More About Coach Derrick

For the past 30 years, I have coached Track and Field at Bellarmine College Preparatory, an elite Jesuit high school in San Jose. Bellarmine has a long history of excellence not only in academics, but also in athletics. I have been proud to have coach a State Championship in 1991, 12 section titles, and 12 league championships in my time coaching. Working over the years, I not only worked with young men at Bellarmine, I have also coached individual athletes ranging from 7th grade to collegiate. I also run a personal training service for strength and conditioning, again ranging from 7th grade up to adults.

As a young athlete in high school, I imagined that I would pursue athletics, particularly football in college, however a career ending injury prevented me form pursuing that dream. In high school at Menlo Atherton High, I am proud to have lettered in three different sports: Football, Basketball, and Track and Field. During my sophomore year, I competed in the CCS finals and finished 8th place with a 43 foot jump. Football, I played all four years always a starter. Basketball, I was six man off the bench. After dealing with the devastation of my injury, I realized that I could still be involved in the sports I love by coaching.

Balancing different strengthening and conditioning activities with practicing skills while continuing to push to improve is important to all athletes. Here is a sample lesson plan for a week to balance these workouts:
1) 2days a week weight room training for strength and conditioning (I would include what specifics it would be on each day)
2)1 day of plyo or skill practice- lunges, box jumps, explosive jumps or two legged hops, and alternating bounds.
3) 1 day of running / cardio- 60, 80, 120, 150 x 4 sprints.

Client Reviews

Coach Bell was great working with my son. He went over the basics of Track & Field along with weight training and the basics of running and jumping. My son had a big smile at the end of the session and was thoroughly pushed to explore his athleticism. He looks forward to continue training for the upcoming season.

My son had a great first session with coach Derrick. I believe the guidance he will provide to my son with his experience will be a great boost to my kid.Looking forward to continue training with coach Derrick.
