I have been part of the national track community for the past 20 years. I have been coaching for the last 14 years at various level, including the Division 1 level at the University of Delaware. I have also been a teacher for the past 12 years. I have taught grade 6 to grade 12 students, and everything in between.

I have coached multiple, conference, county, sectional, group and meet of champion winners and medalist.

I started participating in track and field in 8th grade. I started off throwing shot put and discus and have not looked back since. In high school I was a state champion in the shot put and a runner up in discus. I was also a 2 time medalist at the Penn Relays in the discus throw. I have had the chance to compete at the nike indoor and outdoor nationals against the best competition in the country. My college career followed a very similar path. At the University of Delaware I qualified for IC4A's 8 times and was named all east 2 times. I also qualified for the NCAA outdoor Nationals my senior year. That same year I broke the University of Delaware Shot put record and am ranked number 2 in discus. In my college career I won over 30 meets in totals.

State Champion (high school shot put)
NCAA Qualifier (high school and college)
School Record Holder in the Shot Put

When throwing it is important to build routines. This would be the average practice for shot put, discus or jav.

1) Warm up
-One lap around the track
-Light plyometrics
-Stretching

2) Technique based drills
-Depending on skill level these could vary. If the thrower is a glider or spinner I will do footwork technique drills to improve form. If the thrower is new to the sport we will work on releases using lighter shot puts. We will review technique with modeling by myself, quick video clips (I always bring my ipad and camera) and pictures.

3) Throwing
-We will then do a very regimented throwing session. I will set the amount of throws and at what effort they will be performed at before each session. Some sessions will consist of 20 plus throws, and others might only be 8.

4) Video analysis
-The best way to learn is to watch yourself throw. Every great thrower does this. I will film all practice throws and at the end of the session we will review them and write notes on adjustments.

Coach John trains both my son and my daughter in multiple throwing events. He was accommodating and adjusted to each of my kids needs. He was constantly instructing, demonstrating, correcting, and encouraging them. Both kids enjoyed the session.

Coach John is an absolute wealth of knowledge. His attention to detail is remarkable. He slowly breaks down each throwing motion and simplifies them with perfect drills to ensure his athletes are using correct form. He is not only a great coach and teacher he is a true gentleman. Book this coach for your athlete and the results will astound you.

Coach John is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to the shot put. He had me throwing over a foot past my PB in shot in just our first lesson. He brings lots of real experience to the table that is commonly lacked by throwing coaches. Will definitely throw with him in the future.

Coach John is great help! After one session he got me out of my slump and threw about 2 1/2 foot season best going from 46-9 to 49-5! Great guy and Coach and I am happy to have found him to help me with my throws.

Mr. Viotto has helped turn around the throwing program at North Brunswick High School and has made us relevant in the shot put and discus again.
