More About Coach Winston
Collegiate head coach, national champ, 2x Coach of the Year. High-level trainer for all athletes, combining patience with a results-driven approach.
Collegiate and overseas pro basketball player with diverse experience on and off the court. Playing strengths included high level skill set, footwork, defense and athleticism.
A typical basketball training session would include:
1. Warm-Up (15 minutes):
- Dynamic stretches (leg swings, lunges, high knees)
- Light jogging or agility ladder drills
- Ball-handling drills (dribbling around cones)
2. Skill Development (30 minutes):
- Shooting Drills: Spot shooting, catch-and-shoot, off-the-dribble shots, shooting from different spots on the court
- Ball Handling: Advanced dribbling drills (crossover, behind-the-back, between-the-legs), speed dribbling, and change-of-direction moves
- Passing: Partner passing (chest, bounce, overhead), passing against a wall, incorporating movement
3. Offensive Techniques (20 minutes):
- Movement without the Ball: Cutting, screening, and spacing drills
- Isolation Plays: Working on creating space and scoring against defenders
- Pick-and-Roll: Execution and defense against the pick-and-roll
4. Defensive Skills (20 minutes):
- Footwork: Defensive slides, closing out, and positioning
- One-on-One Defense: On-ball defense, contesting shots, and recovering
- Team Defense: Rotations, help defense, and communication
5. Conditioning (10 minutes):
- High-intensity interval sprints
- Endurance drills (suicides, shuttle runs)
- Agility drills (cone drills, quick footwork exercises)
6. Cool Down (5 minutes):
- Static stretching (focusing on major muscle groups)
- Light jogging or walking to lower heart rate
Throughout the session I’d emphasize technique, precision, and adapting to in-game scenarios.
