More About Coach Jake

I have been doing private lessons and team coaching (Vista Baseball Academy) for the past two and a half years and have vast amounts of personal playing and training experience. As a former professional pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization, I have had to the privilege to play alongside some of the best players in the game, as well as learn from some of the best trainers and coaches in the game. I have worked with youth athletes as young as 6 years old all the way up to men's league players in their 50s, and just about every age in between.

In 2014, I was a 2nd round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs (45th overall) and a Top 30 Prospect in the Cubs organization. Previously, in 2013 I had been drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates but chose not to sign a contract with them. In the years 2010-2014, I played Division 1 baseball for the University of Maryland, where I set the current single season strikeout record in 2014 and helped lead the team to its first ever Regional Championship. That year we fell one win shy of making it to the College World Series. In 2016, I was an All-Star in the Carolina League (High A for the Cubs). In 2017 I played in the Arizona Fall League where I was also an All-Star and competed against some of the best young players in the MLB, including Ronald Acuna Jr., Brandon Lowe, Austin Riley, Michael Chavis, Yordan Alvarez, Luis Urias, Jordan Hicks, etc. In 2019, I spent the year in Double A, where my pitching coach was 15-year MLB veteran pitcher, Ron Villone. I am currently friends and teammates with numerous MLB players and coaches.

The purpose of my first session with an athlete would be to identify his strengths and weaknesses as an athlete and as a player. I would also learn what type of foundation he has from a pitching aspect and a strength training aspect so that my pitching instruction could build off of that foundation as oppose to interfering with it. From a pitching perspective, I would need to know how many months out of the year he has been throwing and pitching, what his current baseball schedule was like, what his individual goals were (pitching velocity, command, strength, etc.) and what he was trying to prepare for (fall season, spring season, little league season, pony season, high school season, etc.) As a coach, my goal is to build off the athlete’s current strengths and help minimize any weaknesses he has. I try not to over-instruct, because I believe every athlete has his own unique style and movement patterns. Each lesson would build off of the previous lesson, compounding the work the athlete has put in toward his specific goal.

He knows what he is doing.. Shows patience for my boy who is starting out. Great set up with equipment to best improve your boy or girl.

Our 9yr old son had a great 1st practice and looks forward to training with Jake.

My son Bennett loved his time learning from Coach Jake and we fully intend to continue our sessions with him. Awesome experience and could not be happier with Coach Jake's coaching. Can't wait for next time!

My kid just finished his first session with Coach Jake. Jake was great. Patient and listened. My kid who is typically very quiet was talkative and responsive. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking to get their kids to hone in on fundamentals and increase their skills.

I was very impressed with our first session with Jake. He was able to connect with my son right away and I immediately saw improvement with my son's posture and attentiveness. He made such progress in just one session and I expect more success will follow. I'm absolutely moving forward with weekly sessions.

Great coach

Coach Jake did a great job assessing my son and getting him started on the right track as a player learning the position for the first time. The coaching he provided throughout the lesson was easy for my son to understand and apply. My son greatly enjoyed the lesson and we'll be working with Coach Jake again in the future.

By the end of my 8 yr old son’s 1st session with Coach Jake he was hitting and throwing with more power and accuracy. Coach Jake delivered clear instruction my son could understand with patience and positivity. It was very impressive to witness. My son loved the session and is looking forward to the next. Thanks Coach!

Jake was great with my son! In just an hour I could see drastic improvement in my son’s fundamental skills. Jake was patent with my son who is still young so loses focus easily. We will definitely be using Jake again!

Coach Jake did a great job! My 12 year old son really enjoyed the session. Looking forward to scheduling another session.

Coach Jake obviously knows what he's speaking about when it comes to baseball and coaching. My primary goal in finding a coach to mentor my Son Jason, both physically and mentally, was to demonstrate what it will take to get to the level that Matt is currently playing (AAA baseball in the Chicago Cubs Organization). I think that mental preparation is almost more critical than physical preparation at age 13. Jake went to the University of Maryland to play Division I baseball, which is impressive. All Dad's like to think that their sons can aspire to do this. On the other hand, I want to be realistic and just give my son the tools to become the very best baseball player he can be. Jake spent most of his time watching Jason and giving him pointers in batting and pitching (he has his own batting cage at his home in Vista, CA). I liked some of the new exercises and drills that Jake showed Jason how to do. All in all, my expectations were exceeded in this first coaching session.
We are looking forward to going forward with Coach Jake. Thank you, Dr. Carl Edwards 2020.10.06

Coach Jake is great. He is an amazing coach. My 9 year old son said he loved the lesson and cant wait to take more lessons.

Jake was great working with my son. He quickly assessed my son’s skill level and got to work on drills that strengthened where it was needed and made training fun.

My sons pitching improved during his first lesson. He is excited to keep working with Jake.
