More About Coach Hap

I played baseball at the University of Notre Dame where I coached for 1 year. I have also coached 11-16 year old boys in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and most recently coached boys 11-13 in Cincinnati, Ohio in the Southwest Ohio League. I am currently working with my 14 year old son on hitting, fielding, proper throwing mechanics and situational baseball.

I attended baseball powerhouse Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was a four year starter and played on the 1987 State Championship team. I was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 1989 Major League Baseball Draft but chose to attended college.

I focus my coaching on hitting and infield and outfield instruction. The first thing I would recommend to my client is to be fully loose before engaging in a lesson with me. I have come across too many players that attend training sessions during their regular baseball seasons and have injured themselves because of over work or not stretching properly prior to that session. I would ask the client questions such as "have they had any previous injuries, are they nursing an injury, did they recently pitch in a game and their arm hurts." I would also ask the client and his parents what they are looking to get out of the training session. This information will allow me to tailor a training session that will be impactful to the client. For example, if the client and parents want to see an improvement in hitting, I would first breakdown the client's batting stance to make sure they are balanced, they are holding the bat the right way in their hands and have plate coverage. Next, I would ask them to take some swings off of a tee so I may observe their loading mechanism, their bat angle through the zone, their extension, follow through and to see if they are a front foot hitter. This will give me a better idea of what areas I need to focus on with the client. There are many ways to teach hitting so I would ask the client to provide me with feedback on what feels comfortable. I would reassure my client that improvements are not going to take place over night but the smallest tweak here or there could produce positive results. If my client wanted to improve his defense i.e. fielding ground balls, I would start by hitting my client ground balls to assess his fielding skills. Based on what I observe, I could work with my client on his approach as the ball enters the hitting zone, (is he flat footed or moving?) work with my client on sprinting to the ball and breaking down, making sure he is low to the ground, glove out in front. I would next work with my client on moving through the ball after he fields it so his momentum is moving towards the base he is throwing to. Depending on the age of my client, I would work with them on the proper way to round a ground ball.

Client Reviews

We had a great session with Coach Hap. His enthusiasm for the game of baseball is infectious. His teaching methods are very practical and effective. My son enjoyed his coaching style and saw quick results when he put the techniques into practice. We will definitely be booking more sessions and would recommend Coach Hap.

Coach Hap is a very good coach. I highly recommend him to everyone who is looking for sucess in playing baseball. My son who is 15 years old, started at 3 years old with t-ball and has made his way to his 2nd year of High School Baseball. He after one session, begged for us to please let him continue thru out the rest of his high school baseball seasons with Coach Hap. My son left the feild and had so much confindence and positivity. Coach Hap made a huge impact on him. Which says a whole lot considering my son was second guessing his self on even playing baseball anymore after having a struggling / discouraging season with his high school team and coach. Also after leaving the feild my son couldn't wait to get home and to continue to practice on the great things Coach Hap introduced him too. He talked about how Coach Hap really guided him. He was comfortable and very pleased with the coaching and guidance given. Coach Hap, is absolutley amazing. Actually, we are going to keep Coach Hap in the family and continue with Coach for our youngest son in the next years to come.

Really enjoyed our first session with Coach Hap. In a limited amount of time, he identified several fundamental issues with my 12-year old son's swing. He did a nice job of explaining the issues in a relatable way and gave him drills/thoughts to work on to correct those issues. Having not met Coach Hap prior to this lesson, I was most impressed by the fact that he appeared to be very caring and demonstrated a real desire to see my child improve.

Coach Hap is an outstanding coach! He is extremely knowledgable, and our 12 year old son enjoys his lessons. He was able to tweak a few things in our son's stance in hitting that enabled him to change his game. He was also able to find some small mannerisms that our son was doing when releasing the ball which was creating inconsistency in throwing. These two small things have made a big difference. If your child is looking to have someone evaluate their skill and make the changes for the next level, Hap is the coach to do it.

Coach Hap was fantastic!! He was friendly and easy to work with, and truly improved our son’s game after just a session. He noticed big and little things right away to improve on. We will continue to use Coach Hap and would highly recommend:)

My son and I were very impressed with Hap's training. Hap is an extraordinary teacher of baseball. My son felt like he received more information and guidance in one hour than he gets in an entire season of baseball with his school team.

Coach Hap gave very helpful, direct instruction to our high school son. He offered positive critiques to help him make adjustments to his swing while also offering drills he can work on at home. Our son came out feeling confident with a strong sense of the areas he can work on to improve. I was unable to attend the session. When I asked Danny about how it went, he replied with, "He really knew his stuff!" That's quite a compliment from a 15 year old. Thanks Coach!

Coach Hap offers a nice balance of constructive criticism and praise, emphasizing aspects of my son's game that need to be encouraged while at the same time offering up refinements to improve it. He was particularly adept at pointing out and correcting subtle mechanical flaws in my son's glove handling and he looks forward to using this advice in future competition. All in all a great session from a knowledgeable and courteous coach. Will look to use again
