More About Coach Henry

I have over 20 years coaching athletes from youth level, high school, collegiate, Professional, and Masters Level. I coached at Lindbergh High School from 1992 - 2012, also coached the summer of 1994 - 1996 Salem Track Club and in 1996 Volunteer Coach at Willamette University, while training and competing for Club Ballard International. Currently coaching at Tahoma High School from 2012 to present, and USATF Tahoma Track Club (TTC) present. Also a member of the Washington State Coaching Association. I coach Sprints, Jumps, Hurdles, and Middle Distance. I have also done private coaching for High School Athletes in Jumps and Hurdles, and have had 5 state champions with 3 in jumps and 2 in hurdles. I have also had many top 10 state placers in Jumps and Hurdlers over the past 20 years. I had 8 athletes that placed in the top 8 in LJ, TJ, Hurdles, and Pentathlon at Junior Nationals from age 13 - 18 with 13-14 age group Pentathlon taking 2nd overall just last year (2016).

I won the Arco Jesse Owens Games when I was 10 years old jumping 17'1 in the long jump, I was High School State Champion in the Long Jump 24'2, and Triple Jump 49'11.75" which at the time made me 2nd all time best in Washington State History, also took 2nd in 110HH with a time of 14.1 but ran a 13.8 in prelims. I am still Ranked in the top 10 All Time in Washington State History in LJ, TJ, and 110HH.

I Competed for a Junior College and ran Professional Level for Club Ballard International. While competing for Club Ballard International, I competed in the Prefontaine Classic invite in the LJ, and the 4x100 relay, LJ, TJ, and 110HH at the Harry Jerome Meet in Canada, where my team almost beat Nike International in the 4x100m relay. I ran the 3rd leg of the relay. I have PR in 110HH of 13.4 in 1996 and LJ 26'10 and TJ 54'2, but never got to compete with good coaching and never reached my potential even when having many schools looking at me for football and track, but not making the choice to compete at those levels. My goal is to give back what I have learned over the years, and help young athletes push themselves to be the best they can be. I also plan to compete in Masters soon as I continue to train while I coach.

With Jumps, a client learn jumping techniques, tempo on runway, approach speed, and body position through the jump and landing, and strength and conditioning. With Hurdles, a client will learn flexibility, technique, speed over and through hurdles, and body position, strength and conditioning. With hurdles, sprints, and jumps I also teach the mental part of competing and performing in pressure situations

Client Reviews

Henry is very knowledgeable. He had an awesome session with my daughter. She got in the car so excited because she learned so much in just an hour. I highly recommend him!!

Coach Henry is a truly outstanding and multi-talented coach. My daughter is training for the heptathlon, and Coach Henry can coach it all. He literally had my daughter jump a PR in the high jump after just a single session. Thoughtful, insightful, and yet fun at the same time, my daughter looks forward to every session. The improvement is striking, and we are still going strong. Highly recommended!

Coach Henry is a wonderful coach. He helped my son reach his goal for long jump. Now he is encouraging him to go beyond it. He is an excellent coach. He takes his time and does everything thoroughly that needs to be done to help his athletes excel. Kids enjoy their sessions with him. He is also very encouraging and works on the mental approach of the athlete. Simply stated my son is a much better athlete after training with Coach Henry!

