More About Coach Johnathon
I am a 6-year NSCA certified strength and conditioning specialist (NSCA-CSCS) and tactical strength and conditioning facilitator (NSCA-TSACF.) I have been coaching Soldiers and college athletes for over 7 years. I hold a Master's degree in Sports Performance and a BS in Exercise Science fro Ball State University. I have coached athletes in nearly all Olympic sports as well as powerlifting, Olympic lifting, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.
I started my athletic adventure in middle school as a sprinter and pole vaulter. I competed in races ranging from 400m up to 1600m including 110m and 300m hurdles. I competed all-conference throughout high school and earned an athletic scholarship in pole vault. After high school I joined the Army and I competed in various types of Soldiering competitions much like the Ranger Challenge. After a 4-year 25W-1L career at military competitions I took a job in northern Virginia where I raced mountain bike downhill single track and double track as well as road time-trial for team Fuji for 2 seasons. After cycling I interned at Cooper Speed-Strength School in Tampa Florida where I worked with pro, college, and high school football, baseball, and lacrosse athletes. Returning to Indiana, I became a Strength and Conditioning coach for Ball State University Athletics for 3 years. After Grad School I opened my own strength and conditioning facility in Muncie, IN. The Arsenal still provides excellent training as a CrossFit Affiliate. I currently train athletes at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport.
I begin sessions with a 5-10 minute dynamic warmup followed by 5-10 minutes of movement-prep drills or prehab tailored to the session's particular goal (strength, agility, speed, injury prevention/rehab, etc....) The heart of the workout is very individualized but begins with our most powerful or neurologically taxing effort and progresses to lower intensity supporting and accessory strength work. This part of the session will generally determine the overall length of the session, from 60-90 minutes. Some training is very specific to the athlete's goals and require longer rest intervals between exercises or drills, or simply require longer progressions to achieve the desired skill learning goals for the session. although I hold my clients' time in high regard, I train my clients to meet standards rather than training time.
