Martial Arts
I have found Baguazhang to be the most effective of the martial arts I have trained in, and unlike many other martial arts your skills do not degrade as you get older View all coaching experience

More About Coach John
I began my martial arts journey at the age of 8, at the Detroit Judo Club where I earned a brown belt. In 1976 I continued my training with Vincent Adams (private instructor) and earned a 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. In 1998 I began teaching and training with Master Romeo Black at the Alliance of the Dragon Martial Arts School in Detroit, there I was introduced to Baguazhang. In 2003, in an effort to expand my Bagua knowledge I began training at Great Lakes Wushu in Ann Arbor, Mich under Richard Miller where I learned Yin Style Baguazhang Kung Fu (Lion System) which is what I teach. Bagua is an Internal style of Kung Fu which is in the same class as Tai Chi and Hsing I. Bagua was designed specifically to fight multiple opponents, it involves the ability to strike at any angle and the use of footwork to avoid and out maneuver the opponent. Power for every strike is generated in the waist and hips so you in effect strike with almost your whole body weight and not just your arm strength. I have trained hundreds of students several of which are black belts in other systems, several members of law enforcement and the Detroit chapter of the Guardian Angels, I have trained and conducted seminars, demonstrations at several churches, community centers, elementary and middle schools in the Detroit area. Bagua requires attention to detail, and as such those over the age of 18 can get the most out of this system, but students between 8 and 18 do very well if they are dedicated to learning. My oldest students were in their 60s. I offer private training and can come to your school, home, church, business in the Detroit area. Willing to submit to drug testing and police clearance.
Awarded Brown belt by the Detroit Judo Club, Black belt in Tae Kwon Do by Vincent Adams, Black belt in Chi house martial arts by Master Romeo Black, recognition by the Detroit City Council and several local churches. Baguazhang does not have a (traditional) ranking system.
The session will start with static (stationary) posture strength training for the set of strikes that will be taught that session (10 min). Circle walking, foot placement, direction change (20 min). Introduction to and function of each strike of that session (15 min). Static practice of strikes, stepping strike practice (forward, backward, left, right, up, down) (30 min). Application of strikes (30 min). Form training (a set of strikes done in order)(10 min)

The coach was knowledgeable and taught the material well.
Steven Baker/ Student instructor (Tae kwon do), Dexter Community Center (Testimonial)
John (Rhino) taught us how to maintain our balance while we strike on the move and not lose any power. He taught us how to WALK (and change direction) properly which is something I thought we knew how to do but was surprised to find out how wrong we were. He showed us how to use both hands at all times WITH full power. I want to John for introducing us to Baguazhang and its power.

Excellent instructor very knowledgeable in martial arts highly recommended for all levels
Donna Turner/ Mother, Wife, Lawyer (Testimonial)
I just wanted to use the Bagua strengthening postures and strikes to help with my health and fitness and did not intend to learn to fight. I am a 5'4", 125 pounds and 55 years old woman and the last thing, the LAST thing I thought was that I would at my age and size that I would have the power to fight AND win against any man. I learned how use my body weight and leverage to make up for my size and weight. Now I still do not want to ever get in a fight but if for some reason it happens I know that I have more options than I ever had before. Thank you Rhino!
Andrew Turner/ System Analyst, Personal Trainer, Writer (Testimonial)
I have over 30 years of martial arts training(Boxing, Judo, Krav Maga, Karate) and I want to thank Rhino(John) for introducing me to Baguazhang. I was very surprised to find out just how much Bagua added to the skills that I already had and made me a much more effective fighter. Bagua gave me many more options in a fight and taught me how to deliver more power with less energy, to use leverage over strength and that (soft beats hard and a circle beats a straight line) . He taught me how to pay more attention to my ENTIRE body position and structure at all times so strikes at ANY angle have the same power and I don't lose my balance. Thank you Rhino!