I am beyond blessed to have had Coach Brown as my coach these past 4yrs. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have been taught and coached by him. He is such a positive and encouraging person. Brown knows how to make practice efficient and super fun. I'll always remember how he made each person dance before we could start out 6AM Saturday practice. He is a coach who continues to believe in you even when you don't believe in yourself. He has not only helped to improve in my athletic performances drastically, but also has helped me to become a more confident individual. Coach Brown is the definition of the perfect coach. He is knowledgeable, patient, uplifting, fun, and admirable. Thank you Coach Brown for making me the track athlete I am today:)
I knew of Henry Brown before I had the chance to meet him. When I started coaching track at Lindbergh High School in 2000 I would walk past the school record board every day. Henry Brown’s name always stood out: 110 Hurdles 13.8, Long Jump 24’ 0”, Triple Jump 49’ 11 1.25”. A couple of years later I had the opportunity to get to know Henry when he joined our coaching staff. While I knew he was a great athlete and that he was knowledgeable about track and field, I wasn’t sure if he could coach—sometimes that best athletes are not the best coaches. But I watched him interact effectively with the kids on the team and develop strong relationships with them. I saw him clearly communicating proper technique and strategy. He created workout plans and organized practices around technique drills. He was great working with our top athletes—the kids who were competitive at the state level. But I was pleasantly surprised and impressed that he put just as much effort into coaching the first year kids who had very little athletic ability as he did with the stars. I also remember how at meets Henry was quick to help out kids on the other teams, and to invest in them as well as our own athletes. Henry Brown is a great coach for all the right reasons: he cares about people; he loves the sport; he is a wealth of knowledge and experience; he keeps things fun. I enjoyed coaching with him for the years he was on our staff, and I recommend him to anyone who has the opportunity to benefit from his coaching.
I have been a sprinter for many years. I set the 9th fastest time in WA state history in the 300 meter hurdles as well as the school record in both hurdle events in High School. I went on to run for the University of Washington where I have the #3 fastest time in school history in the 400 meter hurdles. It has been 13 years since I graduated college and I now coach High School Track along side Coach Brown. After 13 years I decided to get back into competition in the USA Track and Field Masters division. I will be competing in the USATF championships this summer, going into the meet seeded #1 in the World in the 110 meter hurdles in the 35-39 age group. Coach Brown has been my personal coach and trainer since I made the decision to start competing again. I am truly thankful for his coaching. While I had great coaching in College, I can honestly say Coach Brown has done more to help me succeed. He notices the "little things" that make a "big difference". He invests himself in his athletes, and thanks to him, I am a better coach for my athletes.
My 15 year old daughter has now been working with Coach Brown for a little over a year, both in club track and high school track. We first met him in 2016 when we joined Tahoma Track Club. My daughter is a multi-events athlete and was training to compete in both individual events and the pentathlon. Coach Brown couldn't have been more supportive of her goals. With his help she earned 2nd in the pentathlon at USATF Junior Olympics. She had been struggling in high jump and and long jump but in very little time he helped her PR at Regionals and Nationals. She trusts him and his positive spirit is contagious. She is a now a freshman in high school and and just qualified for State in 2 events, 100m hurdles and LJ. The training is on point as she is peaking at the right time. As a parent, I feel blessed to have Coach Brown in my daughter's life. Not only is he skilled at the technical aspects of track, but he is able to be emotionally supportive as well. He respects her as a person, student and as an athlete. He is able to find the unique and individual way to connect and motivate each athlete. He is also very skilled at helping me help her. Long and short of it, he's a great person, coach and friend.
What can I say about Coach Brown? I’ve only worked with him for about a year now, but it feels like it’s been a lot longer with all of the lessons he’s taught me. One thing he has ingrained in me is to always be competing (or as he says, ABC). He stresses that at every meet, all we need to worry about is competing, and the times and distances will come. Coach Brown coaches me in hurdles, high jump, and long jump. We’ll hopefully be adding triple jump to that list soon. He always gives me something specific to focus on in each event so I can compete to the best of my ability.     Although we do have many things to work on at practices, Coach Brown always makes it fun. He has enough energy to keep all of us on our toes at practice, which is especially helpful after a long day at school. He has many drills that not only help us improve at our events, but are also really fun. Since I started working with him, my 100 meter hurdle time has dropped by about a second, I’ve improved my long jump by around 2 feet, and I’ve raised my high jump PR by 4 inches. He also let me run 300 meter hurdles when I expressed an interest.     I have really enjoyed working with Coach Brown over the last year. He not only encourages me to be the best athlete I can be, but also the best person I can be. He cares about my health just as much as he cares about my athletic improvement, so he never pushes me too far on an injury. I trust him completely as a coach and person.     Coach Brown always takes what I want for my future as an athlete and as a student into consideration. I want to focus on the heptathlon, and he supports me completely in this. He also pushes me to be a well rounded athlete, which is why we want to pursue triple jump in addition to my other events.     Simply put, Coach Brown is a very knowledgeable and supportive coach who will push you to be the best you can be in every aspect of your life.
