More About Coach Khannouchi

I have been involved in professional athletics in several capacities since 1986: elite runner, coach, agent, race event consultant and physical therapist. I am probably most well known for having coached my husband, Khalid Khannouchi, to three sub 2:06 marathons, including the American record of 2:05:38 (London, 2002), and to four wins of the Chicago marathon. But throughout my career I’ve helped many other athletes ― from children and teens, to recreational and sub-elite runners, to other world-class elites — reach their highest potential at distances from the 5K to the marathon. Prior to this I was an elite runner myself, representing my country of origin, the Dominican Republic.

I have successfully coached many sub-elite and elite runners to new personal bests, both as an in-person coach and as a remote coach. Runners benefit from my holistic approach to training and coaching: when an athlete works with me, he or she will get personalized attention and a training plan customized to their ability and goals. Moreover, I monitor training adaptation and make adjustments throughout the training cycle to prevent overtraining and/or injury.
My personal goal is to help recreational runners to achieve new goals and help those that will like to improve to have a better performance with the same opportunity that elite runners have.

Coaching experience
I have experience coaching runners across the spectrum:
Elite: My elite athletes have achieved world and national records, won or placed well in major marathons, and set course records in many highly competitive road races.
Sub-elite and recreational: These are non-professional runners who simply want to become the best runners that they can be. In some cases, I have taken recreational runners to the sub-elite level and sub-elites to the elite level.
High school and college: Working with individuals and school teams, I emphasize healthy development so young runners can continue to compete and flourish as competitive runners into adulthood, avoiding burnout and injury along the way.
Children, non-runners: I have worked in physical education and general fitness, having designed and implemented programs for children, teens and adults. I take the special needs of growing children into account. My programs use a range of activities, including running, swimming/deep water running, weight training and other forms of cross-training, as well as games to keep participants engaged.

Coaching accomplishments

Khalid Khannouchi
Overcoming overtraining: I identified Khalid’s chronic fatigue syndrome shortly after meeting him in 1994. He was clearly overtrained and needed a new method of training once he was recovered from his exhaustion. I used mesotherapy to treat him and he was ready for hard training again in just three months.
Moving from the track to the roads: Khalid was racing the 1500-5000 on the track in 1995. I thought that he was better suited for road racing, so we moved him in that direction. After that he began racing and winning major road races. From a managerial and career development standpoint, I also noted that Khalid’s income potential was higher as a marathoner than it would be at the shorter distances. In 1996 I negotiated his contract with New Balance.
Achieving sustained success in the marathon: In 1997 Khalid ran and won his first marathon at Chicago. It was the fastest debut marathon ever run and the fourth fastest marathon performance at the time. Khalid was the first marathoner to break 2:06, setting a new world record at Chicago in 1999. In 2002 he ran 2:05:38 in London, setting a new world record and an American record that still stands. Khalid also owns 6 of the top 10 American marathon performances. In addition to the marathon, Khalid has held or holds numerous course records for shorter distances, most notably at Peachtree (10K), Falmouth (7.1M) and New Haven (20K).
Patrick Kiptum: In just six months of training, Patrick’s marathon PR dropped by four minutes, gaining him a second place in the 2000 San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon.

Love Sandra! She knows what she's talking and I believe with her skills I'll reach my goals. She's very thorough, listens well, and is encouraging and upbeat. She's had to tweak my workout because I'm such a beginner, but I appreciate that she's concerned with my welfare and that I remain injury-free! I can't wait until our next session!

As a top level coach, Sandra’s accomplishments are outstanding. She has coached many top athletes, headed by Khalid Khannouchi, who broke two world marathon records and who still holds the US marathon record. However, Sandra’s coaching successes only tell a small part of who she is. Sandra is committed, hard working and instantly likeable. She has shown that she can work easily with others and would be a recognizable and well liked person in any department. I have seen Sandra work with athletes of all abilities, and her enthusiasm is infectious and motivating. She would be an excellent coach at any level, one who could bring out the best in her athletes. It is my belief that any program would be proud to have Sandra as a coach and representative.
Rafael began marathon experience in New York City Marathon in 1997. His time was 3:09:17. Return to New York in 1998 and finish in 2:56:04 time. In 1999 went to Chicago Marathon and made a time of 2:45:59. Is during this marathon that Rafael know to Sandra at this moment coach of the best runner at that time: Eventually, they began to be friends and Sandra began to training Rafael in January 2000. The first marathon under Sandra training was Boston Marathon 2000 and Rafael set a personal record of 2:43:11, but the a best progress came when Rafael ran the Chicago Marathon 2000 in 2:36:01. Rafael has development a great consistency under Sandra coaching and as result of it he have 17 of 18 marathons under 3:00:00. 14 of 18 marathon under 2:50:00. 9 of 18 under 2:40:00 and 2 of 18 under 2:35:00.
Sandra is a great human being and running coach! Her insightful thoughts, experience and training programs have improved dramatically my runner’s spirit and times. I used to be a +3:30hr recreational marathoner; after I met her 5 years ago, I’ve become a competitive runner setting afterwards only sub-3hr marathon times, qualified 6 years in a row for Boston and set a PR of 2:55 in the fall of 2009 at NYC.
