity to receive coaching from an expert who has both the experience as an elite athlete and on the coaching staff of a DI school.
Would highly recommend him!

luis has a bright future in coaching! He played the point guard position: demonstrated an high basketball IQ for the game and always willing to help others succeed.
