I played high school basketball but honed my playing and coaching skills playing city league basketball in Los Angeles against D1 college & pro players. I hand-picked all of my teams and we played in leagues from Los Angeles to Orange County, winnning countless championships over a 7 year span. It was through these leagues I began to develop my coaching skills, particularly in-game adjustments and management. During the same time I launched my own youth basketball coaching clinics for 6th-12th grade as well as one-on-one coaching with high school students.
High School 9/80-5/83
Southern California City Leagues: 1/84-8/94
Northern California City Leagues: 1/95-4/11
Positions: PF, C, SF, SG, PG
My individual and/or group sessions start with a 10 minute stretching/warm up routine followed by the specific area(s) of the game that will be focused on. There is a brief on-court discussion of the specific drills for the day, with on-going instruction and discussion throughout the session. The following is a quick overview:
Warm Up: Slow jog, high knees, defensive slides
Stretch: 5-7 minutes
Drill Instruction: 5-10 minutes depending category
Drill Execution: 25-30 minutes
Suicides/Wolverines: Throughout the workout, timing depending on drills (i.e.: Free Throws, shooting close outs, etc.)
Wrap Up: 3-5 minutes

Signed up my 13 year old grandson with coach Ian. I saw immediate improvement in his presence on the court after just one session. He executed moves that coach Ian had shown him effortlessly, surprising himself. After 3 sessions, his ball handling technique was greatly improved. Looking forward to more sessions, and I have two more grandkids that are wanting to do the same. Thank you coach Ian

Coach Ian is great with my 9 year old. He’s patient and observes what skills need to be worked on. My son has nothing but positive things to say about him after training. I can already see a difference in the skills he’s been working on. Definitely recommend Coach Ian, especially to anyone who’s just starting out with basketball.
Brian (CoachUp client)
Excellent coaching style. He observed and made minor corrections as opposed to dramatic changes. There is a noticeable difference after one session.

I was very impressed by coach Ian's work ethic. He was very helpful and friendly with our son. He taught our son some of the offensive and defensive drills. Overall we're very happy with our choice.

Excellent coach. My 12 year old son was very nervous about the coaching. The sessions were a surprise gift for him and he wasn’t sure. But Coach Ian immediately connected and made him feel comfortable. The workout itself was fantastic. Assessing skills. Working on strengths and weaknesses. Giving him tips and advice. Discussing what they will work on going forward. Things to do for “homework”. What to expect going forward. Etc. he pushed my son to work hard but my son said it was fun and extremely helpful. He is very excited about continuing lessons and improving and learning and working with Coach Ian.
Robert (CoachUp client)
Coach Ian is very responsive to the areas of my son’s game he wants to work on. Since beginning our sessions with Coach Ian my son’s confidence and skill has improved to a huge degree. He went from never having played the game at all to scoring multiple times in league games, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with Coach Ian to improve his game.
Kristi (CoachUp client)
Coach Ian is a really wonderful coach - He assesses where the athlete is at and then creates a program to help improve in the areas that are needing further work. He also listens to the athlete to see what he wants to work on. Coach Ian is also very flexible in terms of scheduling or re-scheduling. Our child feels very supported and he's super excited to work with Coach Ian week in and week out! The investment has been totally worth it!!
