More About Coach Jalen
I have experience coaching and training youth basketball players at the elementary and middle school levels. I currently serve as an assistant basketball coach for the middle school team at Cassidy Plus School, where I work closely with student-athletes to develop their basketball fundamentals, teamwork, and overall understanding of the game. In addition to coaching, I have trained middle school boys and elementary school players through programs at PYB. I have also gained experience organizing and leading basketball clinics and tournaments through my nonprofit, Outside J, where I focus on creating opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills in a competitive and positive environment. My primary focus is helping young athletes build strong fundamentals, confidence, and a love for the game. The typical age range of players I work with is between 8–12 years old
I was nominated for the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program in 2023 and recognized as a Spectrum News Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2023 for my achievements in academics and athletics. Although I did not compete at the collegiate level, I have had the opportunity to train and practice at a collegiate level through sessions with the Temple Owls women's basketball program. Practicing in that environment allowed me to experience the pace, discipline, and preparation required to perform at the Division I level. These experiences helped strengthen my understanding of the game and continue to influence how I approach teaching basketball fundamentals and skill development.
In a typical training session, athletes can expect a strong focus on mastering the fundamentals of basketball before moving into more advanced skills. I believe that building a solid foundation is the most important part of player development, especially for younger athletes. Most sessions start with ball-handling drills designed to improve control, coordination, and confidence with the basketball. We will work on dribbling with both hands, change-of-direction moves, and protecting the ball under pressure.
From there, we focus on finishing around the basket, including proper footwork and learning how to consistently make open layups. As players progress, we also incorporate shooting fundamentals such as shooting form, balance, and repetition. A large part of my training philosophy is helping players develop guard skills, since being able to handle the ball, make decisions, and control the pace of the game is essential for playing at higher levels. Overall, my goal is to help athletes become more confident, fundamentally sound players who are comfortable with the ball in their hands.