Finish through the line!” a phrase Coach Brown frequently shouted at me. It is difficult to put into words the type of coach Henry Brown is. He is assertive, demanding, and relentless; but at the same time, he is patient, encouraging, and inspiring. Coach Brown was my biggest critic, but at the same time my biggest fan. He pushed me pass my mental and physical capacity, and continued to push and remind me that if I truly wanted to succeed in track and field, I would have to put in more work than the people to my right and left at the starting line. Every win and every loss, he treated you the same, kept you grounded, humble, and hungry for more; I didn’t know it then, but Coach Brown was preparing me for more than what track could ever offer. The impact of his coaching methods cannot be quantified by the numbers on the time clock or the distance on the leaderboard – but is instead measured in my success off the track. Coach Brown was not only there for me when I was running laps, he was also preparing me for the rough patches that come with life – and it took a long time for me to comprehend this. Every extra push-up, crunch, and lap he demanded, built up my strength to go beyond what was asked. A skill that transitioned well into my academic and professional careers, prior to having Coach Brown in my life I wasn’t sure if it was my place to succeed; but, because of him I am a soon to be graduate of the University of Washington seeking to pursue my Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Bioengineering. I don’t think Coach Brown will ever be able to understand what he has done for me, in track and in life. He instilled the mentality in me that boundaries are only lines; and all I had to do was finish through the line.
The three keys to success in any sport are good instruction, practice/repetition, and trust in ones skills. With that being said, it is crucial that athletes get the best instruction! Coach Henry Brown will give you just that. Coach Brown is not only a great athlete but also a student of the sport. He has countless years of experience and continues to instill his athletic knowledge in thousands of young athletes. With Coach Brown, you know you are getting world class coaching in every aspect including; sprinting, hurdling, vertical and horizontal jumps, plyometric and sport-specific strength training. Coach Brown has been successful at all ages and all skills levels and has the ability to coach beginners and professionals alike. When you work with Coach Brown you are guaranteed a family-oriented, caring coach who will give everything in order to help his athletes remain healthy and succeed.
The first two years of high school track were filled with uncertainty running for distance. If Coach Brown hadn’t seen the potential sprinter I was destined to become, I would have been stuck running the mile every track meet and getting an average time. He had such a great perception and attention to detail when it came to his sprinters. He broke running down into steps and showed us how to run each race. Coach Brown pushed us with every practice and made sure we were giving our all. He never settled for less because he knew we could always push ourselves just a little bit more. There was never a time I felt I couldn’t approach him and ask for guidance. The one thing I will never forget about Coach Brown was the way he always stopped and listened to you. My 4x100 meter relay team made 4th at state my senior year of high school because of Coach Brown’s discipline and encouragement that made us work so hard and give us the confidence we needed. It is rare to find someone who genuinely wants you to succeed and teach you in a way that is inspiring.
Henry Brown has affected my life in such a positive way. When I was going into high school track I told myself I was never running more than 200m. Coach brown told me immediately that I was going to do the 300m hurdles and I just laughed at the thought. After working with me in my events I could feel myself getting better, which of course makes you love your event even more. Coach brown wouldn’t let me slack off on anything, and if I did he would have me repeat the workout until I got it right. That was something that I hated in the moment, but I value today. I always remember Coach Brown going out of his way to make sure that I was working and performing to my full potential. When we would do our hurdle drills as team Coach Brown challenge us each day. He would time us through the drills to see who could do them the fastest with the correct form, which would get us in the racing mindset and would challenge us to push ourselves to go faster each time. Henry Brown is one of the people in my life that pushed me to run track in college, which I was fortunate enough to do. For the last 5 years I have ran sprints and hurdles at Central Washington University and worked hard enough to get myself on the schools record board for 4 events. The 100h,400h, 200m and 4x1 relay where I old a school record. Coach Browns coaching and encouragement has stuck with me till this day, 5 years later, and I can guarantee it always will. It’s always a blessing to come across a person in your life who wants nothing more than to help you succeed and accomplish your dreams. Coach brown was like this with all his athletes. He would always go above and beyond, anyone could see it. He shares his passion and love for the sport each day. Brown believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself, and if I could I would thank him every day. I wouldn’t be where I am now without him.
I highly recommend Coach Henry Brown to any athlete competing in the sport of Track&Field! Coach Brown has over 20 years coaching experience with all age levels. Coach Brown has expert knowledge in several event groups: Long, Triple, and High Jump 110 High Hurdles, 300 IM Hurdles Sprints, Relays He has coached 5 Washington State Jump Champions and 2 Washington State Hurdle Champions. He has also coached several State Meet finalists. In addition to experience and expertise, Coach Brown has a unique coaching style. He is able to communicate and connect with the student-athlete in a way that allows learning and improvement to flourish. He has genuine concern for the athlete and fully prepares them for the next competition as well as long term growth. I have personally known Henry for 6 years. He has coached 2 of my children and have helped them tremendously. Sincerely, John Ribera, parent and former track coach
