More About Coach Garry
I have been a track & field coach for over 14 years and hold several relevant certifications. I am a USA Track & Field Level I Certified Coach as well as a USTFCCCA—TFCA Technical Certified coach. In addition to these certifications, I have a NCAA/NACADA—Academic Success and Student-Athlete Certification and the NAIA Champions of Character Course Certification.
I pride myself in working with athletes one-on-one, in team settings, and providing counseling when needed. I am also an academic advisor specializing with working with student athletes from the middle school level through college and beyond. I also work with "at-risk" youth, first-generation, and international athletes focusing in the areas of track, football, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, general athletics, academics, life-skills, study skills, and compliance to the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA policies and regulation as necessary.
I have an abundance of athletic experience! I played football, soccer, basketball, and track & field during my time at St. Ignatius High School (Cleveland, OH) Following high school, I played and participated in football, basketball, and rugby at Kent State University. After transferring and attending the University of Oregon and St. Cloud State, I focused on football, Track & Field, and several other sports. I finished my collegiate career at Abilene Christian University, where I participated in Track & Field prior to beginning a collegiate coaching career. During my time at Abilene Christiain University I coached several conference and national champions as well as an Olympian! Additionally, I have coached at the middle school and high school levels, sharing from my extensive athletic playing and coaching experiences!
My typical training philosophy is to take an athlete from where they are and escalate them to beyond where they think they can be! I like to initially evaluate the athlete by getting a sense of where they are mentally with their sport, goals, and self. If available, I like to hear what their PR in any event is and what their next goal may be. Seeing how the athlete moves, accelerates, decreases speed or movement is then evaluated in order to move forward with conditioning and training them across a specified period of time in order to assist them achieving, and even going beyond, their goals!!! I am available for my athletes at any time to discuss training and/or mental challenges that arise to help them overcome those barriers to success!
