Jason was a fantastic personal coach for the time that we spent training. He was always showing me ways to better my wrestling and higher my intensity. Because of him I made the accomplishments that I made in my wrestling career.
My name is Eric Chaffer and my son, Tim, is a student in the threestyle clinic. Tim is 11, soon to be 12. He started wrestling in a different clinic last year and wasn’t completely convinced that he wanted to continue when it was over. I was hoping a little more time and/or a change of scenery might help. I grew up in Long Beach and wrestled for a few years with coach Gillespie so I knew what I was getting there. He is a legend and I have complete faith in his coaching. I have heard of some of the other coaches but didn’t know too much about any of them other than the fact that most of them have pretty impressive resumes as far as their personal accomplishments. Having been in a similar industry as you are, I am quite aware that many people with impressive personal accomplishments don’t always make the best coaches. I am a cop now but before that, I coached and taught tennis for 15 years. I worked alongside many people who had that impressive resume but couldn’t teach worth a damn. I was a late bloomer as a player and still had a decent playing career but was a much better teacher of the game and kind of fell into a pretty good living teaching the sport that I loved. As an instructor who worked primarily with children (I hate adults), things clicked for me. I loved what I was doing and had an enthusiasm for teaching that not many others seemed to have. I started working clinics but that blossomed into more lucrative private lessons before long and I realized that I might be able to make a career out of this. I tell you all this (hopefully, you haven’t deleted this just yet) because I see a lot of similarities in you. I have watched you with the kids for a few weeks now and have to tell you that I am more than impressed at the job that you do. I asked Paul who you were just to try and put a face to one of the many names that I knew and when he told me who you were, I remembered reading your name somewhere but not on the brochure. Then I thought of the LIWA website and remembered reading about you and some of your posts and again, I was impressed. As a teacher/coach/instructor, I always appreciated when a parent expressed to me that they were pleased with my work or just simply happy that their child was having a good time. My wife and I vowed that when we had children, we would make sure to do the same. Well sir, I am telling you now that you have had a great influence on my son and I appreciate it more than you know. He is excited to come to practice, he is improving before my very eyes and more importantly, he is having a great time. As a parent, nothing makes me happier than to see one of my children happy and in my opinion, we owe a lot of the credit to you. The way you take charge of the class, your attention to each child, your enthusiasm and your knowledge. All of that make a great coach. I apologize for the length of this e-mail but I thought it important to let you know how I felt and to thank you for your hard work and your affect on my son. Keep up the good work and I wish you great success in what you do. You deserve it. Sincerely, Eric Chaffer
Since the summer of my Jr. year in high school I have been training with Jason constantly to improve my technique and my style of wrestling. I can honestly say that my way of wrestling has improved tremendously. My top game went from O.K. to great just in a few weeks and wrestling on my feet became more technically sound. I became a better wrestling by knowing the sport better, getting the mental and physical aspect of it, and constantly putting in work with Jay. Overall, Jason has helped guide me to all my success. Trust me, coming from a Division 1 wrestling starter, this man knows his stuff!!!
Jason Layton is the best top wrestler I’ve ever competed with, and I’ve had Jessie Jantzen on top of me. We were teammates at NCC in the 2001-2002 , and being on bottom against him was a frustrating experience. When I made the National finals that year and was going to wrestle Keri Stanley, another notorious crab-rider, everyone was warning me “just don’t end up on bottom.” I wasn’t worried, I’d been wrestling with Layton all year… I won Nationals. Layton is ridiculous on top, trust me. Ryan Maurer 2x NYS Champion 2002 Juco National Champion
I’m an adult who I started taking private lesson with Jason once or twice a week about two months ago to improve my wrestling for jiu jitsu competitions. In that short time, I feel that I’ve improved immensely, much more than I improved in any one high school wrestling season. Jason does an excellent job of demonstrating and showing new techniques, as well as correcting and tightening up existing techniques. In addition, he only teaches high-quality, high-percentage moves – not nonsense that’s going to get you in trouble against high-level competition. I come out of every private with new material to drill, and a game-plan to iron out the kinks in my existing game. I can’t recommend him enough.
