More About Coach Justin

I began playing soccer at the age of 3 and have a year of refereeing experience for Wilmington's Cape Fear Soccer Club, my experience coaching and training athletes began at the age of 18 years old while attending the nationally ranked University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a D1 college student-athlete. During my time as a D1 student-athlete I coached and was a camp counselor for several separate "Charlotte 49er Boys Soccer Camps" (ages 5-13); I coached for their "Junior Advanced Camps" (ages 9-14); I coached/scouted at their "Soccer ID Camps" (ages 14-18 & Jr. College) as well as their "Elite Prospects Camp" (ages 14-18 & Jr. College); I also coached for 2 years at "Futbol Club Carolina Alliance" for both youth boys and girls soccer (ages 7-10). I accumulated my volunteer work hours by coaching day clinics with my team or by speaking to the "Mecklenburg County Boy Scouts of America" by myself. I also volunteered/assistant coached sessions for "Carolina Rapids Soccer Club" before moving on from being a student athlete to beginning my professional career. I have coached entry level recreational soccer all the way to college recruitment at a Jr. college level. My typical range of coaching experience extends from the age of 5 up to 18 years old. During my time at UNC-Charlotte I had course work in athletic training, exercise science, child psychology, childhood development, adolescent psychology and criminal justice.

My drills and activities will vary based upon the athletes understanding of the game as well as their skill level. A general out line of how I run my sessions are as follows:
Incorporate movement and stretching (5 Minutes)
Introduce ball for light passing and moving (5 Minutes)
Personalized skill game to help transition into drills in a fun, challenging, and engaging manner (5 minutes)

-TECHNIQUE (Using repetition and movement to challenge the athlete with specific basic soccer scenarios)
Focusing on improving controlling the ball while faced with varied obstacles and scenarios (10 minutes)
Focusing on timing the receiving of passes through varied angles and drills (5 Minutes)
Focusing on timing the completion of passes based off of varying movements and speeds (5 Minutes)

Structured scenario to better understand when to take 1 or 2 touches (5 minutes)
Skill game that focuses on how much weight to put into a pass/shot and what type of pass/shot to make (10 min)
Specialized attacking and/or defending scenario based off of the athletes desired position (7 minutes)
-COOLDOWN (Importance of athletes taking care of the body)
Proper active recovery and stretching (3-5 Minutes)

What an athlete can expect from a typical session with me ultimately depends on the individuals strengths and weaknesses. Some coaches are not willing to teach entry level players interested in learning the basics of the game or do not posses the extra experience needed to help guide them towards the next steps that an athlete may want to reach. A session with me consists of focusing primarily on consistently building a belief within themselves in a fun and engaging manner. I asses the skill level that the athlete begins with and through repetition I set goals and stages with the athlete that allows them to notice their own progress. I find it imperative that the athlete is challenged in a reasonable manner through understanding and positive motivation.

Coach Justin has been a huge help to my two children. We have hired him for our 5 and 8 year olds to help improve technique. He is very communicative. He is patient and makes sure that the kids understand what he’s explaining before moving on to a new drill. We will continue to use him!

Had an excellent first session. After one workout, Justin has put my daughter completely at ease and has identified many of the things she needs to improve while also building up her confidence in her ability. She is very excited for her next workout, and I am very impressed with Justin!

Coach Justin did a great job working with my 9 year old to boost confidence and build foundation. Looking forward to next session. Thanks

Coach Justin was a strong leader and coach for my girls. He built on their strengths to help them feel confident. We look forward to our next session!

Great first session! I saw immediate improvement in my sons weak areas from day one. Looking forward to seeing how far Coach Justin can take him!

So far we are very pleased with Coach Justin. Looking forward to continuing training with him.

Justin really took the time to connect with my son and enthusiastically engaged him in the session. The way he teaches foundations and techniques is unique, relatable and ensures the youth is focused and working to a level they didn’t know they had in them (all through positive reinforcement and clear explanation of the “why” not just the “how”).
As a frame of reference, I’ve been playing and coaching soccer for over 40 years combined and we chose Coach Up on a whim while in Florida as my son is planning to switch at U14 from mid & striker to goalie (his coach back home is a former EPL goalie). Justin ensured that my son started learning the relatable skills and a real understanding of role of the goalie in the game. I’ve seen very few coaches translate lessons into fun so easily and my son begged me to add 3 more lessons in the same week with Justin.

Great session today coach. I love how you keep it fresh by reinforcing core skills you have taught in earlier sessions with different activities in subsequent sessions. I can definitely see Ben implementing your message about slowing things down when he receives the ball at practice and games with his team. Great Job!

Justin’s enthusiasm for the game is contagious and as an educator, he genuinely cares about helping his students not only learn the fundamentals of the game, but develop the confidence needed to succeed.

He also takes the time to really get to know his students, their strengths and areas for improvement, and customizes the session accordingly. His approach is very positive and motivational with the kids.

Since her first practice with Justin, my daughter has been practicing daily and is actually excited to train and improve her skills.

Very passionate, knowledgeable and technical. This is exactly what fits me and what I needed.

Justin is a great motivator. My son looks forward to every session. Justin crafts a specific lesson plan for each time they work together. He challenges him to believe in his abilities and reach for their potential. I have seen him implement techniques and strategies in practices with his team. Those little wins motivate them to keep improving.

Coach Justin

Coach Justin is an outstanding coach. He helps me a lot to improve my technique as a goalkeeper with a lot of different methods. He is one of the few good goalkeeper coaches in the area. He passes me the passion of playing during the training and gives me some tips that make a big difference during the game. The sessions are fun, enjoyable and challenging!
